ABSTRACTA 100-ps-resolution electron pulse was used to study a 25-nm thick gold single crystal irradiated by a synchronized infrared optical pulse. The change in electron diffraction intensity following laser heating (the Debye-Waller effect) was measured as a function of delay time. The relaxation of a crystal lattice distortion in the surface region appears to explain an observed oscillation in time of the scattered electron intensity. This novel technique provides a sensitive structure probe for short-time dynamics and is, we believe, the fastest lattice temperature probe.

The theoretic renormalization-group approach is applied to the study of short-time dynamics of the d-dimensional n-component spin systems with long-range interactions r-(d+σ) and quenched disorder which has long-range correlations r-(d-ρ). Asymptotic scaling laws are obtained in a frame of double expansions in ∊=2σ-d and ρ with ρ of the order ∊. The static exponents are obtained exactly to all the order. The initial slip exponents θ′ for the order parameter and θ for the response function, as well as the dynamic exponent z, are calculated upto the first order in ∊. In d=2σ, in contrast to the unique logarithmic decay in the long-time regime which does not depend on σ, ρ, n and the disorder, we find rich scaling structures including logarithmic and exponential-logarithmic scalings in the short-time regime. Non-universal critical scalings of Ising systems are also discussed for d=2σ.

AbstractWe present an analysis of short time-scale intensity variations in the coronal green line as obtained with high time resolution observations. The observed data can be divided into two groups. The first one shows periodic intensity variations with a period of 5 min. the second one does not show any significant intensity variations. We studied the relation between regions of coronal intensity oscillations and the shape of white-light coronal structures. We found that the coronal green-line oscillations occur mainly in regions where open white-light coronal structures are located.

The short-time critical behavior of the random n-vector model with long-range interaction is studied by the theoretic renormalization-group approach. After a sudden quench to the critical temperature from the high temperature phase, the system is released to an evolution within model A dynamics. The initial slip exponents and the dynamic exponent are calculated to two-loop order.

Treelike structures abound in natural as well as man-made transport systems, which have fascinated multidisciplinary researchers to study the transport phenomena and properties and understand the transport mechanisms of treelike structures for decades. The fluid flow and heat transfer in treelike networks have received an increasing attention over the past decade as the highly efficient transport processes observed in natural treelike structures can provide useful hints for optimal solutions to many engineering and industrial problems. This review paper attempts to present the background and research progress made in recent years on the transport phenomenon in treelike networks as well as technological applications of treelike structures. The subtopics included are optimization of branching structures, scaling laws of treelike networks, and transport properties for laminar flow, turbulent flow, heat conduction, and heat convection in treelike networks. Analytical expressions for the effective transport properties have been derived based on deterministic treelike networks, and the effect of branching parameters on the transport properties of treelike networks has also been discussed. Furthermore, numerical simulation results for treelike microchannel networks are presented as well. The proposed transport properties may be beneficial to understand the transport mechanisms of branching structures and promote the applications of treelike networks in engineering and industry.
