The ground state properties of a three-dimensional acoustic polaron are studied using the path integral Monte Carlo technique. In the strong coupling regime, there exists a self-trapped state, which originates from a short ranged electron–phonon interaction, and is of delocalized nature.

Marcus-Hush theory of electron transfer is one of the pillars of modern electrochemistry with a large body of supporting experimental evidence presented to date. However, some predictions, such as the electrochemical behavior at microdisk electrodes, remain unverified. Herein, we present a study of electron tunneling across a hexagonal boron nitride barrier between a graphite electrode and redox levels in a liquid solution. This was achieved by the fabrication of microdisk electrodes with a typical diameter of 5 µm. Analysis of voltammetric measurements, using two common redox mediators, yielded several electrochemical parameters, including the electron transfer rate constant, limiting current, and transfer coefficient. They show a significant departure from the Butler-Volmer behavior in a clear manifestation of the Marcus-Hush theory of electron transfer. In addition, our system provides a novel experimental platform, which could be applied to address a number of scientific problems such as identification of reaction mechanisms, surface modification, or long-range electron transfer.

In this Chapter we address the physics of Bose-Einstein condensation and its implications to a driven-dissipative system such as the polariton laser. We discuss the dynamics of exciton-polaritons non-resonantly pumped within a microcavity in the strong coupling regime. It is shown how the stimulated scattering of exciton-polaritons leads to formation of bosonic condensates that may be stable at elevated temperatures, including room temperature.

This chapter presents experimental studies performed on planar semiconductor microcavities in the strong-coupling regime. The first section reviews linear experiments performed in the 1990s that evidence the linear optical properties of cavity exciton-polaritons. The chapter is then focused on experimental and theoretical studies of resonantly excited microcavity emission. We mainly describe experimental configuations in which stimulated scattering was observed due to formation of a dynamical condensate of polaritons. Pump-probe and cw experiments are described in addition. Dressing of the polariton dispersion and bistability of the polariton system due to inter-condensate interactions are discussed. The semiclassical and the quantum theories of these effects are presented and their results analysed. The potential for realization of devices is also discussed.
