ABSTRACT The distributions of 13 variables based on 10 laboratory tests measuring thyroid function were studied in euthyroid controls and in patients with toxic diffuse or toxic multinodular goitre. Density functions were fitted to the empirical data and the goodness of fit was evaluated by the use of the χ2-test. In a few instances there was a significant difference but the material available was in some respects too small to allow a very accurate estimation. The normal limits for each variable was defined by the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles. It appears that in some instances these limits are too rigorous from the practical point of view. It is emphasized that the crossing point of the functions for euthyroid controls and hyperthyroid patients may be a better limit to use. In a preliminary analysis of the diagnostic efficiency the variables of total or free hormone concentration in the blood proved clearily superior to all other variables.

A novel, simple, accurate, sensitive, precise and economical derivative spectroscopic method was developed and validated for the determination of cefadroxil and probenecid in synthetic mixture. First order derivative spectroscopy method was adopted to eliminate spectral interference. The method obeys Beer’s Law in concentration ranges of 4-36 μg/ml for cefadroxil and of 5-25 μg/ml of probenecid. The zero crossing point for cefadroxil and probenecid was 260 nm and 237.8 nm respectively in 0.1N HCl. The method was validated in terms of accuracy, precision, linearity, limits of detection, limits of quantitation. This method has been successively applied to synthetic mixture and no interference from the synthetic mixture’s excipients was found.

We have begun a program to establish a dynamical reference frame based on the motions of minor planets. The program will utilize observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, and will ultimately tie the HIPPARCOS reference system to a dynamical base. Thirty-four minor planets, 20 of which are suitable for observation with the Hubble Space Telescope, have been selected. Ground based observations, particularly crossing-point observations with long focus reflectors, have been initiated.A computer program to simultaneously solve for the corrections of the orbits of the 34 minor planets including the crossing-point observations, was successfully run. The observations are treated by the method of W. H. Jeffreys. Using simulated data, solutions with and without crossing point observations demonstrate the value of those observations to produce a homogeneous and coherent set of results.

This study examines the human behavioral dynamics of pedestrians crossing a street with vehicular traffic. To this end, an experiment was constructed in which human participants cross a road between two moving vehicles in a virtual reality setting. A mathematical model is developed in which the position is given by a simple function. The model is used to extract information on each crossing by performing root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) minimization of the function from the data. By isolating the parameter adjusted to gap features, we find that the subjects primarily changed the timing of the acceleration to adjust to changing gap conditions, rather than walking speed or duration of acceleration. Moreover, this parameter was also adjusted to the vehicle speed and vehicle type, even when the gap size and timing were not changed. The model is found to provide a description of gap affordance via a simple inequality of the fitting parameters. In addition, the model turns out to predict a constant bearing angle with the crossing point, which is also observed in the data. We thus conclude that our model provides a mathematical tool useful for modeling crossing behaviors and probing existing models. It may also provide insight into the source of traffic accidents.

AbstractThe serial crystallography (SX) technique enables the determination of the room-temperature structure of a macromolecule while causing minimal radiation damage, as well as the visualization of the molecular dynamics by time-resolved studies. The fixed-target (FT) scanning approach is one method for SX sample delivery that minimizes sample consumption and minimizes physical damage to crystals during data collection. Settling of the crystals on the sample holder in random orientation is important for complete three dimensional data collection. To increase the random orientation of crystals on the sample holder, we developed a polyimide mesh-based sample holder with irregular crystal mounting holes for FT-SX. The polyimide mesh was fabricated using a picosecond laser. Each hole in the polyimide mesh has irregularly shaped holes because of laser thermal damage, which may cause more crystals to settle at random orientations compared to regular shaped sample holders. A crystal sample was spread onto a polyimide-mesh, and a polyimide film was added to both sides to prevent dehydration. Using this sample holder, FT-SX was performed at synchrotron and determined the room-temperature lysozyme structure at 1.65 Å. The polyimide mesh with irregularly shaped holes will allow for expanded applications in sample delivery for FT-SX experiments.
