Solar power represents a vast resource which could, in principle, meet the world's needs for clean power generation. Recent growth in the use of photovoltaic (PV) technology has demonstrated the potential of solar power to deliver on a large scale. Whilst the dominant PV technology is based on crystalline silicon, a wide variety of alternative PV materials and device concepts have been explored in an attempt to decrease the cost of the photovoltaic electricity. This article explores the potential for such emerging technologies to deliver cost reductions, scalability of manufacture, rapid carbon mitigation and new science in order to accelerate the uptake of solar power technologies.

To evaluate CO2 emission mitigation potential and cost effectiveness of rice husk utilization, Life Cycle Analysis was conducted for 9 scenarios. The results showed that, gasification is the most efficient CO2 mitigation. From cost analysis, the cost mitigation can be achieved by replacing the current fossil fuels in cooking scenarios. Among the power generation scenarios, it was found that 30MW combustion and 5MW gasification power generations were the most economically-efficient scenarios. The briquette combustion power generation appeared less cost-competitive than direct combustion, whilst the large-scale gasification scenarios and the pyrolysis scenarios give the increase in cost from the baseline. From the viewpoints of both CO2 and cost, it was indicated that the win-win scenarios can be the rice husk use for cooking, for large-scale combustion power generation, and for small-scale gasification.

Solar rooftop systems in the residential sector have been rapidly increased in the term of installed capacity. There are various factors, such as climate, temperature, and solar radiation, that have effects on solar power generation efficiency. This paper presents a performance assessment of a solar system installed on the rooftop of residence in different regions of Thailand by using PSIM simulation. Solar rooftop installation comparison in different regions is carried out to evaluate the suitable location. In addition, three types of solar panels are used in research: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. The electrical parameters of real power and energy generated from the systems are investigated and analyzed. Furthermore, the economic evaluation of different solar rooftop system sizes using the monocrystalline module is investigated by using economic indicators of discounted payback period (DPP), net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and profitability index (PI). Results show that the central region of Thailand is a suitable place for installing solar rooftop in terms of solar radiation, and the temperature has more solar power generation capacity than the other regions. The monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels can generate maximum power close to each other. All solar rooftop sizes with the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme give the same DPP of 6.1 years, IRR of 15%, and PI of 2.57 which are better than the cases without the FiT scheme. However, a large-scale installation of solar rooftop systems can receive more electrical energy produced from the solar rooftop systems. As a result, the larger solar rooftop system sizes can achieve better economic satisfaction.

Abstract The concept of coal-fired power generation aided with solar energy uses stable fossil energy to compensate the instability and intermittently of solar power and reduces the cost of concentrated solar power (CSP) by decreasing the large-scale heat storage and turbine systems of CSP. In this study, trough solar collector system (TSCS) was integrated into the low-pressure heater side of a 660 MW coal-fired power generation system. In the system in which the 6# LP heater is completely replaced by TSCS, the variation value of the steam extraction flowrate of the LP heaters and the turbine output power decrease with the reduction in loads from 100% to 60% THA, and the output power increases by approximately 1 MW under 100% THA. When TSCS completely replaces the 6# LP heater under the load of 75%, the effects of direct normal irradiance (DNI) increase and flow ratio decrease on the main operating parameters of solar-aided coal-fired power plant (SCPP) were studied. Results show that the step increase of DNI decreases the 5# steam extraction flowrate and increases the output power by nearly 3 MW. When the flow ratio decreases by 139.87 kg/s, the output power decreases by around 0.35 MW. The dynamic characteristics of SCPP under different parallel situations with the load of 75% were also studied. As the number of parallel stage increases, the decrement in 5# steam extraction flowrate and the increment in output power decrease. The response time also decreases. Our study aims to provide detailed references for the control system design and optimization of coal-fired power units aided with solar energy.

Parabolic trough solar technology is the most proven and lowest cost large-scale solar power technology available today, primarily because of the nine large commercial-scale solar power plants that are operating in the California Mojave Desert. However, no new plants have been built during the past ten years because the cost of power from these plants is more expensive than power from conventional fossil fuel power plants. This paper reviews the current cost of energy and the potential for reducing the cost of energy from parabolic trough solar power plant technology based on the latest technological advancements and projected improvements from industry and sponsored R&D. The paper also looks at the impact of project financing and incentives on the cost of energy.

This paper focuses on the interdependent relationship of power generation, transportation and CO2 emissions to evaluate the impact of electric vehicle deployment on power generation and CO2 emissions. The value of this evaluation is in the employment of a large-scale, bottom-up, national energy modeling system that encompasses the complex relationships of producing, transforming, transmitting and supplying energy to meet the useful demand characteristics with great technological detail. One of such models employed in this analysis is the BUEMS model. The BUEMS model provides evidence of win-win policy options that lead to profitable decarbonization using Turkey’s data in BUEMS. Specifically, the result shows that a ban on diesel fueled vehicles reduces lifetime emissions as well as lifetime costs. Furthermore, model results highlight the cost-effective emission reduction potential of e-buses in urban transportation. More insights from the results indicate that the marginal cost of emission reduction through e-bus transportation is much lower than that through other policy measures such as carbon taxation in transport. This paper highlights the crucial role the electricity sector plays in the sustainability of e-mobility and the value of related policy prescriptions.

Abstract Although crystalline silicon PV technology has been in use for more than 30 years, PV has remained a "cottage industry" until the recent expansion. This paper provides an introduction to the issues of reliability in the photovoltaic (PV) field, and the work the Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Program is focused on to address these issues. In particular, the works of the Reliability Programs at both Sandia National Laboratories and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory are reviewed with several examples of results included and sited. Expanding reliability assessment and failure analysis techniques for components and systems can enhance the reliability of PV systems, which is necessary for large-scale deployment of PV as a power generation source.
