AbstractBased on the related characteristics of optical waveguide and flexible optical materials, a flexible and stretchable optical waveguide structure oriented to tactile perception is proposed. The sensing principle of optical waveguide is based on mechanical deformation caused by output light loss. It overcomes the shortcomings of traditional optical waveguide devices, which are unable to conform to irregular surface. The flexible and stretchable optical waveguide is fabricated with nanoreplica molding method, and it has been applied to the measurement of pressure and strain in the field of tactile sensing. The flexible and stretchable optical waveguide had a strain detection range of 0 to 12.5%, and the external force detection range is from 0 to 23 × 10–3 N.

While criminality is digitizing, a theory-based understanding of the impact of cybercrime on victims is lacking. Therefore, this study addresses the psychological and financial impact of cybercrime on victims, applying the shattered assumptions theory (SAT) to predict that impact. A secondary analysis was performed on a representative data set of Dutch citizens ( N = 33,702), exploring the psychological and financial impact for different groups of cybercrime victims. The results showed a higher negative impact on emotional well-being for victims of person-centered cybercrime, victims for whom the offender was an acquaintance, and victims whose financial loss was not compensated and a lower negative impact on emotional well-being for victims with a higher income. The study led to novel scientific insights and showed the applicability of the SAT for developing hypotheses about cybercrime victimization impact. In this study, most hypotheses had to be rejected, leading to the conclusion that more work has to be done to test the applicability of the SAT in the field of cybercrime. Furthermore, policy implications were identified considering the prioritization of and approach to specific cybercrimes, treatment of victims, and financial loss compensation.

Photobacterium phosphoreum are naturally luminescent marine bacteria, which emit light as a result of metabolism. Any damage to the cellular metabolism caused by a toxic substance can therefore be monitored by measuring the change in light output of the bacteria, the light loss being proportional to the degree of toxicity. The Biotox™ test, based on reconstituted freeze-dried (viable) Photobacterium phosphoreum as the test organism, was used for the short-term toxicity testing of 39 chemicals from the MEIC list. Concentration-effect curves for these 39 chemicals were measured and five-minute EC50 values (the concentration of chemical, mM, which reduces the light output of the bacteria by 50% after contact for five minutes) were calculated. The EC50 data from the Biotox test were correlated with data from the literature: octanol/water partition coefficients, EC50 data from the Microtox™ test, minimal inhibitory concentration values for Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis and acute toxicity data from animal and human cell lines, rodents and man. The correlation coefficients ranged between 0.63 and 0.93.
