A novel bacterial strain, designated THG-PC7T, was isolated from fallow farmland soil in Yongin, South Korea. Cells of strain THG-PC7T were Gram-stain-negative, dark yellow, aerobic, rod-shaped and had gliding motility. Strain THG-PC7T grew optimally at 25–35 °C, at pH 7 and in the absence of NaCl. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified strain THG-PC7T as belonging to the genus Lysobacter, exhibiting highest sequence similarity with Lysobacter ximonensis KCTC 22336T (98.7 %) followed by Lysobacter niastensis KACC 11588T (95.7 %). In DNA–DNA hybridization tests, DNA relatedness between strain THG-PC7T and its closest phylogenetic neighbour L. ximonensis was below 25 %. The DNA G+C content of the novel isolate was determined to be 62.5 mol%. Flexirubin-type pigments were found to be present. The major cellular fatty acids were determined to be iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1ω9c. The major respiratory quinone was identified as ubiquonone-8 (Q8). The predominant polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified aminophospolipid. On the basis of results from DNA–DNA hybridization and the polyphasic data, strain THG-PC7T represents a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the name Lysobacter novalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is THG-PC7T( = KACC 18276T = CCTCC AB 2014319T).

Two Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterial strains, 1-2T and 1-4 were isolated from dry riverbed soil collected from the Xietongmen area of Tibet, China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the novel strains were shown to belong to the genus Pedobacter, sharing <95 % sequence similarity with all recognized species of the genus Pedobacter. The major respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (comprising iso-C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c). The DNA G+C contents were 37.2–37.6 mol%. Chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of the two new isolates to the genus Pedobacter and the results of physiological and biochemical tests confirmed that the new strains differed significantly from the recognized species of the genus Pedobacter. Therefore, the new isolates represent a novel species within the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter glucosidilyticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1-2T (=CCTCC AB 206110T=KCTC 22438T).

The taxonomic position of three novel marine, heterotrophic, pigmented and agarolytic bacteria with gliding motility, isolated from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius, was investigated. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strains KMM 6166, KMM 6172T and KMM 6173 are members of the phylum Bacteroidetes; their nearest neighbours were Belliella baltica and Hongiella marincola (similarities of 94.5 and 93.6 %, respectively). The DNA G+C content of the strains was 44–45 mol%. The predominant fatty acids were C15 : 0 iso, C16 : 1 ω5c, C17 : 1 iso ω9c, C17 : 0 iso 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C15 : 0 iso 2-OH). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7. Results of molecular experiments supported by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data enabled the isolates to be classified as representatives of a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Echinicola pacifica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Echinicola pacifica is the type species of the genus Echinicola, and its type strain is KMM 6172T (=KCTC 12368T=LMG 23350T).

Three novel aerobic, elliptic bacteria, designated DQHS4T, DQHS8 and DQHS15, were isolated from sediment of a seashore pond for sea cucumber culture in Jimo, Qingdao, on the east coast of China. Cells were Gram-, oxidase- and catalase-negative. All three strains grew at 15–42 °C, pH 5–9 and NaCl concentrations between 0.5 and 10 %. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed high (>85 %) relatedness among the three novel isolates and suggested that the strains constitute a single species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that these bacteria had less than 90 % similarity to all described species of the phylum Bacteroidetes; the closest relative of the three isolates was Prolixibacter bellariivorans F2T, sharing only 89.6 % sequence similarity. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (19.8–20.0 %), iso-C15 : 0 (16.9–17.3 %), anteiso-C17 : 1 B and/or iso-C17 : 1 I (7.4–8.7 %), C17 : 0 2-OH (8.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (8.2–8.6 %) and C17 : 1ω6c (5.6–6.0 %). The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 (MK-7) and the DNA G+C content was 41.8–43.5 mol%. Based on the distinct phylogenetic position and the combination of genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, these three strains were considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the phylum Bacteroidetes, for which the name Sunxiuqinia elliptica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Sunxiuqinia elliptica is DQHS4T ( = CGMCC 1.9156T  = NCCB 100301T  = LMG 25367T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain RSG39T, was isolated from the gut of a Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain RSG39T belonged to the genus Simplicispira in the class Betaproteobacteria and its highest sequence similarity was shared with S. psychrophila (98.4 %). The isolate grew optimally at 20 °C, at pH 7 and with 0 % (w/v) NaCl. The main respiratory quinone of the isolate was ubiquinone Q-8. The major cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The polar lipids of the isolate were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and six unidentified lipids. The DNA–DNA hybridization values showed < 7.4 % genomic relatedness with closely related strains. The genomic DNA G+C content was 65.2 mol %. Based on phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses, strain RSG39T represents a novel species of the genus Simplicispira, for which the name Simplocospira piscis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RSG39T ( = KACC 17539T = JCM 19291T).

Three novel heterotrophic, Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, aerobic, gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive bacteria were isolated from algae collected in the Gulf of Peter the Great, Sea of Japan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strains studied represented members of the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed 93·5–93·8 % similarity with their closest relative, Psychroserpens burtonensis. The DNA G+C content of the strains was 34–37 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1, iso-C16 : 0-3OH and iso-C17 : 0-3OH. On the basis of their phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the newly described bacteria have been assigned to the new genus Winogradskyella gen. nov., as Winogradskyella thalassocola sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3907T=KCTC 12221T=LMG 22492T=DSM 15363T), Winogradskyella epiphytica sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3906T=KCTC 12220T=LMG 22491T=CCUG 47091T) and Winogradskyella eximia sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3944T (=KCTC 12219T=LMG 22474T).

A Gram-stain-variable, rod-shaped, non-motile and endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain HZ1T, was isolated from a sample of bank side soil from Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, PR China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HZ1T was closely related to members of the genus Paenibacillus, sharing the highest levels of sequence similarity with Paenibacillus agarexedens DSM 1327T (94.4 %), Paenibacillus sputi KIT00200-70066-1T (94.4 %). Growth occurred at 15–42 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), pH 5.0–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and NaCl concentrations of up to 6.0 % (w/v) were tolerated (optimum 0.5 %). The dominant respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The major polar lipids of strain HZ1T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and several unknown lipids. The diagnostic diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic data, strain HZ1T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ripae sp. nov. (type strain HZ1T = CCTCC AB 2014276T = LMG 28639T) is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic, non-flagellated, chemoheterotrophic bacterium, designated IMCC14385T, was isolated from surface seawater of the East Sea, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that IMCC14385T represented a member of the genus Halioglobus sharing 94.6–97.8 % similarities with species of the genus. Whole-genome sequencing of IMCC14385T revealed a genome size of 4.3 Mbp and DNA G+C content of 56.7 mol%. The genome of IMCC14385T shared an average nucleotide identity of 76.6 % and digital DNA–DNA hybridization value of 21.6 % with the genome of Halioglobus japonicus KCTC 23429T. The genome encoded the complete poly-β-hydroxybutyrate biosynthesis pathway. The strain contained summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c), summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c) and C17 : 1 ω8c as the predominant cellular fatty acids as well as ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) as the respiratory quinone. The polar lipids detected in the strain were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified phospholipids, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified aminophospholipid and four unidentified lipids. On the basis of taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is suggested that IMCC14385T represents a novel species of the genus Halioglobus , for which the name Halioglobus maricola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IMCC14385T (=KCTC 72520T=NBRC 114072T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, orange-coloured, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile bacterium, designated strain 92VT, was isolated from the marine sponge Amphilectus fucorum, collected from Lough Hyne, County Cork, Ireland. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 92VT clustered with members of the family Flavobacteriaceae , the closest member being Aquimarina latercula NCIMB 1399T, with a gene sequence similarity of 97.5 %. Strain 92VT required seawater for growth with optimal growth occurring at 25 °C, at pH 6–7 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. MK-6 was the sole respiratory quinone present and the major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content was 36.1 mol%. Combined phenotypic differences and phylogenetic analysis indicate that strain 92VT represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina amphilecti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 92VT ( = NCIMB 14723T = DSM 25232T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 1105T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province in South Korea and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate belongs to the order Bacillales, showing the highest level of sequence similarity with respect to Tumebacillus permanentifrigoris Eur1 9.5T (94.6 %). The phylogenetic distances from other described species with validly published names within the order Bacillales were greater than 9.0 %. Strain Gsoil 1105T had a genomic DNA G+C content of 55.6 mol% and menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Tumebacillus, for which the name Tumebacillus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 1105T ( = KCTC 13942T  = DSM 18389T).

A novel Gram-negative, motile, bacteriochlorophyll b-containing purple non-sulfur bacterium, strain JA248T, was isolated from phototrophic enrichments of a yellow–green epilithic biofilm sample collected from Gulmarg, India. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JA248T was 63.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain JA248T had highest similarity to members of the genus Blastochloris and was closely related to Blastochloris sulfoviridis DSM 729T (98.5 % sequence similarity) and Blastochloris viridis DSM 133T (98.4 %) of the class Alphaproteobacteria. Strain JA248T was characterized based on polyphasic taxonomy, and distinct phenotypic and molecular differences based on DNA–DNA hybridization (relatedness of <46.5 % with the two species of the genus Blastochloris), multilocus sequence analysis, and phenotypic and chemotaxonomic evidence separated strain JA248T from other species of the genus Blastochloris. Strain JA248T therefore represents a novel species in the genus Blastochloris, for which the name Blastochloris gulmargensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA248T ( = JCM 14795T  = DSM 19786T).
