ABSTRACT(Ybx Y1-x)2O3 (x = 0.0, 0.005, 0.05, 0.08 and 0.15) promising single crystal laser rods of 4.2 mm in diameter and 15–20 mm in length have been grown from the rhenium crucible by the micro-pulling-down method in Ar + H2(3–4%) atmosphere. Linear decrease of lattice constant with the increase of Yb3+-content was observed. High homogeneity of the Yb3+-dopant distribution has been demonstrated. Absorption, emission and Raman spectra have been recorded and decay time was approximated.

AbstractThe thermodynamic quantities of the isothermal compressibility, thermal expansion and the specific heat are calculated here as a function of pressure by using the observed Raman frequencies of the lattice modes and vibrons in the η phase of solid nitrogen. The Pippard relations and their spectroscopic modifications are constructed, and the slope dP/dT is deduced from the Raman frequency shifts in this phase of N2. It is shown that the thermodynamic quantities can be predicted from the Raman frequency shifts, in particular, in the η phase of solid nitrogen.

A method for the X-ray determination of lattice-plane distances is given. Similar to Bond's method, it is based on the measurement of rocking curves, with some advantages and disadvantages compared with the former method. The new method is especially designed for single-crystal stress measurement. Its usefulness is demonstrated in two examples of lattice-constant and stress measurement.

The spin-density-wave (SDW) effects in Cr-Si and Cr-Ga alloy single crystals were investigated by means of thermal expansion, electrical resistivity and ultrasonic wave velocity measurements. The complete temperature-concentration and temperature-pressure magnetic phase diagrams of Cr-Ga were constructed.
