Hip fracture incidence is life-threatening and has an impact on the person’s physical functionality and their ability to live independently. Proper rehabilitation with a set program can play a significant role in recovering the person’s physical mobility, boosting their quality of life, reducing adverse clinical outcomes, and shortening hospital stays. The Internet of Things (IoT), with advancements in digital health, could be leveraged to enhance the backup intelligence used in the rehabilitation process and provide transparent coordination and information about movement during activities among relevant parties. This paper presents a post-operative hip fracture rehabilitation model that clarifies the involved rehabilitation process, its associated events, and the main physical movements of interest across all stages of care. To support this model, the paper proposes an IoT-enabled movement monitoring system architecture. The architecture reflects the key operational functionalities required to monitor patients in real time and throughout the rehabilitation process. The approach was tested incrementally on ten healthy subjects, particularly for factors relevant to the recognition and tracking of movements of interest. The analysis reflects the significance of personalization and the significance of a one-minute history of data in monitoring the real-time behavior. This paper also looks at the impact of edge computing at the gateway and a wearable sensor edge on system performance. The approach provides a solution for an architecture that balances system performance with remote monitoring functional requirements.

The Impact

In this paper, we describe a procedure for designing an accurate simulation model using a price-wised linear approach referred to as the power semiconductor converters of a DC microgrid concept. Initially, the selection of topologies of individual power stage blocs are identified. Due to the requirements for verifying the accuracy of the simulation model, physical samples of power converters are realized with a power ratio of 1:10. The focus was on optimization of operational parameters such as real-time behavior (variable waveforms within a time domain), efficiency, and the voltage/current ripples. The approach was compared to real-time operation and efficiency performance was evaluated showing the accuracy and suitability of the presented approach. The results show the potential for developing complex smart grid simulation models, with a high level of accuracy, and thus the possibility to investigate various operational scenarios and the impact of power converter characteristics on the performance of a smart gird. Two possible operational scenarios of the proposed smart grid concept are evaluated and demonstrate that an accurate hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system can be designed.

In this paper, we propose an innovative structural health monitoring (SHM) system for large transmission towers that are frequently subjected to strong winds. The system is based on the strategy of using a static force equilibrium equation to calculate the whole structure’s real-time stress distribution according to its real-time behavior, as captured by the global positioning system (GPS). The reason for adopting this approach is that large transmission towers are fundamentally quasi-static structures and they are not prone to resonance under wind excitations. A case study is used to present the SHM system, then its effectiveness is validated by comparing the simulated SHM results with the exact solution obtained by a realistic time-history dynamic analysis. Additionally, we discuss the use of a new reliability analysis method based on the Ditlevsen’s bounds to assess the real-time structural conditions.

It is widely believed that human interaction is much more regular than has yet been detected. What kinds of hidden regularities exist is, however, unsettled. In this paper a structural hypothesis is proposed where each continuous human interaction is seen as the performance of a set of a particular type of temporal patterns. Some of these repeated intra- and inter-individual real-time behavior patterns may be mutually exclusive in time while others may overlap in various ways. Perceptual limitations making such patterns hidden to the naked eye are illustrated. A computerized detection method and illustrative empirical findings from various types of face-to-face interactions in children and adults are presented. The specially developed pattern detection and analysis software, THEME, is also shortly described.

Shanghai Expo Puxi Entertainment Hall is reconstructed based on existing workshop building. To meet new function requirements of the hall, a structural column is removed and replaced with a jacking beam. A structural safety monitoring system is proposed and applied to evaluate the real-time structural state and ensure the structural safety. Vibrating wire sensors and FBG sensors are installed to monitor the stress of member of the space truss structure; ForesightTM series DSTS (Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensors) is installed to monitor the stress of the jacking beam. Results show that the structural safety monitoring system works stably. The safety monitoring system reflects the real-time behavior of the structure and controls the structural reconstruction safety effectively.

To determine how extracellular signal–regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2 promote mammary tumorigenesis, we examined the real-time behavior of cells in an organotypic culture of the mammary glandular epithelium. Inducible activation of ERK1/2 in mature acini elicits cell motility and disrupts epithelial architecture in a manner that is reminiscent of ductal carcinoma in situ; however, motile cells do not invade through the basement membrane and branching morphogenesis does not take place. ERK1/2-induced motility causes cells to move both within the cell monolayer that contacts the basement membrane surrounding the acinus and through the luminal space of the acinus. E-cadherin expression is reduced after ERK1/2 activation, but motility does not involve an epithelial–mesenchymal transition. Cell motility and the disruption of epithelial architecture require a Rho kinase– and myosin light chain kinase–dependent increase in the phosphorylation of myosin light chain 2. Our results identify a new mechanism for the disruption of architecture in epithelial acini and suggest that ERK1/2 can promote noninvasive motility in preinvasive mammary tumors.
