AbstractActive-sterile neutrino mixing is known to affect the neutrino oscillation probabilities at both short as well as long-baselines. In particular, constraints on active-sterile neutrino oscillation parameters can be obtained from long-baseline experiments such as T2HK and DUNE. We present here existence of fake solution in the appearance channel for the 3 + 1 scenario at long-baseline experiments. We show that the appearance probability is same for values of $$\Delta m_{41}^2$$Δm412 for which the fast oscillations are averaged out and for $$\Delta m_{41}^2=(1/2)\Delta m_{31}^2$$Δm412=(1/2)Δm312. The fake solution does not appear for the disappearance channel.

Assuming the existence of one light sterile neutrino, we investigate the neutrino flavor mixing matrix in matter. Sum rules between the mixing parameters in vacuum and their counterparts in matter are derived. By using these new sum rules, we obtain the simple but exact expressions of the effective flavor mixing matrix in matter in terms of neutrino masses and the mixing parameters in vacuum. The rephasing invariants, sides of unitarity quadrangles and oscillation probabilities in matter are also achieved. Our model-independent results will be very helpful for analyzing flavor mixing and CP violation in the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract The unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix is a critical assumption underlying the standard neutrino-mixing paradigm. However, many models seeking to explain the as-yet-unknown origin of neutrino masses predict deviations from unitarity in the mixing of the active neutrino states. Motivated by the prospect that future experiments may provide a precise measurement of the lepton mixing matrix, we revisit current constraints on unitarity violation from oscillation measurements and project how next-generation experiments will improve our current knowledge. With the next-generation data, the normalizations of all rows and columns of the lepton mixing matrix will be constrained to ≲10% precision, with the e-row best measured at ≲1% and the τ-row worst measured at ∼10% precision. The measurements of the mixing matrix elements themselves will be improved on average by a factor of 3. We highlight the complementarity of DUNE, T2HK, JUNO, and IceCube Upgrade for these improvements, as well as the importance of ντ appearance measurements and sterile neutrino searches for tests of leptonic unitarity.

Theories with large extra dimensions may be tested using sterile neutrinos living in the bulk. A bulk neutrino can mix with a flavor neutrino localized in the brane leading to unconventional patterns of neutrino oscillations. A resonance phenomenon, strong mixing between the flavor and the sterile neutrino, allows one to determine the radius of the large extra dimension. If our brane is curved, then the sterile neutrino can take a shortcut through the bulk, leading to an apparent superluminal neutrino speed. The amount of "superluminality" is directly connected to parameters determining the shape of the brane. On the experimental side, we suggest that a long baseline neutrino beam from CERN to NESTOR neutrino telescope will help to clarify these important issues.

We study the distortion of electron neutrino energy spectrum due to oscillations with the sterile neutrino νe↔νs, for different initial populations of the sterile state δNs at the onset of oscillations. The influence of this spectrum distortion on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is analyzed. Only the case of an initially empty sterile state was studied in previous publications. The primordial abundance of 4He is calculated for all possible δNs:0≤δNs≤1 in the model of oscillations, effective after electron neutrino decoupling, for which the spectrum distortion effects on the neutron–proton transitions are the strongest. It is found that the spectrum distortion effect may be dominant, not only in the case of small δNs, but also in the case of large initial population of νs. For example, in the resonant case it may play a considerable role even for very large δNs~0.8. Cosmological constraints on neutrino mixing for small δNs are discussed.
