When a rectangular bar is subjected to uniaxial tension, the bar usually deforms (approximately) homogeneously and isoaxially until a critical load is reached. A bifurcation, such as the formation of shear bands or a neck, may then be observed. One approach is to model such an experiment as the in-plane extension of a two-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic, incompressible, hyperelastic material in which the length of the bar is prescribed, the ends of the bar are assumed to be free of shear and the sides are left completely free. It is shown that standard constitutive hypotheses on the stored-energy function imply that no such bifurcation is possible in this model due to the fact that the homogeneous isoaxial deformation is the unique absolute minimizer of the elastic energy. Thus, in order for a bifurcation to occur either the material must cease to be elastic or the stored-energy function must violate the standard hypotheses. The fact that no local bifurcations can occur under the assumptions used herein was known previously, since these assumptions prohibit the load on the bar from reaching a maximum value. However, the fact that the homogeneous deformation is the absolute minimizer of the energy appears to be a new result.

Οι πυρήνες των πρώιμων αντιδραστήρων πυρηνικής σχάσης έρευνας και παραγωγής με επιβραδυντή τον γραφίτη στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, λειτουργούσαν σε θερμοκρασίες κάτω των 150°C. Λόγω αυτής της χαμηλής θερμοκρασίας, ο γραφίτης του πυρήνα τους περιέχει σημαντικές ποσότητες αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας (Wigner) που μπορεί να απελευθερωθεί με τη θέρμανση του γραφίτη πάνω από τη θερμοκρασία ακτινοβόλησης. Αυτή η εξώθερμη συμπεριφορά οδήγησε σε μια σειρά ζητημάτων κατά τον παροπλισμό τους, που σχετίζονται με τη μακροπρόθεσμη «ασφαλή αποθήκευση», την αποσυναρμολόγηση του πυρήνα του αντιδραστήρα, τη συσκευασία των απορριμμάτων γραφίτη και την τελική διάθεση των ακτινοβολημένων αποβλήτων γραφίτη. Η απελευθέρωση της αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας μπορεί να μοντελοποιηθεί χρησιμοποιώντας κινητικά μοντέλα. Αυτά τα μοντέλα βασίζονται σε εμπειρικά δεδομένα που λαμβάνονται είτε από δείγματα γραφίτη που έχουν ακτινοβοληθεί σε αντιδραστήρες δοκιμών υλικών (MTR) είτε σε δεδομένα που λαμβάνονται από μικρά δείγματα που λαμβάνονται από τους ίδιους τους αντιδραστήρες. Τα δεδομένα από αυτά τα πειράματα χρησιμοποιούνται για την εξαγωγή των ενεργειών ενεργοποίησης και των χαρακτηριστικών συναρτήσεων των αντιδράσεων απελευθέρωσης που χρησιμοποιούνται σε κινητικά μοντέλα. Η παρούσα διατριβή περιλάμβανε την ανάπτυξη κατανόησης των διαφορετικών ποιοτήτων γραφίτη, τη συσχέτιση της συσσώρευσης αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας με το ιστορικό λειτουργίας του αντιδραστήρα και τη διερεύνηση ιστορικών δεδομένων πειραμάτων απελευθέρωσης αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας. Η απελευθέρωση της αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας στις διάφορες συνθήκες που ισχύουν κατά τον παροπλισμό του αντιδραστήρα έχει διεξαχθεί με τη χρήση τεχνικών θερμικής ανάλυσης όπως η θερμιδομετρία διαφορικής σάρωσης (DSC). Αναπτύχθηκαν, επικυρώθηκαν και εφαρμόστηκαν κινητικά μοντέλα, κατάλληλα για τη μελέτη της απελευθέρωσης της αποθηκευμένης ενέργειας σε ακτινοβολημένα υπολείμματα γραφίτη. Αναπτύχθηκε μια δυνητικά έγκυρη μέθοδος, για τον προσδιορισμό του αποθηκευμένου ενεργειακού περιεχομένου των συστατικών του γραφίτη και της κινητικής της απελευθέρωσης ενέργειας. Μια άλλη παράμετρος που διερευνήθηκε σε αυτή τη μελέτη ήταν αφιερωμένη στην προσομοίωση της βλάβης από ακτινοβολία χρησιμοποιώντας ακτινοβολία ιόντων. Ο βομβαρδισμός ιόντων μικρών δειγμάτων γραφίτη είναι μια προσβάσιμη μέθοδος προσομοίωσης της βλάβης από ακτινοβολία ταχέων νετρονίων. Προκειμένου να αποκτηθει εμπιστοσύνη ότι η βλάβη από την ακτινοβολία ιόντων είναι ένα καλό μοντέλο προσομοίωσης για τη βλάβη από ακτινοβολία νετρονίων, διερευνήθηκαν επίσης οι ιδιότητες και η μικροδομή διαφόρων τύπων πυρηνικού γραφίτη που ακτινοβολήθηκε με ιόντα. Η φασματοσκοπία Raman χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να συγκριθούν τα αποτελέσματα του βομβαρδισμού ιόντων με τα αναφερόμενα από την βιβλιογραφία αποτελέσματα της ακτινοβολίας νετρονίων. Οι αλλαγές στην περιεκτικότητα σε ασυνέχειες πλέγματος με τη θερμική ανόπτηση του ακτινοβολούμενου γραφίτη με ιόντα, συγκρίθηκαν με την ανόπτηση του πυρηνικού γραφίτη ακτινοβολημένου με νετρόνια.

Collagen fibers form the basic structural components of extracellular matrix (ECM) of vertebrates that serve to: (1) store elastic energy during muscular deformation, (2) transmit stored energy into joint movement, and (3) transfer excess energy from the joint back to the attached muscles for dissipation. They also act as mechanotransducers by transferring stress borne by the musculoskeleton to the attached cells in order to either up - or down - regulate tissue metabolism as a result of changes in mechanical loading. Finally, they prevent premature mechanical failure of tissues by limiting deformation of most ECMs and organs.

Stored energy plays a crucial role in recrystallization process. One can distinguish two contributions to this energy. The first one is the elastic energy, connected with residual stresses, i.e., with grain-grain interaction. Another part of the stored energy is due to dislocation density, which is mainly localized inside grains. The latter one is considered as a main driving force of recrystallization. However, the stored energy connected with residual stresses can also have some influence on this process. Both types of energy can be determined experimentally and predicted by deformation models. Taking into account both types of the stored energy, some features of recrystallization textures can be explained.

Abstract A method for determining the critical tearing energy in rubber-like materials is proposed. In this method, the energy required for crack propagation in a rubber-like material is determined by the change of the recovered elastic energy. Hence, the dissipated energy due to different inelastic processes is deducted from the total strain energy applied to the system. Therefore, the classical method proposed by Rivlin and Thomas using the pure shear tear test is modified using the actual stored elastic energy. The elastically stored energy in a pure shear is determined experimentally using cyclic loading under quasi-static loading rate of 0.01 s-1 for different unloading rates, i.e. 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 s-1. The experimental results show that the classical method overestimates the critical tearing energy by approximately 18% and the unloading rate is minimal which suggests that the dissipation depends only on the loading path.
