This study proposes an islanding detection method for use of grid-connected inverter of renewable generation system. The proposed method is based on an index: the change of power factor (COPF). When an inverter is grid-connected, the COPF is lower than the threshold values. In contrast, as an islanding occurs, the COPF becomes much higher than the threshold value. Detection systems monitor the terminal voltage and load current at the grid-connected point to calculate COPF, and issue an operating signal when the value of COPF exceeds a given threshold. In this study, experiments are conducted to illustrate the principles of the proposed technique for a prototype grid-connected inverter. The test results show that the proposed method is reliable, economical, and easy to implement for islanding detection of grid-connected inverter.

This study proposes an active islanding detection method for use of grid-connected inverter of renewable energy generation system (REGS). With a digital signal processor (DSP) integrated, the proposed method is capable of detecting the islanding fault of grid-connected inverters of REGS during the variable load conditions. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the method was tested on a practical inverter of REGS, the field practical operations of the proposed method were studied in accordance with the conditions for the different loads and fault types. Test results are presented which show that the new proposed method is reliable, economical and easy for implementation.

In the area of renewable energy technologies, islanding of distributed generation system needs to be prevented due to safety reasons and to ensure quality of power supplied to the customers. Several islanding detection methods based on passive and active schemes have been proposed in the literature. Passive methods have a large non detection zone (NDZ), While active schemes degrade power quality. This paper proposed a new passive islanding detection method which combines the Wavelet-transform and neural network techniques. This method can reduce the NDZ to zero without any perturbation that deteriorates the power quality. The simulation results show that the proposed islanding detection method is effective and robust in all kind of conditions.

The inverter with critical loads should be able to provide critical loads with a stable and seamless voltage during control mode change as well as clearing time. The indirect current control has been proposed for providing stable voltage with critical load during clearing time and seamless control mode transfer of inverters. However, the islanding detection is difficult since with the indirect current control the magnitude and frequency of voltage do not change when the islanding occurs. The conventional anti-islanding method based on the magnitude and frequency of voltage variation cannot apply to the indirect current control. This paper proposes an islanding detection method for the indirect current control. The proposed islanding detection method can detect the islanding using reactive power perturbation and observation when the frequency and magnitude of voltage don’t vary during clearing time. In order to verify the proposed anti-islanding method, the experimental results of a 600W three-phase inverter are provided.
