The oxygenation of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) leads to an orthorhombic distortion of the unit cell to accommodate the extra oxygen atom. This makes the formation of twins energetically favourable with CuO4 planar unit chains running alternately along the a and b axes of the parent tetragonal structure. The geometry of this twinning is such that four possible twin variants may co-exist with the twin boundaries lying in the (110) or (110) planes of the deformed structure. The traces of these planes are not mutually perpendicular and thus the crystal is strained to allow for the mismatch. It is to the nature of this strain field that this work has been addressed.Sintered samples were prepared by crushing and dispersing the resultant powder onto a very fine Cu mesh grid. Single crystals were chemically thinned to perforation. No discernible artefacts were seen and similar results were obtained with either method.

Migraineurs with and without aura (MWAs and MWOAs) as well as controls were measured twice with an interval of 7 days. The first session of recordings and tests for migraineurs was held about 7 hours after a migraine attack. We hypothesized that electrophysiological changes in the posterior cerebral cortex related to visual spatial attention are influenced by the level of arousal in migraineurs with aura, and that this varies over the course of time. ERPs related to the active visual attention task manifested significant differences between controls and both types of migraine sufferers for the N200, suggesting a common pathophysiological mechanism for migraineurs. Furthermore, migraineurs without aura (MWOAs) showed a significant enhancement for the N200 at the second session, indicating the relevance of time of measurement within migraine studies. Finally, migraineurs with aura (MWAs) showed significantly enhanced P240 and P300 components at central and parietal cortical sites compared to MWOAs and controls, which seemed to be maintained over both sessions and could be indicative of increased noradrenergic activity in MWAs.

AbstractMechanical stimulation of single cells has been shown to affect cellular behavior from the molecular scale to ultimate cell fate including apoptosis and proliferation. In this, the ability to control the spatiotemporal application of force on cells through their extracellular matrix connections is critical to understand the cellular response of mechanotransduction. Here, we develop and utilize a novel pressure-driven equibiaxial cell stretching device (PECS) combined with an elastomeric material to control specifically the mechanical stimulation on single cells. Cells were cultured on silicone membranes coated with molecular matrices and then a uniform pressure was introduced to the opposite surface of the membrane to stretch single cells equibiaxially. This allowed us to apply mechanical deformation to investigate the complex nature of cell shape and structure. These results will enhance our knowledge of cellular and molecular function as well as provide insights into fields including biomechanics, tissue engineering, and drug discovery.
