Precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a meteorological variable that influences the main processes that occur in the atmosphere. It is not a homogeneous variable, but varies both temporally and spatially according to local conditions. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal variability of the PWV in Peru using MODIS satellite data (MOD05/MYD05 products) during the period 2000 to 2017. MODIS-derived PWV values were complemented with ERA-Interim reanalysis data to take the study period back to 1979. PWV values extracted from MODIS and ERA-Interim were compared against in situ values obtained from five radiosonde stations between the years of 2003 and 2016 (non-continuous data). The study was performed over nine sub-regions of the Peruvian territory: coastal, highland, and jungle sub-regions, which in turn were classified into northern, central and southern regions. The analysis of spatial variability was performed using monthly semivariograms and influencing parameters such as sill and range, whereas the temporal variation was examined by time series of monthly, seasonal, and multi-annual means. The Mann-Kendall test was also applied to determine the presence of trends. The spatial analysis evidenced the heterogeneity of the PWV over the study region, and in most of the sub-regions there was directional variability during the austral summer and austral winter, with the Northeast (NE) and East (E) directions having the greatest spatial variability. The omnidirectional analysis of the sill and range showed that there was a high spatial variability of PWV mainly over the northern and southern jungle, even exceeding the limit area of these sub-regions. The temporal analysis shows that this variability occurs more in the north and center of the jungle and in the north coast, where the content of PWV is higher in relation to other regions, while the central and southern highlands have the lowest values. In addition, the trend test determines that there is a slight increase in PWV for the coast and jungle regions of Peru. Validation analysis using the radiosonde data showed a similar performance of both datasets (MODIS and ERA), with better results for the case of the MODIS product (RMSE < 0.6 cm and R2 = 0.71).

AbstractWe study the spatio-temporal variability of Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) and associated integrated water vapor and atmospheric parameters over the Euro-Atlantic region using long-term reanalysis datasets. Winds, temperature, and specific humidity at different pressure levels during 1979–2018 are used to study the water vapor transport integrated between 1000 and 300 hPa (IVT300) in mapping ARs. The intensity of ARs in the North Atlantic has been increasing in recent times (2009–2018) with large decadal variability and poleward shift (~ 5° towards the North) in landfall during 1999–2018. Though different reanalysis datasets show similar spatial patterns of IVT300 in mapping ARs, bias in specific humidity and wind components led to IVT300 mean bias of 50 kg m−1 s−1 in different reanalysis products compared to ERA5. The magnitude of winds and specific humidity in the lower atmosphere (below 750 hPa) dominates the total column water vapor and intensity of ARs in the North Atlantic. Reanalysis datasets in the central North Atlantic show an IVT300 standard deviation of 200 kg m−1 s−1 which is around 33% of the ARs climatology (~ 600 kg m−1 s−1). Though ARs have a higher frequency of landfalling over Western Europe in winter half-year, the intensity of IVT300 in winter ARs is 3% lower than the annual mean. The lower frequency of ARs in the summer half-year shows 3% higher IVT300 than the annual mean. While ARs in the North Atlantic show a strong decadal change in frequency and path, the impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Scandinavian blocking on the location of landfall of ARs are significant. Furthermore, there is a strong latitudinal dependence of the source of moisture flux in the open ocean, contributing to the formation and strengthening ARs.

A processing methodology with GNSS observations to obtain Zenith Tropospheric Delay using Bernese GNSS Software version 5.2 is revised in order to obtain Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV). The most traditional PWV observation method is the radiosonde and it is often used as a standard to validate those derived from GNSS. For this reason, a location in the north of Spain, in A Coruña, which has a GNSS station with available data and also a radiosonde station, was chosen. Two GPS weeks, in different weather conditions were calculated. The result of the comparison between the GNSS- retrieved PWV and Radiosonde-PWV is explained in the last section of this paper.

Abstract December–March climatologies of precipitation and vertically integrated water vapor transport were analyzed and compared to find the main paths by which moisture is fed to high-rainfall regions in the Southern Hemisphere in this season. The southern tropics (20°S–0°) exhibit high rainfall and receive ample moisture from the northern trades, except in the eastern Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. This interhemispheric flow is particularly important for Amazonian rainfall, establishing the North Atlantic as the main source of moisture for the forest during its main rainy season. In the subtropics the rainfall distribution is very heterogeneous. The meridional average of precipitation between 35° and 25°S is well modulated by the meridional water vapor transport through the 25°S latitude circle, being greater where this transport is from the north and smaller where it is from the south. In South America, to the east of the Andes, the moisture that fuels precipitation between 20° and 30°S comes from both the tropical South and North Atlantic Oceans whereas between 30° and 40°S it comes mostly from the North Atlantic after passing over the Amazonian rain forest. The meridional transport (across 25°S) curve exhibits a double peak over South America and the adjacent Atlantic, which is closely reproduced in the mean rainfall curve. This corresponds to two local maxima in the two-dimensional field of meridional transport: the moisture corridor from Amazonia into the continental subtropics and the moisture flow coming from the southern tropical Atlantic into the subtropical portion of the South Atlantic convergence zone. These two narrow pathways of intense moisture flow could be suitably called “aerial rivers.” Their longitudinal positions are well defined. The yearly deviations from climatology for moisture flow and rainfall correlate well (0.75) for the continental peak but not for the oceanic peak (0.23). The structure of two maxima is produced by the effect of transients in the time scale of days.

This study investigates the characteristic differences of tropical disturbances that eventually develop into tropical cyclones (TCs) versus those that did not, using global daily analysis fields of the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) from the years 2003 to 2008. Time filtering is applied to the data to extract tropical waves with different frequencies. Waves with a 3–8-day period represent the synoptic-scale disturbances that are representatives as precursors of TCs, and waves with periods greater than 20 days represent the large-scale background environmental flow. Composites are made for the developing and nondeveloping synoptic-scale disturbances in a Lagrangian frame following the disturbances. Similarities and differences between them are analyzed to understand the dynamics and thermodynamics of TC genesis. Part I of this study focuses on events in the North Atlantic, while Part II focuses on the western North Pacific. A box difference index (BDI), accounting for both the mean and variability of the individual sample, is introduced to subjectively and quantitatively identify controlling parameters measuring the differences between developing and nondeveloping disturbances. Larger amplitude of the BDI implies a greater possibility to differentiate the difference between two groups. Based on their BDI values, the following parameters are identified as the best predictors for cyclogenesis in the North Atlantic, in the order of importance: 1) water vapor content within 925 and 400 hPa, 2) rain rate, 3) sea surface temperature (SST), 4) 700-hPa maximum relative vorticity, 5) 1000–600-hPa vertical shear, 6) translational speed, and 7) vertically averaged horizontal shear. This list identifies thermodynamic variables as more important controlling parameters than dynamic variables for TC genesis in the North Atlantic. When the east and west (separated by 40°W) Atlantic are examined separately, the 925–400-hPa water vapor content remains as the most important parameter for both regions. The SST and maximum vorticity at 700 hPa have higher importance in the east Atlantic, while SST becomes less important and the vertically averaged horizontal shear and horizontal divergence become more important in the west Atlantic.
