Consistent bosonization treatment of interacting fermion systems in dimensions higher than one: Requirement for a Luttinger-liquid state

Within a consistent bosonization treatment in which all the physically-relevant excitations are taken into account, we show explicitly and non-perturbatively for the first time that, for regular interactions, the infrared catastrophe is eliminated by the zero-frequency particle-hole-pair excitations so that the Luttinger liquid state does not appear in dimensions higher than one. The infrared catastrophe is scarce even for systems with singular interactions due to these excitations. We find that the system remains in a Fermi liquid state for the case of unscreened Coulomb interaction.
