The Stability

The density stratification effects on the thermal convection in a rotating spherical shell, which is the representative of the solar convection zone, are investigated by three dimensional numerical simulations. It is found that, the convection structure in the strongly stratified system is switched from parallel cells aligned to the rotation axis to zonal rolles dominated by the longitudinally averaged mode, as the Rayleigh number increases much larger than the stability threshold. Corresponding to this structural transition, the averaged kinetic helicity reverses the sign in each hemisphere (from negative to positive in the northern hemisphere). The results indicate that the density stratification is much important for the nonlinear convection process in the rotating spherical shell.

ABSTRACTA comprehensive study of MeV-15N-ion-implanted InP by a variety of analytical techniques has revealed the physical processes involved in MeV ion implantation into III-V compound semiconductors as well as the influence of post-implantation annealing. It provides a coherent picture of implant distribution, structural transition, crystalline damage, and lattice strain in InP crystals induced by ion implantation and thermal annealing. The experimental results from the different measurements are summarized in this report. Mechanisms of amorphization by implantation and recrystallization through annealing in MeV-ion-implanted InP are proposed and discussed in light of the results obtained.

The ball-milling of materials is a mechanical grinding method that has different effects on treated materials, and can be used for the direct synthesis of organometal halide perovskite (OHP) crystals. Herein, the effect of such a process, extended over a large temporal window, is related to the properties of referential three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 (MA = methylammonium) and two-dimensional (2D) PEA2PbI4 (PEA = phenylethylammonium) perovskite crystals. For both 2D and 3D systems, the ball-milling induces a reduction of the crystallite dimension, accompanied by a worsening of the overall crystallinity, but without any sign of amorphization. For MAPbI3, an intriguing room temperature structural transition, from tetragonal to cubic, is observed. The processing in both cases impacts on the morphology, with a reduction of the crystal shape quality connected to the particles’ agglomeration tendency. All these effects translate to a “blue shift” of the absorption and emission features, suggesting the use of this technique to modulate the 3D and 2D OHPs’ properties.

The critical behavior of a model describing phase transitions in cubic and tetragonal anti-ferromagnets with 2N-component (N>1) real order parameters as well as the structural transition in NbO 2 crystal is studied within the field-theoretical renormalization-group (RG) approach in three and (4-∊)-dimensions. Perturbative expansions for RG functions are calculated up to three-loop order and resummed, in 3D, by means of the generalized Padé–Borel procedure which is shown to preserve the specific symmetry properties of the model. It is found that a stable fixed point does exist in the three-dimensional RG flow diagram for N>1, in accordance with predictions obtained earlier within the ∊-expansion. Fixed-point coordinates and critical-exponent values are presented for physically interesting cases N=2 and N=3. In both cases critical exponents are found to be numerically close to those of the 3DXY model. The analysis of the results given by the ∊-expansion and by the RG approach in three dimensions is performed resulting in a conclusion that the latter provides much more accurate numerical estimates.
