We present Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) results of the electric-nuclear quadrupole interaction at lxl Ta located at the nonequivalent cation sites of cubic C-Sm2O3 and monoclinic B-Sm2O3 free of defects. The application of the empirical Cd/Ta correlation found in binary oxides allowed us to correlate the interactions with each site and to identify the single Sm site populated in 111In-implanted B-Sm2O3 experiments. The preferential site occupation of Cd and Ta in B-Samaria is discussed in terms of the “chemistry” of the probe-atoms.

Abstract The principle of the time differential perturbed angular correlation and distribution technique which measures the nuclear quadrupole interaction is briefly described. Some examples are given to show the possibilities of this technique in microscopic studies of materials.

Abstract This paper gives an elementary introduction to time differential perturbed angular correlation of γ-rays emitted from excited nuclei with particular reference to nuclear quadrupole interactions. We start with a comparison to other techniques such as nuclear quadrupole resonance and the Mössbauer effect, quote all necessary formulae, describe a typical spectrometer, list suitable isotopes, and finally give some examples for modern applications.

Abstract Using Bayes’ formula, the parameters in a given model fitting data from perturbed angular correlation of γ-rays (PAC) experiments are all integrated out, giving as the result the total proba-bility for the model. Experimental examples are given from PAC for models containing one and two nuclear quadrupole interactions, respectively. It is shown how the Bayesian formulation leads to a quantification of the probability of the correctness of the models. Furthermore, this method leads to a transparent and intuitively appealing criterion for model selection. Examples are given using PAC measurements on two proteins: liver alcohol dehydrogenase and azurin.

New Applications

The application of hyperfine interaction techniques to problems in solid state physics has been stead-ily growing over the last decade with the use of radioactive ion beam facilities such as ISOLDE at CERN. New applications of the e--γ Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) technique are underway at ISOLDE using probe nuclei with highly converted cascades. In this paper we present the motivation for extend-ing PAC experiments to elements/isotopes not usable with the conventional γ-γ PAC technique. Examples will be shown where the long-lived 73As/ 73Ge, the short lived 127Ba/ 127Cs and the 197mHg/ 197Hg decay cascades are applied to measurements of nuclear quadrupole interactions in materials.
