AbstractA better understanding of magnetic interactions, charge distribution, and redox properties of vanadium oxide nanotubes (VONTs) is necessary for accurate structure and mechanism of formation determination. Magnetic properties have been determined for pristine and lithiated VONTs and for the VONTs arranged in nanourchin morphology. Presence of paramagnetic V4+ ions and V4+ ions coupled in magnetic dimers is found, and their amounts are estimated. Both lithiation and change of morphology to nanourchin destroy the spin-gap behavior, which indicate changes in charge distribution. No ferromagnetic response is observed in lithiated VONTs. Magnetic properties of vanadium oxide nanorods with δ-V4O10 structure are also characterized.

This chapter is devoted to one of key phenomena in the field of spin physics, namely, resonant absorption of electromagnetic waves under conditions where the Zeeman splitting of spin levels in magnetic field is equal to photon energy. This method is particularly important for identification of nuclear spin effects, because resonance spectra provide fingerprints of different involved spin species and make it possible to distinguish different nuclear isotopes. As discussed in this chapter the nuclear magnetic resonance provides also an access to local magnetic fields acting on nuclear spins. These fields are caused by the magnetic interactions between the nuclei and by the quadrupole splittings of nuclear spin states in anisotropic crystalline environment. Manifestations of spin resonance in optical responses of semiconductors–that is, optically detected magnetic resonance–are discussed.

Abstract Theories with both electric and magnetic charges (“mutually non-local” theories) have several major obstacles to calculating scattering amplitudes. Even when the interaction arises through the kinetic mixing of two, otherwise independent, U(1)’s, so that all low-energy interactions are perturbative, difficulties remain: using a self-dual, local formalism leads to spurious poles at any finite order in perturbation theory. Correct calculations must show how the spurious poles cancel in observable scattering amplitudes. Consistency requires that one type of charge is confined as a result of one of the U(1)’s being broken. Here we show how the constraints of confinement and parity conservation on observable processes manages to cancel the spurious poles in scattering and pair production amplitudes, paving the way for systematic studies of the experimental signatures of “dark” electric-magnetic processes. Along the way we demonstrate some novel effects in electric-magnetic interactions, including that the amplitude for single photon production of magnetic particles by electric particles vanishes.

AbstractUnusual magnetic textures can be stabilized in f-electron materials due to the interplay between competing magnetic interactions, complex Fermi surfaces, and crystalline anisotropy. Here we investigate CeAuSb2, an f-electron incommensurate antiferromagnet hosting both single-Q and double-Q spin textures as a function of magnetic fields (H) applied along the c axis. Experimentally, we map out the field-temperature phase diagram via electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements. Supported by calculations of a Kondo lattice model, we attribute the puzzling magnetoresistance enhancement in the double-Q phase to the localization of the electronic wave functions caused by the incommensurate magnetic texture.
