Black holes are classically characterized by event horizon which is the boundary of the region from which particles or photons can escape to infinity in the future direction. Unfortunately this characterization is a global concept as the knowledge of the whole spacetime is needed in order to locate a black hole region and the event horizon. It is therefore important to recognize black holes locally; this has motivated the need to use local approach to characterize black holes. Specifically, we apply covariant divergence and Gauss’s divergence theorems to compute the divergences and the fluxes of appropriate null vectors in the Kerr spacetime to actually determine the existence of trapped and marginally trapped surfaces in its black hole region.

Riemann curvature invariants are important in general relativity because they encode the geometrical properties of spacetime in a manifestly coordinate-invariant way. Fourteen such invariants are required to characterize four-dimensional spacetime in general, and Zakhary and McIntosh showed that as many as seventeen can be required in certain degenerate cases. We calculate explicit expressions for all seventeen of these Zakhary–McIntosh curvature invariants for the Kerr–Newman metric that describes spacetime around black holes of the most general kind (those with mass, charge, and spin), and confirm that they are related by eight algebraic conditions (dubbed syzygies by Zakhary and McIntosh), which serve as a useful check on our results. Plots of these invariants show richer structure than is suggested by traditional (coordinate-dependent) textbook depictions, and may repay further investigation.

Abstract Although BMPV black holes in flat space and in Taub-NUT space have identical near-horizon geometries, they have different indices from the microscopic analysis. For K3 compactification of type IIB theory, Sen et al. in a series of papers identified that the key to resolving this puzzle is the black hole hair modes: smooth, normalisable, bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom living outside the horizon. In this paper, we extend their study to N = 4 CHL orbifold models. For these models, the puzzle is more challenging due to the presence of the twisted sectors. We identify hair modes in the untwisted as well as twisted sectors. We show that after removing the contributions of the hair modes from the microscopic partition functions, the 4d and 5d horizon partition functions agree. Special care is taken to present details on the smoothness analysis of hair modes for rotating black holes, thereby filling an essential gap in the literature.
