The sequencing of the black 6 mouse (strain C57Bl/6) has reached an important juncture. The BAC fingerprint map is almost complete, the BACs have been endsequenced and a seven-fold coverage whole-genome shotgun has been assembled. Now the BAC-by-BAC sequencing phase is under way and in-depth comparative analysis can be carried out on regions that have been the subject of targeted sequencing. This paper reviews the progress so far and looks forward to the promises of finished sequence.

Whole-genome shotgun sequences and bottom-up assembly of contigs of six skin isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes, viz., NS88.3 (emm98.1), NS223 (emm91), NS455 (emm52), SS1448 (emm86.2), SS1572 (emm223), and SS1574 (emm224), are presented here. All contigs were annotated, and the gene arrangements and the inferred proteins were consistent with a pattern D classification.

The whole-genome shotgun sequence of a moderately halophilic bacterium, Halomonas sp. strain SBS 10, was assembled and studied. The assembled genome size was 1.5 Mb, with a G+C content of 63.6%. The genome sequence of this Halomonas sp. SBS 10 isolate will be valuable in understanding gene clusters and functions involved in the adaptability of this bacterium to hypersaline conditions.
