We study the production of a heavy charged Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in [Formula: see text] within a 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). The chiral structure of the [Formula: see text] coupling can trigger a particular spin state of the top quark produced in the decay of a charged Higgs boson and, therefore, is sensitive to the underlying mechanism of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB). Taking two benchmark models (2HDM type-I and 2HDM type-Y) as an example, we show that inclusive rates, differential distributions and forward–backward asymmetries of the top quark’s decay products can be used to search for heavy charged Higgs bosons and also as model discriminators.

We examine the possibility of finding charged Higgs bosons (H±) at the SSC. The charged Higgs boson is produced with a top quark via a gluon+bottom quark interaction (g+b→H+t). For the two Higgs doublet models, H± decays predominantly into t+b. Since the background from QCD processes will be very severe for this decay mode, we studied the H±→τ+ν decay mode. Even for this mode, background from the processes pp→W+t+spectators→ℓ+νℓ+t+spectators will be very high. In the two Higgs doublet models, it is very difficult to extract the charged Higgs signal for reasonable values of the ratio of the two vacuum expectation values ( tan β=v1/v2).

In models with physical charged Higgs bosons, the angular distribution of dū→γH− exhibits a factorization property. The differential cross section has a zero at the scattering cos -1(-⅓) in the γH− C.M. frame. The processes [Formula: see text] are also studied. It is found, at high energies, that the contribution of the sea quarks are significant enough to wash the zero away.

We present a search for t → bH+ in [Formula: see text] candidate events at DØ based on two methods. The first seeks a deficit in signal relative to expectations from the standard model (SM). Such a deficit would imply the presence of a non-SM decay of the top quark. This search involves the full data sample of ≈ 110 pb -1 of [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text], collected with the DØ detector. The second method looks for charged Higgs decays to τ leptons (and associated neutrinos), and is based on a 62 pb -1 subset of the aforementioned data sample.

The impacts of a heavy top quark on the relation between the vector boson masses and the mixing angle at the Z peak, the on-resonance asymmetries, and the Z decay widths are reviewed in the minimal model and extensions within SU (2) × U (1). Of particular interest are models with two scalar doublets where the charged Higgs bosons can give a sizeable negative contribution to the partial width [Formula: see text] This enhancement of the Standard Model top effect can be used to separate models with charged Higgs bosons coupling to the (t, b) doublet from other classes of models affecting only the ρ-parameter. Precision measurements of the Z partial widths will provide significant constraints on the two doublet models if the top quark is very heavy.
