In order to study the Josephson vortex phase diagram in high-Tc superconductors, we have prepared untwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa 2 Cu 3 O y and measured the c-axis resistivity ρc(T) in magnetic fields H parallel to the ab plane. In YBa 2 Cu 3 O y (Tc ~ 60 K ), the vortex liquid phase freezes into the Josephson vortex glass through two-stage processes with decreasing temperature in the high-H region above 5 T. Since the two phase transition lines consist of the first-order transition line T L (H) and the second-order transition line T g (H), the intermediated phase in the region of T g (H) < T < T L (H) is considered to be the vortex slush phase. We find that the oscillatory field dependence of T L (H) corresponds to the commensurability between the vortex spacing and the period of the CuO 2 planes. The lower critical point μ0H lcp ~ 5 T of T L (H) and the vortex slush phase result from the moderate disorder due to the oxygen vacancy in the CuO chain.

We review the topic of quantized vortices in multicomponent Bose–Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases, with an emphasis on the two-component condensates. First, we review the fundamental structure, stability and dynamics of a single vortex state in a slowly rotating two-component condensates. To understand recent experimental results, we use the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations and the generalized nonlinear sigma model. An axisymmetric vortex state, which was observed by the JILA group, can be regarded as a topologically trivial skyrmion in the pseudospin representation. The internal, coherent coupling between the two components breaks the axisymmetry of the vortex state, resulting in a stable vortex molecule (a meron pair). We also mention unconventional vortex states and monopole excitations in a spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate. Next, we discuss a rich variety of vortex states realized in rapidly rotating two-component Bose–Einstein condensates. We introduce a phase diagram with axes of rotation frequency and the intercomponent coupling strength. This phase diagram reveals unconventional vortex states such as a square lattice, a double-core lattice, vortex stripes and vortex sheets, all of which are in an experimentally accessible parameter regime. The coherent coupling leads to an effective attractive interaction between two components, providing not only a promising candidate to tune the intercomponent interaction to study the rich vortex phases but also a new regime to explore vortex states consisting of vortex molecules characterized by anisotropic vorticity. A recent experiment by the JILA group vindicated the formation of a square vortex lattice in this system.

A novel Kosterlitz–Thouless phase and continuous melting transitions are proposed for Josephson vortex systems induced in layered superconductors by strong parallel magnetic fields. The mechanism of the phenomenon is revealed and the phase diagram with a multicritical point is presented.

We observed subbranch splitting in the low-bias vortex-flow branch of a dense-Josephson-vortex state in current-voltage characteristics of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions in the long-junction limit. We suggest that each subbranch corresponds to a plasma mode in serially coupled Josephson junctions, manifested in the Josephson vortex-flow current-voltage characteristics resonating with the plasma modes.

When a magnetic field is applied parallel to the superconducting layers in high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs), vortices become Josphson vortices (JVs). To study the magnetic phase diagram of JVs in strongly anisotropic HTSCs, we propose that the JV flow-resistance measurement is a powerful probe to observe periodic oscillations in the JV flow-resistance against the magnetic field. We could determine the magnetic phase diagram of JVs in Bi -2212, in which there exist a three-dimensionally-ordered state and a two-dimensionally quasi-ordered one.
