AbstractOBJECTIVEHuman hair changes with age: fibre diameter and density decrease, hair growth slows and shedding increases. This series of controlled studies examined the effect on hair growth parameters of a new leave-on hair treatment (LOT) formulated with DynagenTM(containing hydrolysed yeast protein) and zinc salts.METHODSHair growth data were collected from healthy women aged 18–65 years. The LOT’s effect on hair growth was measured in a randomized double-blind study and in hair samples; its effect on follicle-cell proliferation was assessed by quantifying Ki67 expression in scalp biopsies. The LOT’s effect on plucking force was determined in anex vivomodel. Dynagen’s effect on the expression of the tight-junction marker claudin-1 was analysed in cultured follicles. The effect on protease activity of zinc salts used in the LOT was examinedin vitro.RESULTSHair growth rate decreased with increasing subject age. The LOT significantly increased hair growth rate, fibre diameter, bundle cross-sectional area, Ki67 expression and the plucking force required to remove hair. Dynagen significantly increased claudin-1 expression in cultured follicles. Protease activity was reduced by zinc salts.CONCLUSIONThe Dynagen-based LOT increases hair-fibre diameter, strengthens the follicular root structure and increases hair growth rate.

Background Assessment of physiological states by measuring biomarkers, such as cortisol, has significantly contributed to the monitoring of health, welfare and management of animals. Immunoreactive cortisol in hair (hC) has been used widely for deciphering ‘stressful’ past-events in various wild and captive animals. However, no such studies have been done in long-lived mammals. Methods In this first exploratory study in elephants, we assessed (i) tail-hair growth rate (TGR) and (ii) hC levels in tail-hair samples from six captive Asian elephants from two zoos in Japan for comparing hC levels with zoo-keepers’ records of distinct biological events over a c.0.5–2.0-year period. Tail-hair samples were cut into segments (based on monthly growth rate), pulverized or minced and a validated cortisol enzyme-immunoassay employed to measure hC levels. Results When the hC levels of all individuals were compared with the keepers’ records, a posteriori, most of the high hC levels were found to be associated with ‘stressful’ or distinct behavioural events such as pathological (anaemia, colic infection, skin infection, oral sores), psychosocial (reluctance in entering the enclosure, presence of a calf) and husbandry practice-related (contact trials/ space sharing) conditions, indicating that tail-hair indeed can be a potential ‘retrospective’ calendar of physiological health of an animal. Conclusions Our observations open up the possibility of using the tail-hair as an alternative matrix to reconstruct the physiological history of elephants.

Deer antlers are the only mammalian appendage capable of regeneration. We aimed to investigate the effect of red deer antler extract in regulating hair growth, using a mouse model. The backs of male mice were shaved at eight weeks of age. Crude aqueous extracts of deer antler were prepared at either 4°C or 100°C and injected subcutaneously to two separate groups of mice (n=9) at 1 mL/day for 10 consecutive days, with water as a vehicle control group. The mice skin quantitative hair growth parameters were measured and 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine was used to identify label-retaining cells. We found that, in both the 4°C and the 100°C deer antler aqueous extract-injection groups, the anagen phase was extended, while the number of BrdU-incorporated cells was dramatically increased. These results indicate that deer antler aqueous extract promotes hair growth by extending the anagen phase and regulating cell proliferation in the hair follicle region.

ABSTRACT Studies on age and growth of fish populations have direct application in fisheries and contribute for policies of conservation. Our aim was update information on the Micropogonias furnieri growth parameters based on sagittae otoliths annulis readings, and we expected that the studied population from Southeast Brazil can reach more longevity than the reported in the available literature. We examined 286 individuals between August-2010 and July-2011 from Ubatuba Bay, SP. The Total Length ranged 200-480 mm. The determined growth parameters were: Males, L∞ =523.4mm, k = 0.05×year-1, t0 = -8.78 year; Females L∞ = 573.5mm, k = 0.06 × year-1, t0 = -7.49 year. The MI and % of edge type evidenced the formation of one ring per year during autumn/winter, coinciding with low temperature and low growth rate. These results differed from those reported for the Vazzoler’s Population I (summer), and we detected higher longevity (45-48 years) as compared with the recorded in the available information.

ABSTRACT The growth characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes inoculated onto frozen foods (corn, green peas, crabmeat, and shrimp) and thawed by being stored at 4, 8, 12, and 20°C were investigated. The growth parameters, lag-phase duration (LPD) and exponential growth rate (EGR), were determined by using a two-phase linear growth model as a primary model and a square root model for EGR and a quadratic model for LPD as secondary models, based on the growth data. The EGR model predictions were compared with growth rates obtained from the USDA Pathogen Modeling Program, calculated with similar pH, salt percentage, and NaNO2 parameters, at all storage temperatures. The results showed that L. monocytogenes grew well in all food types, with the growth rate increasing with storage temperature. Predicted EGRs for all food types demonstrated the significance of storage temperature and similar growth rates among four food types. The predicted EGRs showed slightly slower rate compared with the values from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Pathogen Modeling Program. LPD could not be accurately predicted, possibly because there were not enough sampling points. These data established by using real food samples demonstrated that L. monocytogenes can initiate growth without a prolonged lag phase even at refrigeration temperature (4°C), and the predictive models derived from this study can be useful for developing proper handling guidelines for thawed frozen foods during production and storage.

Movement, growth and natural mortality rate of the red spot king prawn, Penaeus longistylus, occurring in waters of the Great Barrier Reef off Townsville, Queensland, were investigated in a series of tagging experiments. Adult P. longistylus did not migrate after leaving nursery areas. Their growth rate was slower than that of the conspecific species P. plebejus, and significant inter-annual variation in growth parameters was observed. The natural mortality rate, assessed by sequential tagging experiments that eliminated the possibility of confounding with the rate of fishing mortality, was estimated to be 0.072 (week-1).

AbstractThe application of secondary temperature models on growth rates of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, the much studied probiotic bacterium, is investigated. Growth parameters resulting from a primary fitting were modelled against temperature using the following models: Hinshelwood model (H), Ratkowsky extended model (RTK2), Zwietering model (ZWT), and cardinal temperature model with inflection (CTMI). As experienced by other authors, the RTK2, ZWT, and CTMI models provided the best statistical indices related to fitting the experimental data. Moreover, with the biological background, the following cardinal temperatures of L. rhamnosus GG resulted from the study by the model application: t min = 2.7°C, t opt = 44.4°C, t max = 52.0°C. The growth rate of the strain under study at optimal temperature was 0.88 log10(CFU mL−1 h−1).

This study assessed the efficacy of tin and Polyethylenglycol (PEG-3) tallow aminopropylamine in different concentrations on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilms to establish a new screening process for different antimicrobial agents and to gain more information on the antibacterial effects of these agents on cariogenic biofilms. Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) was used to determine differences in two growth parameters: lag time and growth rate; additionally, reduction in active biofilms was calculated. Experimental mouth rinses with 400 and 800 ppm tin derived from stannous fluoride (SnF2) revealed results (43.4 and 49.9% active biofilm reduction, respectively) similar to meridol mouth rinse (400 ppm tin combined with 1,567 ppm PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine; 55.3% active biofilm reduction) (p > 0.05), while no growth of S. mutans biofilms was detected during 72 h for samples treated with an experimental rinse containing 1,600 ppm tin (100% active biofilm reduction). Only the highest concentration (12,536 ppm) of rinses containing PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine derived from amine fluoride (AmF) revealed comparable results to meridol (57.5% reduction in active biofilm). Lower concentrations of PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine showed reductions of 16.9% for 3,134 ppm and 33.5% for 6,268 ppm. Maximum growth rate was significantly lower for all the samples containing SnF2 than for the samples containing control biofilms (p < 0.05); no differences were found between the control and all the PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine (p > 0.05). The growth parameters showed high reproducibility rates within the treated groups of biofilms and for the controls; thus, the screening method provided reliable results.

Abstract The main goal of this study was to investigate the cardioprotective properties in terms of effects on cardiodynamics of perfluorocarbon emulsion in ex vivo-induced ischemic-reperfusion injury of an isolated rat heart. The first part of the study aims to determine the dose of 10% perfluoroemulsion (PFT) that will show the best cardioprotective effect in rats on ex vivo-induced ischemic / reperfusion injury of an isolated rat heart. Depending on whether the animals received saline or PFT, the animals were divided into a control or experimental group, and depending on the application of a dose (8, 12, 16 ml / kg body weight) of saline or PFT. At a dose of 8 ml / kg, the results indicate statistically significantly lower values ​​of the maximum pressure growth rate in the group treated with 10% PFT compared to the control group treated with saline at R5 and R25 points. At a dose of 12 ml / kg, the maximum left ventricular pressure growth rate differed statistically significantly in the PFT group, ie there was an increase in this parameter at points R25 and R30, and the minimum left ventricular pressure growth rate in R15-R30 compared to saline-treated group. At a dose of 16 ml / kg, PFT also had a statistically significant effect on the change in cardiodynamic parameters in an isolated rat heart organ. Based on all the above, we can conclude that Peftoran administered immediately before ischemia (1 hour) has less positive effects on myocardial function in a model of an isolated rat heart compared to earlier administration (10 and 20 hours). Also, the effects of 10% peftoran solution are more pronounced if there is a longer period of time from application to ischemia, ie immediate application of peftoran before ischemia (1 hour) gave the weakest effects on the change of cardiodynamics of isolated rat heart.
