ABSTRACTColloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are luminescent nanoparticles with size- dependent emission spectra spanning a wide range of wavelengths in the visible and near IR. This property, as well as their higher resistance to photo-degradation compared to organic dye labels, makes QDs potentially suitable for certain biomolecule tagging and multiplexing applications. We describe an electrostatic self-assembly approach for conjugating highly luminescent colloidal CdSe-ZnS core-shell QDs with engineered two-domain recombinant proteins to form conjugates for sensing and imaging applications. The design, preparation, and characterization of high quantum yield IgG antibody-binding protein G bioconjugates using luminescence, electrophoretic gel shift, and affinity assays is reported.

<p>Although solvent-ligand interactions play a major role in nanocrystal synthesis, dispersion formulation and assembly, there is currently no direct method to study this. Here we examine the broadening of 1H NMR resonances associated with bound ligands, and turn this poorly understood descriptor into a tool to assess solvent-ligand interactions. We show that the line broadening has both a homogeneous and a heterogeneous component. The former is nanocrystal-size dependent and the latter results from solvent-ligand interactions. Our model is supported by experimental and theoretical evidence that correlates broad NMR lines with poor ligand solvation. This correlation is found across a wide range of solvents, extending from water to hexane, for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ligand types, and for a multitude of oxide, sulfide and selenide nanocrystals. Our findings thus put forward NMR line shape analysis as an indispensable tool to form, investigate and manipulate nanocolloids.</p>

Ultrasoft X-ray emission spectra (USXES) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra with the use of synchrotron radiation in the range of P L2,3-edges were obtained for the first time for nanostructures with InP quantum dots grown on GaAs 〈100〉 substrates by vapor-phase epitaxy from metal–organic compounds. These spectra represent local partial density of states in the valence and conduction bands. The additional XANES peak is detected; its intensity depends on the number of monolayers forming quantum dots. Assumptions are made on the band-to-band origin of luminescence spectra in the studied nanostructures.

The preparation and surface chemistry Si quantum dots (SiQDs) are currently an intense focus of research because of their size dependent optical properties and many potential applications. SiQDs offer several advantages over other quantum dots; Si is earth abundant, non-toxic and biocompatible. This account briefly highlights recent advancements made by our research group related to the synthesis, functionalization, surface dependent optical properties and applications of SiQDs.
