The Kondo problem of a magnetic impurity embedded in the Lieb lattice is studied by the numerical renormalization group. The magnetic impurity hybridizes with conduction electrons from both the flat- and the soft-gap bands. We find a competition between the soft gap and the molecular Kondo singlet formations. The molecular Kondo effect occurs only when the magnetic impurity strongly hybridizes with conduction electrons at edge center sites of the Lieb lattice, and at the temperature range between the artificial strong coupling and the local moment regimes.

We give simple expressions for the low temperature susceptibility of cubic and hexagonal Kondo alloys containing cerium as the magnetic impurity. We fit our expressions to data for cubic La-Ce and cubic (La-Ce)Al2, and to measurements of the parallel susceptibility in hexagonal Y-Ce.

The Kondo effect of the Anderson impurity in a correlated conduction electron system is studied with the slave boson mean-field theory. The interacting conduction electrons are described by a Hubbard model with an interaction of strength U. It is shown that the Kondo temperature T K decreases with an increase of U. In the intermediate regime at half-filling, the exponential scale of the Kondo temperature T K is already lost at the saddle-point level of slave boson formulation.
