The Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) approach to massive gauge theories in the axial gauge is studied and the smoothness of the massless limit is analysed for a formally gauge invariant quantity such as the Euclidean Wilson loop.

A gauge invariant partition function is defined for gauge theories which leads to the standard quantization. It is shown that the descent equations and consequently the consistent anomalies and Schwinger terms can be extracted from this modified partition function naturally.

We propose a generating functional for nonrelativistic gauge invariant actions. In particular, we consider actions without the usual magnetic term. Like in the Born–Infeld theory, there is an upper bound to the electric field strength in these gauge theories.

A fully relativistic, gauge-invariant, and non-perturbative calculation of the Δ++ magnetic moment, μΔ++, is made using equal-time commutation relations (ETCRs) and the dynamical concepts of asymptotic SU F(2) flavor symmetry and asymptotic level realization. Physical masses of the Δ and nucleon are used in this broken symmetry calculation. It is found that μΔ++=2.04μp, where μp is the proton magnetic moment. This result is very similar to that obtained by using SU(6) ⊗ O(3) symmetry or the static quark model.

A new generalization of the vector Schwinger model is considered where gauge symmetry is broken at the quantum mechanical level. By proper extension of the phase space this broken symmetry has been restored in two different ways. One of these two leads to a BRST-invariant effective action. An equivalent gauge-invariant theory is reformulated even in the usual phase space also.

Non-perturbative Green functions for gauge invariant variables are considered. The Green functions are found to be modified as compared with the usual ones in a definite gauge because of a physical configuration space (PCS) reduction. In the Yang-Mills theory with fermions, this phenomenon follows from the Singer theorem about the absence of a global gauge condition for the fields tending to zero at spatial infinity.

In terms of a gauge-invariant matrix parametrization of the fields, we give an analysis of how the mass gap could arise in non-Abelian gauge theories in two spatial dimensions.
