A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, oval-shaped, non-motile bacterium with no flagella, designated strain SCR17T, was isolated from a shrimp gill habitat in Tangyin hydrothermal field of Okinawa Trough. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SCR17T formed a lineage within the family ‘ Rhodobacteraceae ’, and shared 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 93.2–96.2 % to the related genera Aquicoccus and Roseivivax . Strain SCR17T was able to grow with 0–14 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 9–10 %). The sole respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The major polar lipids of strain SCR17T comprised phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), an unidentified aminolipid (AL), an unidentified phospholipid (PL) and an unidentified lipid (L). The predominant fatty acids (more than 10 % of the total fatty acids) were C18 : 1ω7c or/and C18 : 1ω6c, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c . The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SCR17T was 67.7 mol%. Based on polyphasic taxonomic analyses, strain SCR17T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus of the family ‘ Rhodobacteraceae ’, for which the name Carideicomes alvinocaridis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Carideicomes alvinocaridis is SCR17T (=JCM 33426T=MCCC 1K03732T). The discovery of a novel host-associated bacterium in hydrothermal fields provides an opportunity for the study of host–bacterial symbiosis in extreme environments.

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and oval-shaped bacterial strain with a flagellum, designated GS-10T, was isolated from mangrove wetland sediment. GS-10T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C), in the pH range of 5.0–11.0 (optimum, 6.0–8.0) and under various NaCl concentrations from 1 to 11 % (w/v) (optimum, 5–6 %). The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10, and the predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were summed feature 4 (C17 : 1iso I/anteiso B) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 63.71 %. On the basis of the results from comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, GS-10T represents a member of the family Rhodobacteraceae and had the highest sequence similarity to Thalassobius gelatinovorus CECT 4357T (97.47 %), followed by Lutimaribacter pacificus W11-2BT (97.03 %), Marivita cryptomonadis CL-SK44T (96.83 %), Thalassobius autumnalis CECT 5118T (96.75 %) and Thalassobius mediterraneus CECT 5383T (96.68 %). Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) and whole genome sequences revealed that GS-10T clustered with species within the genus Thalassobius . The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the average amino acid identity (AAI) values were calculated from complete genome sequences and indicated that GS-10T represented a novel species of the genus Thalassobius , and the name Thalassobius mangrovi sp. nov. is proposed for this species. The type strain of Thalassobius mangrovi is GS-10T (=MCCC 1K03624T=KCTC 82131T).

A Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic and short rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain S3B03T, was isolated from the sediment of the northern Okinawa Trough. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain S3B03T belonged to the genus Loktanella (family Rhodobacteraceae ) and showed the highest sequence similarity with Loktanella litorea KCTC 23883T (96.16 %) and 92.99–95.90 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to other members of the genus Loktanella . Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 2–5 % (w/v) NaCl at pH 7.0–8.0 and 28–32 °C. Ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain S3B03T was 57.6 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic analysis, strain S3B03T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Loktanella , for which the name Loktanella sediminum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S3B03T ( = JCM 30120T = DSM 28715T = MCCC 1K00257T).

A strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, ovoid- and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain GH1-50T, was isolated from a tidal mudflat sample collected from Dongmak seashore on Gangwha Island, Republic of Korea. The organism showed growth at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 7–8 (optimum, pH 7) and 2–6  % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5 %). The pufLM genes were present but bacteriochlorophyll a was not detected. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. The polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1  ω7c, C18 : 1  ω7c 11-methyl and C18 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that the isolate belonged to the family Rhodobacteraceae and was loosely associated with members of the recognized genera. The closest relative was the type strain of Pseudoruegeria marinistellae (96.8 % similarity) followed by Boseongicola aestuarii (96.4 %). Other members of the family shared 16S rRNA gene similarity values below 96.0 % to the novel isolate. The DNA G+C content calculated from the draft genome sequence was 64.0 %. The average amino acid identity, average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between genome sequences of strain GH1-50T and all the type strains of the recognized taxa compared were <70.0, <84.1 and <20.5 %, respectively. Based on data obtained by a polyphasic approach, strain GH1-50T (=KCTC 72224T=NBRC 113929T) represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Kangsaoukella pontilimi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

Two Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated as HMF7605T and HMF7616T, were isolated from birch tree, in Yong-in, Republic of Korea. Strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 95.9 and 97.5 % to Adhaeribacter swui 17mud1-7T, 97.9 % between themselves. The values of average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA–DNA hybridization between strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T were 77.6 and 22.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two strains revealed that they belonged to the genus Adhaeribacter within the family Hymenobacteraceae . The predominant fatty acids of both strains were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c), C16 : 1  ω5c and summed feature 4 (comprising iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The both strains contained menaquinone-7 as the only isoprenoid quinone. The major polar lipid profiles of the two strains were similar with phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid, one unidentified glycolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains HMF7605T and HMF7616T were 42.0 and 42.8 mol%, respectively. Based on the results of the phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic investigation, two novel species, Adhaeribacter arboris sp. nov. and Adhaeribacter pallidiroseus sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are HMF7605T (=KCTC 62465T=NBRC 113228T) and HMF7616T (=KCTC 62466T=NBRC 113229T), respectively.

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped motile bacterium with peritrichous flagella, designated strain LZB041T, was isolated from offshore surface seawater of the East China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LZB041T formed a lineage within the family ‘ Aurantimonadaceae ’ that was distinct from the most closely related genera Aurantimonas (96.0–96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Aureimonas (94.5–96.0 %). Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 1–7 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7.0–8.0 and at 28–37 °C. Ubiquinone-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total fatty acids) were C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8) and cyclo-C19 : 0ω8c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, one unknown aminolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown polar lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain LZB041T was 71.3 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic analysis, strain LZB041T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the class Alphaproteobacteria , for which the name Jiella aquimaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is LZB041T ( = JCM 30119T = MCCC 1K00255T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, non-gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive, yellow-pigmented rod, designated A11T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Halichondria oshoro, collected on the coastline of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A11T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were members of the genera Muricauda , Flagellimonas and Croceitalea (94.4–94.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The only polar lipid detected in strain A11T was phosphatidylethanolamine. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (30.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (26.7 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.4 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (7.3 %). The DNA G+C content of strain A11T was 41.7 mol% and its major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of combined data from phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain A11T represents a novel genus and species within the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Spongiibacterium flavum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is A11T ( = KCTC 22665T = DSM 22638T). Emended descriptions of the genera Croceitalea and Flagellimonas are also given.

Three Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, non-pigmented, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strains, SP32T ( = SLM-1T), SR68 ( = SLM-3) and SP95 ( = SLM-2), were isolated from two water samples of a cold-water lake in Xinjiang province, China. Growth was observed at 4–25 °C and pH 6.0–9.0, and optimum growth occurred at 18–20 °C and at pH 7.0–7.5. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that these isolates belonged to the family Rhodobacteraceae , but formed an evolutionary lineage distinct from other species of this family with validly published names. Strain SP32T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (96.7 %) to Rhodobacter veldkampii ATCC 35703T, and the similarity to members of the genera Defluviimonas , Haematobacter and Pseudorhodobacter was respectively 95.8–96.4, 96.0–96.1 and 95.3–96.1 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SP32T was 67.6 mol%. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c) and11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. Phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified polar lipid were the main polar lipids. Ubiquinone 10 (Q-10) was the sole respiratory quinone. Strain SP32T did not produce photosynthetic pigments and did not contain the gene pufM, by which it differed from the phototrophic species of the family Rhodobacteraceae . Based on its distinct phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties, strain SP32T represents a novel species in a novel genus within the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which we propose the name Frigidibacter albus gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Frigidibacter albus is strain SP32T ( = SLM-1T = CGMCC 1.13995T = NBRC 109671T).

A novel, strictly aerobic, red-pigmented, Gram-reaction-negative bacterium, designated strain R9-9T, was isolated from tundra soil collected near Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard Archipelago, Norway (78° N). The novel strain was subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. It grew optimally at 20–22 °C and at pH 7.0. Flexirubin-type pigments were absent. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain R9-9T represents a distinct phyletic line that reflects a novel generic status within the family Cytophagaceae . The novel strain showed relatively low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (<88.0 %) to members of established genera. Strain R9-9T contained summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 1ω5c as its major cellular fatty acids, phosphatidylethanolamine as its main polar lipid, and MK-7 as its major respiratory quinone. The genomic DNA G+C content was 56.1 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain R9-9T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus in the family Cytophagaceae , for which the name Huanghella arctica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R9-9T ( = CCTCC AB 2010418T = NRRL B-59750T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain GY12T, was isolated from a tidal flat of South Korea. Cells were moderately halotolerant, catalase- and oxidase-positive rods with gliding motility, and were devoid of flagella. Growth of strain GY12T was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum 25–30 °C), pH 6.0–8.5 (optimum pH 7.0–7.5) and with 1–5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1–2 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The polar lipids consisted almost entirely of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 34.8 mol% and the only respiratory quinone detected was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). Strain GY12T was most closely related to the genera Gaetbulibacter , Flaviramulus , Mariniflexile and Tamlana with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 94–97 %, but phylogenetic inferences based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed phyletic lineages distinct from these genera within the family Flavobacteriaceae . On the basis of phenotypic and molecular features, strain GY12T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Litoribaculum gwangyangense gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is GY12T ( = KACC 16441T = JCM 18325T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated ZYF650T, was isolated from the hadal seawater (9600 m) of the Mariana Trench. Results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that ZYF650T formed a lineage within the family Alteromonadaceae that was distinct from the most closely related species Marinobacter mobilis and Marinobacter nitratireducens with 16S rRNA gene sequences similarities of 98.0 and 97.7 %, respectively. Strain ZYF650T showed average nucleotide identity values of 75.7 % with Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus , 73.3 % with Marinobacter mobilis and 79.3 % with Marinobacter nitratireducens , and DNA–DNAhybridization values of 21.5, 21.3 and 22.0 % with M. hydrocarbonoclasticus , M. mobilis and M. nitratireducens , respectively, which were lower than the threshold for species delineation. Strain ZYF650T grew with 0–14 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 7–8 %) at a temperature range of 10–45 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and pH 6.0–9.5 (optimum, pH 7.0–8.0). The sole respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-9 (Q-9). The polar lipids in ZYF650T comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified polar lipids, two unidentified aminolipids and two phospholipids. The predominant fatty acids (more than 10 % of total fatty acids) were C18 : 1 ω9c (21.9 %), C16 : 0 (21.7 %), C12 : 0 3-OH (14.0 %), C16 : 1 ω9c (13.2 %) and C12 : 0 (12.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain ZYF650T was 55.6 %. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic analysis, strain ZY650T is considered to represent a novel specie of the genus Marinobacter in the family Alteromonadaceae , for which the name Marinobacter salinexigens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZYF650T (=JCM 33013T=MCCC 1K03552T).
