Synthesis of non-uniform circular antenna arrays using a hybrid invasive weed optimization is introduced in this paper. The excitation weights and positions of array elements are optimized to reduce the peak side lobe level (PSLL) of the radiation pattern. The method proposed in this paper can effectively constrain the number of the array elements, size of the array, and the angular spacing of the adjacent element simultaneously. The radiation pattern has the constraint of a fixed major lobe beamwidth. Synthesis results of three different circular antenna arrays are given. The results show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed synthesis method in non-uniform circular antenna arrays.

A novel invasive weed optimization (IWO) variant called chaotic adaptive invasive weed optimization (CAIWO) is proposed and applied for the optimization of nonuniform circular antenna arrays. A chaotic search method has been combined into the modified IWO with adaptive dispersion, where the seeds produced by a weed are dispersed in the search space with standard deviation specified by the fitness value of the weed. To evaluate the performance of CAIWO, several representative benchmark functions are minimized using various optimization algorithms. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach improves the performance of the algorithm significantly, in terms of both the convergence speed and exploration ability. Moreover, the scheme of CAIWO is employed to find out an optimal set of weights and antenna element separation to obtain a radiation pattern with maximum side-lobe level (SLL) reduction with different numbers of antenna element under two cases with different purposes. The design results obtained by CAIWO have comfortably outperformed the published results obtained by other state-of-the-art metaheuristics in a statistically meaningful way.

Nowadays, low-side lobe antenna arrays are used in many communications systems such as satellite, cellular, radar and wireless communications. The antenna array with low side lobe rates should be designed to avoid noisy contact. A new stochastic approach to synthesize a linear antenna array to suppress normal distributed invasive weed optimization (NDIWO) is proposed in this paper synthesize a linear antenna array to suppress the side lobe levels. NDIWO is applied for optimization of the positions of the antenna elements. A 28-element linear array is designed and synthesized by using the proposed and other popular evolutionary algorithms. The acquired radiation designs are gathered with the calculations like particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE). The numerical results illustrate that the NDIWO optimized antenna array performs superior over PSO and DE optimized arrays in terms of low PSLL and convergence properties.

In this study, we present the implementation of invasive weed optimization (IWO) in the maximization of main-lobe to side-lobe level for the non-uniform planar antenna array. The antenna arrays investigated in this study are generated using the chaos game algorithm (CGA) and shaped into selected fractal geometries chosen on the basis of their interesting performance. This CGA is picked out in order to overcome the limitations found in the fractal arrays. All the attained results are compared with the results produced by a well-known optimization algorithm that is the particle swarm optimization (PSO). In all the optimized arrays, IWO shows superior optimization results compared with PSO.

AbstractPattern synthesis of non-uniform elliptical antenna arrays is presented in this paper. Only the element positions of the antenna arrays are optimized by the combination of differential evolution (DE) and invasive weed optimization (IWO) to reduce the peak side lobe level (PSLL) of the radiation pattern. In order to avoid the overlap of the array elements, the minimum spacing of the adjacent elements is constrained. Also, the beam width of the radiation pattern can be constrained effectively. Three elliptical antenna arrays that have 8, 12, and 20 elements are investigated. The synthesis results show that the introduced method can present a good side lobe reduction for the radiation pattern. Compared with other optimization methods, the method proposed in this paper can obtain better performance.

Abstract By virtue of the excellent aerodynamic performances, conformal phased arrays have been attracting considerable attention. However, for the synthesis of patterns with low/ultra-low sidelobes of the conventional conformal arrays, the obtained dynamic range ratios of amplitude excitations could be quite high, which results in stringent requirements on various error tolerances for practical implementation. Time-modulated array (TMA) has the advantages of low sidelobe and reduced dynamic range ratio requirement of amplitude excitations. This paper takes full advantages of conformal antenna arrays and time-modulated arrays. The active-element-pattern, including element mutual coupling and platform effects, is employed in the whole design process. To optimize the pulse durations and the switch-on instants of the time-modulated elements, multiobjective invasive weed optimization (MOIWO) algorithm based on the nondominated sorting of the solutions is proposed. A S-band 8-element cylindrical conformal array is designed and a S-band 16-element cylindrical-parabolic conformal array is constructed and tested at two different steering angles.

This study presents a novel optimization algorithm based on invasive weed optimization (IWO) for reduction of the maximum side lobe level (SLL) with specific half power beam width (HPBW) of thinned large multiple concentric circular arrays of uniformly excited isotropic elements. IWO is a powerful optimization technique for many continuous problems. But, for discrete problems, it does not work well. In this paper, the authors propose an improved binary IWO (IBIWO) for pattern synthesis of thinned circular array. The thinning percentage of the array is kept equal to or more than 50% and the HPBW is attempted to be equal to or less than that of a fully populated, uniformly excited, and half wavelength spaced concentric circular array of the same number of elements and rings. Simulation results are compared with previous published results of DE, MPSO, and BBO to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for concentric circular arrays.

The problems of synthesizing the beam patterns of the linear antenna array (LAA) and the circular antenna array (CAA) are addressed. First, an optimization problem is formulated for reducing the maximum sidelobe level (SLL) of the beam patterns. Then, the formulated problem is solved by using the invasive weed optimization (IWO) algorithm. Various simulations are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the IWO algorithm for the synthesis of the beam patterns of the LAA and the CAA. The results show that IWO has a better performance in terms of the accuracy, the convergence rate, and the stability compared with other algorithms for the SLL reductions. Moreover, the electromagnetic simulation results also show that IWO achieves the best performance for the beam pattern synthesis of the antenna arrays in practical conditions.
