This is a report on some preliminary results of an experiment (Calvelli et al. 1964; Bordner et al. 1965; Bulos et al. 1964 a, b ) performed at the Cosmotron to measure the total cross sections and the angular distributions in the charge exchange reaction π - + p → π 0 + n at eleven energies between 500 and 1150 MeV. The experiment was accomplished by a collaboration between groups of Brandeis, Brown and Harvard Universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in U.S.A. and of Padua University in Italy.

Results based on an analysis of 25% of the pictures obtained from a measurement of the charge-exchange reaction π - p → n 0 n with thick-plate spark chambers are given. Differential and total cross sections for charge-exchange scattering were obtained at five momenta centred about the T = 1/2 resonance found at 2.07 GeV/ c in the π - p total cross section. In the vicinity of the resonance the total cross section is falling smoothly, and the higher coefficients of Legendre polynomial expansions show no significant variation with momentum. From this it is concluded that there is either a complicated interference of several states at the resonance or that the resonance is in a relatively high partial wave and is mainly inelastic.
