AbstractDaphnia and their parasites have emerged as a model system for understanding the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases. Two of the most commonly studied Daphnia parasites are the bacterium Pasteuria ramosa and the fungus Metschnikowia bicuspidata. In addition to being the focus of numerous field studies, these two parasites have been used in many laboratory experiments. However, there is little information in the scientific literature about how the conditions under which these parasites are stored influence the infectivity and yield of transmission stages (“spores”). This is problematic because such information is critical for experiment design and data interpretation. We tested the influence of storage length (eight treatments ranging from 1 day to 1 year) and temperature (−20°C (freezer) vs. 4°C (refrigerator)) on spore infectivity and yield. We found that Pasteuria spores survived well at both −20°C and 4°C, and remained infective even after storage for one year. However, Pasteuria spore yields dropped over time, particularly at 4°C. In contrast, Metschnikowia spores were killed within days at −20°C. At 4°C, Metschnikowia infectivity declined steadily over a period of two months and, by four months, spores were no longer infective. Spore yield from Metschnikowia-infected hosts was not significantly impacted by storage length, but trended downwards.Scientists working with Pasteuria should be aware that spore yield declines during storage, particularly in the refrigerator. Scientists working with Metschnikowia should be aware that it is killed by freezer storage and that, even if it is stored in the refrigerator, infectivity declines within a few months. These results might have implications for parasite distributions in the field; for example, the high sensitivity of Metschnikowia to freezing might help explain why it tends to be more common in deep lakes than in ponds or rock pools.

SummaryIt is difficult to undertake field studies with non marketed psychotropic drugs because of two apparently contradictory conditions : on the one hand, the methodology has to be rigorously controlled, and on the other hand, such studies have to be carried out in their future environment by general practitioners (GPs). Bearing in mind the lack of training and experience regarding this kind of approach, the author adopted a discussion group method according to the techniques developed by M. Balint. The study group comprised five GPs, a clinical pharmacology expert and a doctor from the pharmaceutical laboratory which had developed the test drug. These persons met on a monthly basis over a one year period. In the present paper, the author indicates the benefits of such a methodology, based on six years’ experience and several trials, with special emphasis placed on the pedagogical aspects.

This paper is dedicated to the topical problem of examining permafrost’s state and the processes of its geocryological changes by means of geophysical methods. To monitor the cryolithozone, we proposed and scientifically substantiated a new technique of pulsed electromagnetic cross-well sounding. Based on the vector finite-element method, we created a mathematical model of the cross-well sounding process with a pulsed source in a three-dimensional spatially heterogeneous medium. A high-performance parallel computing algorithm was developed and verified. Through realistic geoelectric models of permafrost with a talik under a highway, constructed following the results of electrotomography field data interpretation, we numerically simulated the pulsed sounding on the computing resources of the Siberian Supercomputer Center of SB RAS. The simulation results suggest the proposed system of pulsed electromagnetic cross-well monitoring to be characterized by a high sensitivity to the presence and dimensions of the talik. The devised approach can be oriented to addressing a wide range of issues related to monitoring permafrost rocks under civil and industrial facilities, buildings, and constructions.

Utilizing airflow therapy, Schwartz (1976) has claimed an 89% success rate with stutterers following treatment and an 83% success rate at one year follow-up. Such claims have yet to be documented in the scientific literature. The purposes of this study were: (a) to investigate the effectiveness of a modified version of airflow therapy; (b) to examine the relative importance of its two main components—passive airflow and elongation of the first vowel spoken. The speech of two adult male stutterers with a lengthy history of stuttering, was assessed with spontaneous speaking and reading tasks. Results indicated marked improvement in both subjects' speech on the reading task was maintained at follow-up 10 weeks later. For spontaneous speech, results were generally weaker and less durable. Effects of the two treatment components were cumulative and did not allow determination of any differential effectiveness between components. Implications of these findings were considered and directions for future research discussed.

The article aims to study how children participated in the festive culture of Mordovian immigrants in Siberia. Mordva had been moving here from Mordovia, Chuvashia, Samara, and Penza from the second half of the XIX century to the 1970s. The article is based on the author's field studies and scientific literature. It describes the most important religious holidays of the Mordovian immigrants. It was typical of the festive culture of the Mordovian peasantry that children and youth participated in religious and festive acts. In most adult rites, children were often involved as spectators. They also assisted in the preparation of rites, for example, collecting food, firewood, unnecessary objects for Christmas and Maslenitsa fires. Apart from that, children informed the local population about upcoming ceremonies. Sometimes, children and adolescents were endowed with an independent ritual role, particularly when knocking on doors on Easter, Christmas, and New Year. Their presence was considered a magical means to achieve certain goals. The author concludes that the Mordovian population aimed to preserve their religious and festive culture in the new territory. In Siberia, the immigrants celebrated the same holidays as in their original territories.

(1) Background: Oronasal communication is described in the scientific literature as a common complication that occurs after a cleft palate surgery. In some cases, it can also be a consequence of oral surgery procedures; the main problem of this type of rare accident is related to the correct healing process and treatment option. (2) Case report: A patient with oronasal communication caused by an unsuccessful attempt of a superior canine odontectomy presented at the Emergency Department of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Hospital, Timișoara. The case management is described from the first consult to one-year follow-up. We consider that this pathology was optimally treated surgically, and the results are more than satisfactory, taking into consideration the high rates of recurrence. (3) Conclusion: This case report can be a useful to a general dentist who is trying to decide whether to perform the canine odontectomy or refer to a specialist surgeon due to the accidents and complications of this procedure.

Introduction/Objective. Clinical risk stratification of patients hospitalized due to acute heart failure (AHF) applying B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), troponin I (TnI), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) biochemical markers can contribute to early diagnosis of AHF and lower mortality rates. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of biomarkers (BNP, TnI, and hsCRP) and co-morbidities concerning one-year mortality in patients with AHF. Methods. Clinical group comprised 124 consecutive unselected patients, age 60?80 years, treated at the Coronary Care Unit of the Niska Banja Institute, Nis. The patients were monitored for one year after the discharge. During the first 24 hours after admission, BNP, TnI, and hsCRP were measured in fasting serum. Results. Total one-year mortality was 29.8%. The levels of serum BNP were significantly higher in the group of non-survivors compared to the group of survivors (1353.8 ?} 507.8 vs. 718.4 ?} 387.6 pg/mL, p < 0.001). We identified several clinical and biochemical prognostic risk factors by univariate and multivariate analysis. Independent predictors of one-year mortality were the following: BNP, TnI, depression, hypotension, chronic renal failure, ejection fraction, and right-ventricle systolic pressure. Conclusion. The presence of BNP and TnI biomarkers and several co-morbidities such as depression or chronic renal failure have significant influence on one-year mortality in patients with AHF.

AbstractCystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato is one of the most important helminth zoonoses in the world; it affects both humans and livestock. The disease is endemic in Argentina and highly endemic in the province of Neuquén. Considerable genetic and phenotypic variation has been demonstrated in E. granulosus, and ten different genotypes (G1–G10) have been identified using molecular tools. Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato may be considered a species complex, comprised of E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1–G3), E. equinus (G4), E. ortleppi (G5) and E. canadensis (G6–G10). In endemic areas, the characterization of cystic echinococcosis molecular epidemiology is important in order to apply adequate control strategies. A cut-off value for larval large hook total length to distinguish E. granulosus sensu stricto isolates from those produced by other species of the complex was defined for the first time. Overall, 1780 larval hooks of 36 isolates obtained from sheep (n= 11, G1), goats (n= 10, G6), cattle (n= 5, G6) and pigs (n= 10, G7) were analysed. Validation against molecular genotyping as gold standard was carried out using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The optimum cut-off value was defined as 26.5 μm. The proposed method showed high sensitivity (97.8%) and specificity (91.1%). Since in most endemic regions the molecular epidemiology of echinococcosis includes the coexistence of the widely distributed E. granulosus sensu stricto G1 strain and other species of the complex, this technique could be useful as a quick and economical tool for epidemiological and surveillance field studies, when fertile cysts are present.

Abstract. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of water vapor on the reaction of nitric oxide with ozone in a chemiluminescence instrument used for fast response and high sensitivity detection of atmospheric ozone. Water vapor was introduced into a constant level ozone standard and both ozone and water vapor signals were recorded at 10 Hz. The presence of water vapor was found to reduce, i.e. quench the ozone signal. A correction factor was determined to be 4.15 ± 0.14 × 10−3, which corresponds to a 4.15% increase in the measured ozone signal per 10 mmol mol−1 co-sampled water vapor. An ozone-inert water vapor permeable membrane (Nafion dryer) was installed in the sampling line and was shown to remove the bulk of the water vapor mole fraction in the sample air. At water vapor mole fractions above 25 mmol mol−1, the Nafion dryer removed over 75% of the water vapor in the sample. This reduced the ozone signal correction from over 11% to less than 2.5%. The Nafion dryer was highly effective at reducing the fast fluctuations of the water vapor signal (more than 97%) while leaving the ozone signal unaffected, which is a crucial improvement for minimizing the interference of water vapor fluxes on the ozone flux determination by the eddy covariance technique.

Introduction: Myocardial injury is common after out-of-hospital-cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, little is known about the role of early serial hs-TnT in patients with OHCA for identifying myocardial injury, and whether the prevalence and severity of injury differs according to cardiac (CV) vs noncardiac (non-CV) cause of OHCA. Hypothesis: Early hs-TnT will demonstrate high rates of myocardial injury after OHCA regardless of etiology. However, in the first 6 hours after OHCA the extent of hs-TnT elevation and rate of rise will be higher in patients with CV vs non-CV etiology. Methods: Multicenter retrospective study including OHCA patients presenting from 4/1/2018 to 4/1/2019. Hs-TnT was drawn as part of routine clinical care. Results: Baseline hs-TnT was measured in 120 patients after OHCA due to CV (n=51) and non-CV (n=69) etiologies, with subsequent serial hs-TnT values at 1hr, 3hrs, and 6hrs. Hs-TnT was greater than the 99 th percentile in 97% (115/120) of patients and myocardial injury (hs-TnT> 52ng/L) was detected in 88% (105/120) of patients (no difference between CV vs non-CV etiology). Median hs-TnT values were compared between CV and non-CV etiologies of OHCA identifying no difference in hs-TnT at baseline (Figure: 54 [IQR 18-134] vs. 41 [IQR 19-100]; p=0.357) but significantly higher hs-TnT in patients with CV etiology at 1hr (159 [IQR 80-392] vs 93 [IQR 42-247]; p=0.049), 3hrs (400 [IQR 168-1005] vs 151 [IQR 75-401] p=0.009), and 6hrs (746 [IQR 248-1965] vs 251 [IQR 75-580]; p=0.001). Additionally, hs-TnT rise from baseline was present in both CV and non-CV etiologies but was significantly higher in patients with CV etiology (p = 0.005). Conclusions: As identified by hs-TnT, myocardial injury was prevalent in patients with both CV and non-CV cause of OHCA. Baseline hs-TnT was no different in patients with CV vs non-CV cause, however, over the first 6 hours both absolute value and rate of hs-TnT rise were significantly higher for patients with CV vs non-CV etiology of OHCA.
