The contribution to the Coulomb excitation of the first excited state of 170 due to virtual excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) is calculated, using shell model wavefunctions for the ground and first excited states. A large value is obtained.

Careful measurements of the energy spectrum of photoneutrons ejected from praseodymium and from natural lead show that there are peaks on top of the expected smooth spectrum. Comparison with the recent cross-section studies, which indicate structure on the giant dipole resonance for these nuclei, shows agreement between the energies of the peaks found in the present work and the energies En = E−Qi where E corresponds to a peak in the cross-section curve and Qi is the threshold for producing a given state in the daughter nucleus. Only ground state transitions (for Pr) or ground state and the first two excited state transitions (for Pb) need be invoked.

Coulomb excitation of the O' 718 MeV, In = 1 +, first excited state of lOB has been studied using projectile excitation by 208Pb and observing the backward scattered particles. The results give a clear indication of the virtual excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) as a second-order effect. The observed magnitude is consistent with the usual hydrodynamic model estimate and with a recent shell-model calculation.

Mictrorons are accelerators of electrons and are simultaneous sources of bremsstrahlung photon flux and fission neutrons. In 1982, a microtron of seventeen trajectories Microtron MT - 17 was put into operation at the National Institute of Physics of Vietnam. Though very modest, microtons are very useful for developing countries such as Vietnam in both fundamental and applied physics research. During the recent years by using the above mentioned MT - 17 and microtrons from other institutes we have carried out different investigations. In this report we present some results obtained in the studies of photonuclear reactions and photon activation analysis in the giant dipole resonance region.
