AbstractAn infant’s risk of developing neuromotor impairment is primarily assessed through visual examination by specialized clinicians. Therefore, many infants at risk for impairment go undetected, particularly in under-resourced environments. There is thus a need to develop automated, clinical assessments based on quantitative measures from widely-available sources, such as video cameras. Here, we automatically extract body poses and movement kinematics from the videos of at-risk infants (N=19). For each infant, we calculate how much they deviate from a group of healthy infants (N=85 online videos) using Naïve Gaussian Bayesian Surprise. After pre-registering our Bayesian Surprise calculations, we find that infants that are at higher risk for impairments deviate considerably from the healthy group. Our simple method, provided as an open source toolkit, thus shows promise as the basis for an automated and low-cost assessment of risk based on video recordings.

A simple and low-cost electrochemical CEA immunosensor was investigated via the self-polymerization of dopamine and a dithiol compound spacer for the covalent immobilization of antibodies. The designed CEA immunosensor exhibited a linear response and a low detection limit.

AbstractA carefully designed ammonium sulfate precipitation will simplify extraction of proteins and is considered to be a gold standard among various precipitation methods. Therefore, optimization of ammonium sulfate precipitation can be an important functional step in protein purification. The presence of high amounts of ammonium sulphate precludes direct detection of many enzymatically active proteins including reducing sugar assays (e.g. Nelson-Somogyi, Reissig and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid methods) for assessing carbohydrases (e.g. laminarinase (β (1–3)-glucanohydrolase), cellulases and chitinases). In this study, a simple method was developed using laminarin infused agarose plate for the direct analysis of the ammonium sulphate precipitates from Streptomyces rimosus AFM-1. The developed method is simple and convenient that can give accurate results even in presence of ammonium sulfate in the crude precipitates. Laminarin is a translucent substrate requiring the use of a stain to visualize the zones of hydrolysis in a plate assay. A very low-cost and locally available fluorescent optical fabric brightener Tinopal CBS-X has been used as a stain to detect the zones of hydrolysis. We also report simple methods to prepare colloidal chitin and cell free supernatant in this manuscript.

Abstract Opto-microfluidic methods have advantages for manufacturing complex shapes or structures of micro particles/hydrogels. Most of these microfluidic devices are made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by soft lithography because of its flexibility of designing and manufacturing. However, PDMS scatters ultraviolet (UV) light, which polymerizes the photocrosslinkable materials at undesirable locations and clogs the microfluidic devices. A fluorescent dye has previously been employed to absorb the scattered UV light and shift its wavelength to effectively solve this issue. However, this method is limited due to the cost of the materials (tens of dollars per microchip), the time consumed on synthesizing the fluorescent material and verifying its quality (two to three days). More importantly, significant expertise on material synthesis and characterization is required for users of the opto-microfluidic technique. The cost of preliminary testing on multiple iterations of different microfluidic chip designs would also be excessive. Alternatively, with a delicate microchannel design, we simply inserted aluminum foil strips (AFS) inside the PDMS device to block the scattered UV light. By using this method, the UV light was limited to the exposure region so that the opto-microfluidic device could consistently generate microgels longer than 6 h. This is a nearly cost- and labor-free method to solve this issue.

Laser interferometry is a well-established technique for the characterization of piezoelectric actuators. In this work, by using a low cost Michelson interferometer, the measurement of the calibration factor and the displacement amplification of a novel piezoelectric flextensional actuator (PFA), designed by using the topology optimization method, is performed. A simple method, based on small phase modulation depth when the PFA is driven by a triangular waveform, allows the absolute interferometer calibration. The free-displacement of the PFA for various drive voltages is measured and the displacement amplification is determined. The linearity and frequencyresponse of the PFA are evaluated up to 20 kHz

We developed a simple method to fabricate SiO2-sphere-supported N-doped CNTs (NCNTs) for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. EMW absorption was tuned by adsorption of the organic agent on the precursor of the catalysts. The experimental results show that the conductivity loss and polarization loss of the sample are improved. Meanwhile, the impedance matching characteristics can also be adjusted. When the matching thickness was only 1.5 mm, the optimal 3D structure shows excellent EMW absorption performance, which is better than most magnetic carbon matrix composites. Our current approach opens up an effective way to develop low-cost, high-performance EMW absorbers.

<p>The term Arrhythmia refers to any change from the normal sequence in the electrical impulses. It is also treated as abnormal heart rhythms or irregular heartbeats. The rate of growth of Cardiac Arrhythmia disease is very high &amp; its effects can be observed in any age group in society. Arrhythmia detection can be done in many ways but effective &amp; simple method for detection &amp; diagnosis of  Cardiac Arrhythmia is by doing analysis of Electrocardiogram signals from ECG sensors. ECG signal can give us the detail information of heart activities, so we can use ECG signals to detect the rhythm &amp; behaviour of heart beats resulting into detection &amp; diagnosis of Cardiac Arrhythmia. In this paper new &amp; improved methodology for early Detection &amp; Classification of Cardiac Arrhythmia has been proposed. In this paper ECG signals are captured using ECG sensors &amp; this ECG signals are used &amp; processed to get the required data regarding heart beats of the human being &amp; then proposed methodology applies for Detection &amp; Classification of Cardiac Arrhythmia. Detection of Cardiac Arrhythmia using ECG signals allows us for easy &amp; reliable way with low cost solution to diagnose Arrhythmia in its prior early stage.</p>

Superhydrophobic surfaces were prepared using a very simple and low-cost method by spray coating. A high static water contact angle of about 154° was obtained by deposition of stearic acid on an aluminium alloy. However, this coating demonstrated a high contact angle hysteresis (~ 30º). On the other hand, superhydrophobic surfaces with a static contact angle of about 162º and 158º, and a low contact angle hysteresis of about 3º and 5º were respectively obtained by incorporating nanoparticles of SiO2and CaCO3in stearic acid. The excellent resulting hydrophobicity is attributed to the synergistic effects of micro/nanoroughness and low surface energy. A study of the wettability of these surfaces at temperatures ranging from 20 to-10 °C showed that the superhydrophobic surface becomes rather hydrophobic at supercooled temperatures.

Current research supports the strong potential of structural MRI profiles, even within cross-sectional designs, as a promising method for the discrimination of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) from normal controls and for the prediction of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) progression and conversion to AD. Findings suggest that measures of structural change in mesial and lateral temporal, cingulate, parietal and midfrontal areas may facilitate the assessment of a treatment's ability to halt the progressive structural loss that accompanies clinical decline in MCI. The performance of prediction is likely to continue to improve with the incorporation of measures from other neuroimaging modalities, clinical assessments, and neuromedical biomarkers, as the regional profile of individuals at risk for progression is refined.

We document large gaps between parents knowledge and school reports of students attendance and grades. Sending frequent text messages with information on attendance, grades and school behavior shrinks those gaps. Parents of at-risk students adjust their understanding of their children's performance to the greatest degree. High-frequency text messages had positive impacts on grades and attendance. Math GPA increased 0.08 of a standard deviation; the probability of earning a passing grade in math increased by 2.7 percentage points (relative to a mean of 90 percent). The intervention also reduced school absenteeism by 1 percentage point and increased the share of students who met attendance requirements for grade promotion by 4.5 percentage points.
