The variational approach to the Glashow–Weinberg–Salam model, based on canonical quantization, is presented. It is shown that taking into consideration the Becchi–Rouet–Stora symmetry leads to the correct, temperature-dependent, effective potential. This generalization of the Weinberg–Coleman potential leads to a phase transition of the first kind.

We compute the effective potential of SU(2) Yang–Mills theory using the background field method and the Faddeev–Niemi decomposition of the gauge fields. In particular, we find that the potential will depend on the values of two scalar fields in the decomposition and that its structure will give rise to a symmetry breaking.

The vacuum stability of a scalar gφ4 theory in two dimensions is studied. A variational approach is applied to estimate the effective potential in this model. We find that the second order phase transition takes place. It is in complete agreement with the Simon-Griffiths theorem.

Using a two-loop approximation for β functions, we have considered the corresponding renormalization group improved effective potential in the dual Abelian Higgs model (DAHM) of scalar monopoles and calculated the phase transition (critical) couplings in U(1) and SU (N) regularized gauge theories. In contrast to our previous result α crit ≈0.17, obtained in the one-loop approximation with the DAHM effective potential (see Ref. 20), the critical value of the electric fine structure constant in the two-loop approximation, calculated in the present paper, is equal to α crit ≈0.208 and coincides with the lattice result for compact QED10: [Formula: see text]. Following the 't Hooft's idea of the "Abelization" of monopole vacuum in the Yang–Mills theories, we have obtained an estimation of the SU (N) triple point coupling constants, which is [Formula: see text]. This relation was used for the description of the Planck scale values of the inverse running constants [Formula: see text] (i= 1, 2, 3 correspond to U(1), SU(2) and SU(3) groups), according to the ideas of the multiple point model.16

We study the six-dimensional [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] supersymmetric Yang–Mills (SYM) theories in the component formulation. The one-loop divergencies of effective action are calculated. The leading one-loop low-energy contributions to bosonic sector of effective action are found. It is explicitly demonstrated that the contributions to effective potential for the constant background scalar fields are absent in the [Formula: see text] SYM theory.

Abstract We explore the confinement-deconfinement phase transition (PT) of the first order (FO) arising in SU(N) pure Yang-Mills theory, based on Polyakov loop models (PLMs), in light of the induced gravitational wave (GW) spectra. We demonstrate that the PLMs with the Haar measure term, involving models successful in QCD with N = 3, are potentially incompatible with the large N scaling for the thermodynamic quantities and the latent heat at around the criticality of the FOPT reported from the lattice simulations. We then propose a couple of models of polynomial form, which we call the 4-6 PLM (with four- and six-point interactions among the basic PL fields which have center charge 1) and 4-8 PLM (with four- and eight-point interactions), and discuss how such models can naturally arise in the presence of a heavy PL with charge 2. We show that those models give the consistent thermodynamic and large N properties at around the criticality. The predicted GW spectra are shown to have high enough sensitivity to be probed in the future prospected interferometers such as BBO and DECIGO.
