Herein, we investigated the effects of Ce on the corrosion behavior of NdFeB magnets in 3.5% NaCl solutions using electrochemical tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM). We demonstrated that Ce markedly enhances the corrosion resistance of NdFeB magnets. Ce primarily replaces Nd in the Nd-rich phase instead of matrix phase, increasing the surface potential of the Nd-rich phase. An increase in the Ce content from 0 to 5.21 wt%, decreased the potential difference between the main phase and (Nd, Ce)-rich phase from 350.2 mV to 97.7 mV; therefore, the corrosion resistance of the magnetic materials increased. The corrosion resistance constituted the Nd-rich phase < the void < metal matrix. Moreover, based on the results of the study, we discussed the impact mechanism of additions of Ce on the corrosion resistance of the magnets.

Pure Ni coating and multi-layered Ni-P coatings were deposited on sintered NdFeB magnets by ion beam sputtering and electroless plating to improve the corrosion resistance of magnets, respectively. The structure and preferred growth orientation, surface morphology, the adhesive strength between coatings and magnets, and corrosion properties of samples were investigated by XRD, SEM, high-low temperature shock test and potentiodynamic polarization curves, respectively. It was found that electroless Ni-P coatings are amorphous with nodules distributed, Ni coating deposited by ion beam sputtering is crystalline and spherical Ni grains are densely packed. Ni coating deposited by ion beam sputtering can provide better protection for sintered NdFeB than that of electroless Ni-P coating.

In order to improve the corrosion resistance of the zinc coating on NdFeB, a novel siloxane functionalised waterborne acrylic copolymer was prepared by combining the self-produced waterborne acrylic copolymer coating with the silica sol precursor.

Purpose – This paper aims to present an experimental investigation of improving the surface corrosion resistance of sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets by electrical discharge machining (EDM) in different dielectric fluids. Design/methodology/approach – Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the surface morphology and chemical structure of recast layers formed by EDM using kerosene and distilled water as the dielectric fluids. Polarization scans and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied to investigate the post-machining corrosion resistance. Findings – The test results indicated that the recast layer produced during EDM had amorphous characteristics, and the newly formed amorphous structure could improve the corrosion resistance of the NdFeB material. The corrosion resistance of the recast layer formed in kerosene was better than that formed in distilled water. Originality/value – Surface corrosion modification of sintered NdFeB magnets by means of electrical discharge with an ordinary copper electrode is proposed in this paper. The layer formed by EDM exhibits different behavior to that of the interior of the bulk material and improves the anti-corrosion performance of NdFeB magnets.
