During the service or external loading of the surface coating, the damage accumulation may develop in the coating or at the interface between the substrate and the coating, but it is difficult to measure directly in the early stage, so the acoustic nonlinear parameters are used as the early damage index of the coating. In this paper, the nonlinear wave motion equation is solved by the perturbation method and the new relationship between the relative ratio of second-order parameter and third-order parameter was derived. The nonlinear ultrasonic testing system is used to detect received signals during tensile testing of for the specimen with Al2O3 coatings. It is found that when the stress is less than 260 MPa, the appearance of the coating has no obvious change, but the nonlinear coefficients measured by the experiment increase with the increase of the tensile stress. By comparing the curves of nonlinear coefficients and stress respectively, the fluctuation of curves the second-order nonlinear coefficient A2 and the relative nonlinear coefficient β′ to stress is relatively small, and close to the linear relationship with the tensile stress, which indicates that the two parameters of the specimen with Al2O3 coatings are more sensitive to the bonding conditions, and can be used as an evaluation method to track the coating damage.

We describe a wavelength conversion experiment (generation of a pulse at the wavelength λp - Δλ from a signal at λp+Δλ under the action of a pump at λp) performed through cascaded second-order process in a lithium niobate channel waveguide. With a 58-mm-long Ti diffused channel waveguide, λp=1.1 μ m (the wavelength of phase matching for the first step of sh generation), Δλ of several nanometers and 20 ps pulse duration, wavelength conversion with unit efficiency is obtained with a pump pulse energy of the order of 102 pJ. The experimental results are successfully interpreted by making use of modal analysis and solving the appropriate nonlinear equations.

We propose a new technique, using femtosecond Fourier-transform spectral interferometry, to measure the second-order nonlinear response of a material in two dimensions of frequency. We show numerically the specific and unique information obtained from such a two-dimensional measurement. The technique is demonstrated by measuring the second-order phase-matching map of two non-resonant nonlinear crystals.

ABSTRACTWe report a novel method to obtain stable second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in polymeric thin films. Photocross-linking between the NLO active molecules and a photoreactive polymer is achieved by UV irradiation subsequent to poling. The thin film exhibits a nonlinear coefficient d33of 16.5 pm/V at a doping level of 20% by weight of NLO active molecules and possesses quite stable second order nonlinear optical properties
