On the basis of 16S rRNA, rpoB, gyrB and pycA gene sequence analyses, characterization of biochemical features and other phenotypic traits and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) fingerprinting, it was ascertained that strains Bacillus aerius MTCC 7303T, Bacillus aerophilus MTCC 7304T and Bacillus stratosphericus MTCC 7305T do not conform to the descriptions of the type strains of the respective species. Strains MTCC 7303T and MTCC 7304T were indistinguishable from Bacillus altitudinis DSM 21631T, while strain MTCC 7305T should be classified as a representative of a Proteus sp. Our attempts to find other deposits of the type strains of these species were unsuccessful. Therefore, the results support the Request for an Opinion on the status of the species Bacillus aerophilus and Bacillus stratosphericus by Branquinho et al. [Branquinho, R., Klein, G., Kämpfer, P. & Peixe, L. V. (2015). Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 65, 1101]. It is also proposed that the Judicial Commission should place the name Bacillus aerius on the list of rejected names if a suitable replacement type strain cannot be found or a neotype is not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request (Rule 18c).

ABSTRACT Lotus species are forage legumes with potential as pastures in low-fertility and environmentally constrained soils, owing to their high persistence and yield under those conditions. The aim of this work was the characterization of phenetic and genetic diversity of salt-tolerant bacteria able to establish efficient symbiosis with Lotus spp. A total of 180 isolates able to nodulate Lotus corniculatus and Lotus tenuis from two locations in Granada, Spain, were characterized. Molecular identification of the isolates was performed by repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR (REP-PCR) and 16S rRNA, atpD, and recA gene sequence analyses, showing the presence of bacteria related to different species of the genus Mesorhizobium: Mesorhizobium tarimense/Mesorhizobium tianshanense, Mesorhizobium chacoense/Mesorhizobium albiziae, and the recently described species, Mesorhizobium alhagi. No Mesorhizobium loti-like bacteria were found, although most isolates carried nodC and nifH symbiotic genes closely related to those of M. loti, considered the type species of bacteria nodulating Lotus, and other Lotus rhizobia. A significant portion of the isolates showed both high salt tolerance and good symbiotic performance with L. corniculatus, and many behaved like salt-dependent bacteria, showing faster growth and better symbiotic performance when media were supplemented with Na or Ca salts.

During a recent study assessing the diversity of the species Bacillus licheniformis, it became apparent that the type strain of Bacillus aerius was not available from any established culture collection or from the authors who originally described it. Other authors have reported similar findings when trying to obtain the strain (Lai et al., 2014), therefore, this species cannot currently be included in any further scientific studies. It is proposed that, if suitable replacements for type strains are not found or neotype strains are not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request for an Opinion, the Judicial Commission of the International Committee of Systematics of Prokaryotes place the name B. aerius on the list of rejected names.

A major clade of new yeast taxa from the digestive tract of basidiocarp-feeding beetles is recognized based on rRNA gene sequence analyses. Almost 30 % of 650 gut isolates formed a statistically well-supported clade that included Candida tanzawaensis. The yeasts in the clade were isolated from 11 families of beetles, of which Tenebrionidae and Erotylidae were most commonly sampled. Repeated isolation of certain yeasts from the same beetle species at different times and places indicated strong host associations. Sexual reproduction was never observed in the yeasts. Based on comparisons of small- and large-subunit rRNA gene sequences and morphological and physiological traits, the yeasts were placed in Candida ambrosiae and in 16 other undescribed taxa. In this report, the novel species in the genus Candida are described and their relationships with other taxa in the Saccharomycetes are discussed. A novel strain, R2A16-10T, was isolated from greenhouse soil in Yeoju, Korea. The taxonomy of strain R2A16-10T was studied by using polyphasic methods. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses, strain R2A16-10T was found to be phylogenetically related to type strains of Dyella species (96.7–96.9 %), Frateuria aurantia DSM 6220T (96.5 %), Fulvimonas soli LMG 19981T (96.3 %) and Rhodanobacter species (94.9–95.7 %). Strain R2A16-10T, which produced yellow-coloured colonies, was Gram-negative, rod-shaped (0.3–0.4×1.5–3.5 μm) and motile. The predominant fatty acids were 17 : 1 iso ω9c (25.5 %), 15 : 0 iso (18.7 %) and 17 : 0 iso (14.6 %), and the major hydroxy fatty acids were 11 : 0 iso 3-OH (5.0 %), 13 : 0 iso 3-OH (3.4 %) and 17 : 0 iso 3-OH (1.0 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The G+C content of the DNA of the type strain was 63.0 mol%. On the basis of the data from this study, strain R2A16-10T represents a novel species of the genus Dyella, for which the name Dyella yeojuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R2A16-10T (=KACC 11405T=DSM 17673T).

This study investigated the occurrence of Eurytremaspp. in cattle by analysis of the partial 18S rRNA gene sequence. Trematodes from 44 bovine pancreas were collected and classified based on typical morphological features. PCR assay and sequence analyses of amplified products confirmed that the trematodes classified as Eurytrema coelomaticum were phylogenetically distinct from those identified as E. pancreaticum. The results of this study represent the first molecular characterization of E. coelomaticum within the Americas, and provide an efficient method to differentiate digenean trematodes of domestic animals.

A novel isolate belonging to the genus Streptomyces, strain YIM 47672T, was obtained from soil from Hainan, an island in China. The characterization of this isolate was performed by using a polyphasic approach. The strain formed long spore chains in the aerial mycelia. The cell wall contained l-diaminopimelic acid, traces of meso-diaminopimelic acid and glycine. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained galactose and xylose. The phospholipid was of type II. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities for YIM 47672T with respect to the most closely related type strains of species of the genus Streptomyces were less than 96.3 %. Therefore strain YIM 47672T represents a novel member of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces hainanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 47672T (=CCTCC AA 205017T=DSM 41900T).

In many countries including Japan, the status of emerging antimicrobial resistance among Serratia spp. and Citrobacter spp. in companion animals remains unknown because these genera are rarely isolated from animals. In this study, 30 Serratia spp. and 23 Citrobacter spp. isolates from companion animals underwent susceptibility testing for 10 antimicrobials. Phenotypic and genetic approaches were used to identify the mechanisms of extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC). Subsequently, ESC-resistant Citrobacter spp. strains underwent multilocus sequence typing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A significantly higher rate (34.8%) of ESC resistance was observed in Citrobacter spp. isolates than in Serratia spp. isolates (0%). ESC resistance was detected in five C. freundii strains, two C. portucalensis strains, and one C. koseri strain. All of the ESC-resistant Citrobacter spp. strains harbored CMY-type and/or DHA-type AmpC β-lactamases. Three C. freundii strains harbored the CTX-M-3-type extended-spectrum β-lactamases. Notably, the three blaCTX-3-producing and two blaCMY-117-bearing C. freundii strains (obtained from different patients in one hospital) had the same sequence type (ST156 and ST18, respectively) and similar PFGE profiles. We believe that ESC-resistant Citrobacter spp. are important nosocomial pathogens in veterinary medicine. Therefore, infection control in animal hospitals is essential to prevent dissemination of these resistant pathogens.

The aim of this study was to reclarify the taxonomic status of strain Bacillus invictae Bi.FFUP1 T by performing comparative analyses with the other four type strains within the Bacillus pumilus group. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strains B. invictae Bi.FFUP1 T ( = DSMZ 26896T = MCCC 1A07089T), B. altitudinis 41KF2bT ( = DSMZ 21631T = MCCC 1A06452T), B. safensis FO-36bT ( = DSMZ 19292T = MCCC 1A6451T), B. pumilus ATCC 7061T ( = DSMZ 27T = MCCC 1A06453T) and B. xiamenensis HYC-10T ( = MCCC 1A00008T) were, respectively, 82.90  % and 98.10  %, which are greater than the thresholds for bacterial species delineation, suggesting that they should belong to the same species, while the dDDH and ANI values between strain B. invictae DSMZ 26896T and the other three type strains within the B. pumilus group were below the respective thresholds of 70  % and 95  %. Meanwhile, B. invictae DSMZ 26896T and B. altitudinis 41KF2bT shared 98.7  % gyrB gene sequence similarity based on resequencing, whereas strain B. invictae DSMZ 26896T shared low similarities ( < 95  %) with the other three type strains. In addition, in comparison with those from the other three type strains, phenotypic data of B. invictae DSMZ 26896T and B. altitudinis 41KF2bT, including API 20NE, API ZYM, Biolog GN2 and API 50CHB tests, showed slight differences. The data from these combined genotypic and phenotypic analyses suggest that Bacillus invictae Branquinho et al. 2014 should be regarded as a later heterotypic synonym of Bacillus altitudinis Shivaji et al. 2006.
