Two-pion production inαpscattering at 1 GeV/nucleon in the energy region of the Roper resonance excitation

The coupled-channel unitary Lagrangian (Giessen) model is extended to study two pion production within the isobar approximation. The effect from the t-channel pion exchange to the πN → σN reaction is found to be small which is in line with the previous conclusions by the Crystal Ball collaboration. The calculations with the genuine Roper resonance are found to be in nice agreement with both the Crystal Ball measurements of the 2πN production and the GWU single energy solutions in the elastic πN channel.

We report on measurements of baryon resonance and ρ meson production in the exclusive pp → ppπ+π− channel at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5 GeV measured with the HADES experimental setup. The differential distributions are compared to Monte Carlo simulations based on a resonance model assuming an incoherent sum of contributions of various baryonic resonances with masses below 2 GeV and using inputs from one pion production measured in the same experiment. A very good description of the two pion production is achieved allowing for an estimate of the contribution of one and double baryon-resonance excitation. Using appropriate kinematical cuts the ρ meson signal could also be extracted.

The pp→ppx(x=γγ, π0π0, π+π-) reactions have been measured at CELSIUS in the energy range Tp=775-1360 MeV using the WASA 4π detector with hydrogen pellet target. Close to threshold the ppπ+π- data are in accordance with the Roper resonance concept and/or a dynamic formation of the σ meson. At higher energies the formation of the ΔΔ system becomes increasingly dominant. The ppπ0π0 channel basically shows similar features, however, develops a peculiar enhancement at small invariant masses Mπ0π0 - in resemblance of Bose-Einstein correlations. Alternatively, the enhancement could be also indicative of a (dynamic) isospin breaking due to ππ rescattering in the σ channel. The latter is favored by the results on pd→3 He x (x=π0π0, π+π-), where the observed π0π0 enhancements are still much larger. In the γγ channel a line at Mγγ=2mπ is observed. The possible nature of this line is discussed.
