A method to control speed and rotor position with improved performance has been described in this research. Various techniques are taken into consideration with their detailed description. During this process new methods are also introduced with their pros and cons. The research includes a detailed study of progressive back-Emf sensing strategies. The relevant methods, which can support estimation, are the back Emf zero-crossing method, integration of voltage, and position estimation by flux and inductance. In this thesis, Extended Kalman filter is utilized for position and speed estimation. Firstly, DC voltage will be applied as an input. Extended Kalman Filter is used to perform state estimation while PID controller is employed to regulate the system state following the reference signal. The proposed solution leads to control of the ripple generated in speed and torque of Brushless DC Motor and improved performance.

According to the chattering problem in the traditional sliding mode observer of the position sensorless control of brushless DC motor, a novel quasi sliding mode observer for rotor position estimation was proposed, which took the error between the actual and estimated currents as sliding surface and tracked the actual rotor position according to the mathematical relationship of back EMF and speed of the motor. Then the sensorless control system of the brushless DC motor based on the novel sliding mode observer was designed. Simulation results showed that the novel sliding mode control method could improve the rotor position estimation accuracy and effectively suppress the chattering problem to enhance the robustness of system.

Initial rotor position information is essential for brushless dc motor in order to ensure its stable operation. A simple method for determining the initial rotor position of a sensor less brushless dc motor at standstill is discussed in the paper. The principle behind the rotor position estimation is based on simple detection and comparison of phase voltages and dc link current responses thus relating it with stator inductances. The advantage of this method of estimation of rotor position is that it requires only three voltage pulse injection, and a resolution of 30o is achieved. Moreover no other parameters of the machine are required. The effectiveness of the method is validated by simulation results in Matlab Simulink platform.
