We propose an interpolating ansatz between the strong coupling and weak coupling regimes of a system of spinless interacting fermions in 1D and 2D lattices at half-filling. We address relevant issues such as the existence of Long Range Order, quantum phase transitions and the evaluation of ground state energy. In 1D our method is capable of unveiling the existence of a critical point in the coupling constant at (t/U) c =0.7483 as in fact occurs in the exact solution at a value of 0.5. In our approach this phase transition is described as an example of Bifurcation Phenomena in the variational computation of the ground state energy. In 2D the van Hove singularity plays an essential role in changing the asymptotic behaviour of the system for large values of t/U. In particular, the staggered magnetization for large t/U does not display the Hartree–Fock law [Formula: see text] but instead we find the law [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the system does not exhibit bifurcation phenomena and thus we do not find a critical point separating a CDW state from a fermion "liquid" state.

AbstractUsing mean field approach, we provide analytical and numerical solution of the symmetric Anderson lattice for arbitrary dimension at half filling. The symmetric Anderson lattice is equivalent to the Kondo lattice, which makes it possible to study the behavior of an electron liquid in the Kondo lattice. We have shown that, due to hybridization (through an effective field due to localized electrons) of electrons with different spins and momenta $$\mathbf{k} $$ k and $$\mathbf{k} +\overrightarrow{\pi }$$ k + π → , the gap in the electron spectrum opens at half filling. Such hybridization breaks the conservation of the total magnetic momentum of electrons, the spontaneous symmetry is broken. The state of electron liquid is characterized by a large Fermi surface. A gap in the spectrum is calculated depending on the magnitude of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and value of s–d hybridization for the chain, as well as for square and cubic lattices. Anomalous behavior of the heat capacity at low temperatures in the gapped state, which is realized in the symmetric Anderson lattice, was also found.

AbstractLandau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass m⋆. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Fermi-liquid behavior with pronounced quadratic dependences of the optical scattering rate on temperature and frequency, along with a puzzling elastic contribution to relaxation. The strong increase of the resistivity beyond the Ioffe–Regel–Mott limit is accompanied by a ‘displaced Drude peak’ in the optical conductivity. Our results, supported by a theoretical model for the optical response, demonstrate the emergence of a bad metal from resilient quasiparticles that are subject to dynamical localization and dissolve near the Mott transition.
