The interest toward the application of fuel cells is increasing in the last years mainly due to the possibility of highly efficient decentralized clean energy generation. The output voltage of fuel-cell stacks is generally below 50 V. Consequently, low-power applications with high output voltage require a high gain for proper operation. A zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) dc–dc converter with high voltage gain is proposed for fuel cell as a front-end converter. It consists of a ZVS boost converter stage and a ZVS half-bridge converter stage and two stages are merged into a single stage. The ZVS boost converter stage provides a continuous input current and ZVS operation of the power switches. The ZVS half-bridge converter stage provides a high voltage gain. The principle of operation and system analysis are presented. Theoretical analysis and simulation result of the proposed converter were verified.

This work presents a power-electronics based system for renewable energy applications, the system is driven with an only one switch quadratic type boost converter, the discussed converter is based on a stack of switching stages which provide a large voltage gain, a desirable feature for fuel cell generation systems, the converters gain function is the quadratic boost-type converters; furthermore, the topology can be extended. The major benefit of the topology is that there is not a capacitor that sustains the entire output voltage, in contrast to other similar topologies in which there is a capacitor rated to the output port voltage, there is no high voltage capacitor in this system. Experimental verification is presented to confirm the system principles; experiments included a fuel cell emulator that was built and used for the experiments.

In this paper, a new transformerless high voltage gain dc-dc converter is proposed for low and medium power application. The proposed converter has high quadratic gain and utilizes only two inductors to achieve this gain. It has two switches that are operated simultaneously, making control of the converter easy. The proposed converter’s output voltage gain is higher than the conventional quadratic boost converter and other recently proposed high gain quadratic converters. A voltage multiplier circuit (VMC) is integrated with the proposed converter, which significantly increases the converter’s output voltage. Apart from a high output voltage, the proposed converter has low voltage stress across switches and capacitors, which is a major advantage of the proposed topology. A hardware prototype of 200 W of the proposed converter is developed in the laboratory to validate the converter’s performance. The efficiency of the converter is obtained through PLECS software by incorporating the switching and conduction losses.

The increase in global energy demand has led to increased research in harvesting solar energy. Solar energy is widely used in homes, electric vehicles and is a great solution to power remote areas. DC–DC converters are essential in extracting power from solar panels. One of the main problems in designing converters for solar energy applications is boosting the low output voltage of the solar panel to meaningful levels. While there are several topologies to achieve high gain, some of the problems faced by them are the extreme duty ratio, complex design and discontinuous input current. This paper presents a novel topology that uses an interleaved input, a voltage lift capacitor and a hybrid switched capacitor network to achieve high gain without an extreme duty ratio or bulky magnetics. The proposed converter is controlled using a microcontroller which regulates the output voltage. The voltage lift capacitor and the switched capacitor network enhances the voltage gain over a conventional boost converter without an extreme duty ratio. The analysis and design of the proposed converter are presented and verified with a 100 W prototype. The results show that the converter provides a gain of 10, at a duty ratio of 30%, while delivering the designed output power with considerably high efficiency.

Abstract Interleaved boost converters (IBCs) are cascaded in parallel in most of the applications. This novel approach connects IBC in series cascade. The IBC has an optimal operating duty cycle of 0.5. Normally, photovoltaic source voltage is low because of space constraints. In order to boost the source voltage, a conventional boost converter is replaced with series-cascaded IBC in this paper. The single-stage IBC also boosts the voltage to twice the input voltage. In the proposed converter, output voltage is about four times the input voltage with the same 0.5 duty cycle. A mathematical model is developed and simulated for the proposed work in MATLAB/Simulink platform. The output of the proposed circuit is analysed through fast Fourier transform to know the harmonic content due to the switching. The system is tested for stability with signal-flow graph modelling. The proposed work is realised using hardware and tested to validate the model.

This paper presents a boost DC-DC converter topology with non - isolated high gain and output midpoint, to boost the voltage obtained from solar photovoltaic panels. The three-level boost converter is coupled to the output port of the single-switch quadratic boost converter to derive the proposed converter topology. The voltage gain of the proposed converter is greater than that of the classical boost converter. The voltage stress on the switches of the proposed converter is equal to half of the converter output voltage. Static analysis, operating modes, experimental waveforms in continuous current conduction and discontinuous current conduction modes are shown. A 520 W prototype converter was implemented in the laboratory and its results are presented.

<p>In the last few years, the non-isolated dc converters involving high voltage gain with adequate performance are becoming quite popular in industrial applications. This is resulting in high voltage and current stress on the power device (switches and diodes), as well as a limited output voltage with a high duty cycle. This paper proposes a multi-phase non-isolated boost converter that uses capacitor clamping to increase output voltage while reducing stress across the power device. There are two stages in the proposed converter (first stage is three inductors and three switches and the second stage is clamper circuit of three capacitors and three diodes). The proposed converter is high voltage gain, with low voltage stress through switches transistors. To justify the theoretical analysis, the concept was validated through mathematical analysis and by simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The results carried out the results permit the converter behavior and performance to be accurately.</p>

Abstract This paper presents the high gain step-up BOOST converter which is essential to step up the low output voltage from PV panel to the high voltage according to the requirement of the application. In this paper a high gain BOOST converter with coupled inductor technique is proposed with the MPPT control. Without extreme duty ratios and the numerous turns-ratios of a coupled inductor this converter achieves a high step-up voltage-conversion ratio and the leakage energy of the coupled inductor is efficiently recycled to the load. MPPT control used to extract the maximum power from PV panel by controlling the Duty ratio of the converter. The PV panel, BOOST converter and the MPPT are modeled using Sim Power System blocks in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The prototype model of the proposed converter has been implemented with the maximum measured efficiency is up to 95.4% and full-load efficiency is 93.1%.
