We study the frame dependence of nucleon structure functions obtained within a chiral soliton model for the nucleon. Employing light cone coordinates and introducing collective coordinates together with their conjugate momenta, translational invariance of the solitonic quark fields (which describe the nucleon as a localized object) is restored. This formulation allows us to perform a Lorentz boost to the infinite momentum frame of the nucleon. The major result is that the Lorentz contraction associated with this boost causes the leading twist contribution to the structure functions to properly vanish when the Bjorken variable x exceeds unity. Furthermore we demonstrate that for structure functions calculated in the valence quark approximation to the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio chiral soliton model the Lorentz contraction also has significant effects on the structure functions for moderate values of the Bjorken variable x.

We study nucleon structure functions within the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model where the nucleon emerges as a chiral soliton. As examples we present the unpolarized structure functions for the νp and [Formula: see text] scattering and discuss the Gottfried sum rule in the valence quark approximation. This approximation is justified for moderate constituent quark masses (~ 400 MeV) as the valence quark level dominates the predictions of nucleon properties. We find that these structure functions are well localized in the interval 0≤x Bj ≤1 permitting a parton model interpretation.

In the large Nc limit, the SU(3) flavor representations for the baryons are large. Naively this suggests that predictions for properties of hyperons and nucleons based on the semiclassical approximation in the chiral soliton model get corrections suppressed by only [Formula: see text]. In this paper it is shown by explicit computation that these corrections are actually suppressed by 1/Nc. We also predict relations between the structure functions of the proton that are valid in the large Nc limit.

We outline and review the computations of polarized and unpolarized nucleon structure functions within the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio chiral soliton model. We focus on a consistent regularization prescription for the Dirac sea contribution and present numerical results from that formulation. We also reflect on previous calculations on quark distributions in chiral quark soliton models and attempt to put them into perspective.
