The reduction of fluid ripple in pipes is extremely important for the reliability and safety of aircrafts and ships. Currently, most researches only pay attention to the discharge port and ignore the suction port and the inherent characteristic of the axial pump between both ports, which may cause significant underestimation of fluid ripple especially in the closed-loop hydraulic system. Therefore, the aim of this study is to propose a novel passive fluid ripple attenuator, which can simultaneously reduce discharge and suction pulsation of the axial-piston pump, and adapt to the condition of frequent change of load reversing in closed hydraulic system. First, the phase matching rule is discovered between discharge and suction ripple, and then based on that, the proposed discharge and suction self-oscillation principle is verified through simulation on the phase relationship of the pump internal pistons, instead of considering the two separately as before. The attenuator designed with the concept of the discharge and suction self-oscillation principle is presented, and models of how ripple generates and the attenuator works are represented analytically. The corresponding simulation model is established, and the result indicates that the ripple of both ports of the piston pump is weakened significantly. Moreover, one testing platform is developed, and the experimental study is conducted on the discharge and suction ripple. It proves that the proposed attenuator based on discharge and suction self-oscillation principle can reduce the fluid ripple effectively.

The non-local manipulation of spin-entangled states by means of local gating in two parallel 2D topological insulators properly connected to two superconducting electrodes is studied. We calculate analytically the current-phase relationship of the Josephson current making use of the scattering matrix approach and we identify the various local and non-local scattering mechanisms. We show that the Josephson critical current, remarkably, allows a direct quantification of the entanglement manipulation.

per° Mutants of Drosophila melanogaster which are exposed to light-dark cycles (LD) with different Zeitgeber period (T) have a limited range of entrainment. Entrained flies show a characteristic phase relationship of activity to the LD which depends on the period of the driving cycle as expected by oscillator theory. Both facts are taken as evidence that per° possesses endogenous oscillators and that the per gene product is not concerned with central clock structures but rather might be responsible for the mutual coupling between the individual oscillators in a multioscillatory system controlling locomotor activity.

ABSTRACTLaryngeal-supralaryngeal cyclicity has been put forth as an acquisition principle that describes expansion of the phonemic inventory as a bivalent cycle with alternations between the elaboration of laryngeal and supralaryngeal properties of the system (Gierut, 1994). This study evaluated experimentally the claims of the principle by manipulating the domain of the cycle and the phase relationship of the cycle as independent variables, and by monitoring longitudinally the order of emergent phonemic distinctions in the sound systems of seven children with phonological delays (aged 3;4 to 5;8) as the dependent variable. Three general findings emerged: (1) the course of acquisition for all children was consistent with cyclicity; (2) there were no differences in phonemic acquisition between children taught a laryngeal as opposed to a supralaryngeal distinction; and (3) children taught out-of-phase with the cycle evidenced greater phonemic expansion than those taught inphase with the cycle.
