It is very difficult to provide strong evidence of how flower characteristic that may serve to attract pollinators, improve plant fitness. We propose to use the natural variation that we have observed within our wild tomato (Solanum pimpinellifolium) plant stocks to investigate the effect of anther color on attracting flower-visiting arthropods which act as pollinators. By looking at within-species variation, we can vary anther color while keeping other factors like petal color and other genetically controlled variables constant. We believe that our proposed study makes a significant contribution to the literature because it will allow us to clearly determine the contribution of anther color in attracting pollinators.

ABSTRACTTomato leaf mould disease is caused by the biotrophic fungusCladosporium fulvum. During infection,C. fulvumproduces extracellular small secreted protein (SSP) effectors that function to promote colonization of the leaf apoplast. Resistance to the disease is governed byCfimmune receptor genes that encode receptor-like proteins (RLPs). These RLPs recognize specific SSP effectors to initiate a hypersensitive response (HR) that renders the pathogen avirulent.C. fulvumstrains capable of overcoming one or more of all clonedCfgenes have now emerged. To combat these strains, newCfgenes are required. An effectoromics approach was employed to identify wild tomato accessions carrying newCfgenes. Proteomics and transcriptome sequencing were first used to identify 70 apoplasticin planta-inducedC. fulvumSSPs. Based on sequence homology, 61 of these SSPs were novel or lacked known functional domains. Seven, however, had predicted structural homology to antimicrobial proteins, suggesting a possible role in mediating antagonistic microbe−microbe interactionsin planta. Wild tomato accessions were then screened for HR-associated recognition of 41 SSPs using thePotato virus X-based transient expression system. Nine SSPs were recognized by one or more accessions, suggesting that these plants carry newCfgenes available for incorporation into cultivated tomato.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a broadly consumed fruit vegetable globally. It is one of the research mandate vegetable of the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan, Nigeria. The institute’s contains diverse collections of tomato accessions and wild relatives, without utilization information for the African continent. With the decline in diversity and potential of cultivars, a robust tomato breeding pipeline with broad genetic base that eliminates redundancy in the development of lines with desired horticultural traits is paramount. This study evaluated the mean performance and variations of thirteen wild tomato accessions obtained from the C.M. Rick Tomato Genetic Resource Center, University of California, Davis, USA, evaluated for agronomic, nutritional and physicochemical traits under a rain forest zone in Nigeria. The accessions were planted and grown in three replications with randomized complete block design. Agronomic traits, physicochemical and nutritional parameters were measured and analyzed. There was significant (P < 0.001) variation among accessions for all traits measured. Accession LA0130 was separated from others by cluster analysis and was outstanding for its unique attributes which include: fruit yield parameters, total soluble solids, acidity and content. The principal component analysis suggests fruit yield related traits, acidity and contributed most to the variation among the 13 accessions. The results obtained can be used to breed materials adapted to a rain forest . These wild tomato accessions have genes with desirable agronomic, nutritional and physicochemical traits that could be into breeding lines to improve commercial tomato varieties.
