AbstractInvestigating the emergence of a particular cell type is a recurring theme in models of growing cellular populations. The evolution of resistance to therapy is a classic example. Common questions are: when does the cell type first occur, and via which sequence of steps is it most likely to emerge? For growing populations, these questions can be formulated in a general framework of branching processes spreading through a graph from a root to a target vertex. Cells have a particular fitness value on each vertex and can transition along edges at specific rates. Vertices represents cell states, say genotypes or physical locations, while possible transitions are acquiring a mutation or cell migration. We focus on the setting where cells at the root vertex have the highest fitness and transition rates are small. Simple formulas are derived for the time to reach the target vertex and for the probability that it is reached along a given path in the graph. We demonstrate our results on several scenarios relevant to the emergence of drug resistance, including: the orderings of resistance-conferring mutations in bacteria and the impact of imperfect drug penetration in cancer.

AbstractA general multi-type population model is considered, where individuals live and reproduce according to their age and type, but also under the influence of the size and composition of the entire population. We describe the dynamics of the population as a measure-valued process and obtain its asymptotics as the population grows with the environmental carrying capacity. Thus, a deterministic approximation is given, in the form of a law of large numbers, as well as a central limit theorem. This general framework is then adapted to model sexual reproduction, with a special section on serial monogamic mating systems.

Law Although EU law has established a general framework concerning the fight against discriminations on the grounds of religion (namely as far as equal treatment in employment and occupation is concerned), the related ECJ case law is not very rich. This article tracks and evaluates the impact of the ECHR case law devoted to the freedom of religion on the interpretation and application of EU law concerning religion discriminations. It argues that the ECHR case law may contribute to identify the notion of ‘religion' which is relevant for EU law, while several arguments may be put forward against the application of the Strasbourg approach to the balancing between the right to quality based on religion and others human rights into the EU legal order.

Understanding the evolutionary origin of the nucleus and its compartmentalized architecture provides a huge but, as expected, greatly rewarding challenge in the post-genomic era. We start this chapter with a survey of current hypotheses on the evolutionary origin of the cell nucleus. Thereafter, we provide an overview of evolutionarily conserved features of chromatin organization and arrangements, as well as topographical aspects of DNA replication and transcription, followed by a brief introduction of current models of nuclear architecture. In addition to features which may possibly apply to all eukaryotes, the evolutionary plasticity of higher-order nuclear organization is reflected by cell-type- and species-specific features, by the ability of nuclear architecture to adapt to specific environmental demands, as well as by the impact of aberrant nuclear organization on senescence and human disease. We conclude this chapter with a reflection on the necessity of interdisciplinary research strategies to map epigenomes in space and time.

O objetivo deste artigo consiste em analisar, com base no levantamento de artigos e bibliografias da área, os aspectos evolutivos e o papel da comunicação em marketing com o surgimento das novas mídias. Foram estudados conceitos como Marketing, Mix de Marketing, promoção/comunicação, mídia de massa e novas mídias, além do impacto causado pela tecnologia. A análise dessas informações permitiu traçar um quadro geral com as principais características de ambas as categorias de mídias e os fatores que contribuíram para essa evolução, além de avaliar os desafios para a comunicação em Marketing. As novas mídias exigiram uma mudança no papel e no pensamento do Marketing, já que a comunicação impessoal cedeu espaço para a interatividade. E cabe aqui destacar que a área de Marketing está se esforçando para acompanhar essas mudanças.  The purpose of this article is to analyze, based on the gathering of articles and bibliographies of the area, the evolutive aspects and the role of communication in marketing with the emergence of new media. Concepts such as Marketing, Marketing Mix, promotion/ communication, mass media and new media were studied, as well as the impact caused by technology. The analysis of this information allowed to chart a general framework with the main characteristics of both categories of media and the factors that contributed to this evolution, besides evaluating the challenges for communication in Marketing. The new media required a change in the role and thinking of Marketing, since impersonal communication gave way to interactivity. And it should be noted here that the Marketing area is striving to keep up with these changes.

AbstractBackgroundDNA methylation profiling of peripheral blood leukocytes has many research applications, and characterizing the changes in DNA methylation of specific white blood cell types between newborn and adult could add insight into the maturation of the immune system. As a consequence of developmental changes, DNA methylation profiles derived from adult white blood cells are poor references for prediction of cord blood cell types from DNA methylation data. We thus examined cell-type specific differences in DNA methylation in leukocyte subsets between cord and adult blood, and assessed the impact of these differences on prediction of cell types in cord blood.ResultsThough all cell types showed differences between cord and adult blood, some specific patterns stood out that reflected how the immune system changes after birth. In cord blood, lymphoid cells showed less variability than in adult, potentially demonstrating their naïve status. In fact, cord CD4 and CD8 T cells were so similar that genetic effects on DNA methylation were greater than cell type effects in our analysis, and CD8 T cell frequencies remained difficult to predict, even after optimizing the library used for cord blood composition estimation. Myeloid cells showed fewer changes between cord and adult and also less variability, with monocytes showing the fewest sites of DNA methylation change between cord and adult. Finally, including nucleated red blood cells in the reference library was necessary for accurate cell type predictions in cord blood.ConclusionChanges in DNA methylation with age were highly cell type specific, and those differences paralleled what is known about the maturation of the postnatal immune system.

The term e learning indicates products that differ very much both in services supplied and in design. E learning platforms do not necessarily involve networking as a fundamental component. However, networking is important both to ease access to course material and to support interaction among users. Networking should be exploited to allow remote access to students who cannot be present at lessons, to allow asynchronous learning whenever students have time, to supply users with tools for cooperative learning regardless of their physical location. The spread of wireless networking technologies and their standardization will lead to innovations in all three of these aspects. This chapter focuses on the services whose deployment computer networks make possible in order to boost interactivity, cooperation and involvement in learning, with specific attention to ubiquitous learning and for the impact of wireless technologies on the general framework.

The array of whiskers on the snout provides rodents with tactile sensory information relating to the size, shape and texture of objects in their immediate environment. Rodents can use their whiskers to detect stimuli, distinguish textures, locate objects and navigate. Important aspects of whisker sensation are thought to result from neuronal computations in the whisker somatosensory cortex (wS1). Each whisker is individually represented in the somatotopic map of wS1 by an anatomical unit named a ‘barrel’ (hence also called barrel cortex). This allows precise investigation of sensory processing in the context of a well-defined map. Here, we first review the signaling pathways from the whiskers to wS1, and then discuss current understanding of the various types of excitatory and inhibitory neurons present within wS1. Different classes of cells can be defined according to anatomical, electrophysiological and molecular features. The synaptic connectivity of neurons within local wS1 microcircuits, as well as their long-range interactions and the impact of neuromodulators, are beginning to be understood. Recent technological progress has allowed cell-type-specific connectivity to be related to cell-type-specific activity during whisker-related behaviors. An important goal for future research is to obtain a causal and mechanistic understanding of how selected aspects of tactile sensory information are processed by specific types of neurons in the synaptically connected neuronal networks of wS1 and signaled to downstream brain areas, thus contributing to sensory-guided decision-making.
