Abstract Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs) offer a way of imaging nucleons through 3D tomography. They can be accessed experimentally in processes such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP), where a high energy electron scatters from a quark inside a nucleon and a high energy photon or meson is produced as a result. Jefferson Lab has recently completed its energy upgrade and Hall B houses the new, large-acceptance CLAS12 detector array optimised for measurements of DVCS and DVMP in the newly accessible kinematic regime. Measurements on the proton and neutron are complementary and both are necessary to facilitate access to the full set of GPDs and enable their flavour separation. Neutron DVCS and DVMP are possible with the use of a deuteron target – the first CLAS12 experiment with which has started taking data this year. To enable exclusive reconstruction of DVCS and neutral-meson DVMP, a dedicated detector for recoiling neutrons – the Central Neutron Detector (CND) – was integrated into CLAS12. We present the first CLAS12 deuteron-target experiment, with a focus on the performance of the CND.

I review work on diffractive vector meson production in photon–proton collisions at high energy and large momentum transfer, accompanied by proton dissociation and a large rapidity gap. This process provides a test of the high energy scattering dynamics, but is also sensitive to the details of the treatment of the vector meson vertex.The emphasis is on the description of the process by a solution of the non-forward BFKL equation, i.e. the equation describing the evolution of scattering amplitudes in the high-energy limit of QCD. The formation of the vector meson and the nonperturbative modeling needed is also briefly discussed.

A review is given of the measurements of the diffractive process in recent years from two high-energy colliders, the HERA ep collider and the Tevatron [Formula: see text] collider. The energy dependence of the cross sections and the factorisation properties of diffractive processes are discussed.

This review concentrates primarily on the problem of interpreting the recent X-ray and γ-ray observations of celestial sources. The expected fluxes of hard radiation from various processes are estimated (when possible) and are compared with the observations. We compute the synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, and (inverse) Compton spectra originating from relativistic electrons produced (via meson production) in the galaxy and intergalactic medium by cosmic ray nuclear collisions; the spectra from π°-decay are also computed. Neutron stars, stellar coronae, and supernova remnants are reviewed as possible X-ray sources. Special consideration is given to the processes in the Crab Nebula. Extragalactic objects as discrete sources of energetic photons are considered on the basis of energy requirements; special emphasis is given to the strong radio sources and the possibility of the emission of hard radiation during their formation. The problem of the detection of cosmic neutrinos is reviewed.As yet, no definite process can be identified with any of the observed fluxes of hard radiation, although a number of relevant conclusions can be drawn on the basis of the available preliminary observational results. In particular, some cosmogonical theories can be tested.
