The nature of the hard polished outer layer of the teeth of this group of fishes has been from time to time a subject of discussion, some authors holding that it is enamel, whilst others deny its claim to be so styled. The author describes its physical, chemical, and histological peculiarities, calling attention to its hardness, its optical properties, its almost entire solubility in weak acids, and to its tubularity, in all of which respects it resembles unquestionably an enamel.

AbstractLi2SiO3 compound exhibits unique electronic and optical properties. The state-of-the-art analyses, which based on first-principle calculations, have successfully confirmed the concise physical/chemical picture and the orbital bonding in Li–O and Si–O bonds. Especially, the unusual optical response behavior includes a large red shift of the onset frequency due to the extremely strong excitonic effect, the polarization of optical properties along three-directions, various optical excitations structures and the most prominent plasmon mode in terms of the dielectric functions, energy loss functions, absorption coefficients and reflectance spectra. The close connections of electronic and optical properties can identify a specific orbital hybridization for each distinct excitation channel. The presented theoretical framework will be fully comprehending the diverse phenomena and widen the potential application of other emerging materials.

<p>To meet public concerns of health caused by the high concentration of PM highly raised, this research has been done to find out unique physical, chemical, and optical characteristics of aerosols in the case of recent four years high PM concentration events over the East Asian region, especially in Korea and China. Severe air pollution over the East Asian region has occurred by the rapid development of urban areas and industrialization. Also, the meteorological conditions in East Asia are strongly correlated with a high concentration of air pollution and seasonal variation of aerosols. There are three types of aerosol properties (physical, chemical, and optical property), and each property is essential to understand the characteristics of regional and seasonal high PM concentrations. This research has been done to find out unique physical, chemical, and optical characteristics of aerosols in the case of high PM concentration events, especially in two super-mega cities (Seoul and Beijing) of Korea and China, by using various observations measured during recent four years. To analyze those characteristics of aerosols at high concentration events occur, various measurement data are used, like ambient surface air monitoring data (for physical properties) from national network in both Korea and China, Intensive Monitoring Data (for chemical properties), AERONET, GOCI satellite (for optical properties), and meteorological data during recent years (2015 – 2018). This study can provide observational evidence to confirm that each different region has different physical, chemical and optical characteristics of aerosol with the different time periods. The comprehensive results analyzed from this study and integrated methodologies suggested in this study might be useful to make a better in-depth understanding of the relations between various aerosol properties in certain regions and periods.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong>Key words : </strong>Aerosol, High concentration events, Physical/Chemical/Optical Properties of aerosols</p>

The appearance of the skin is dependent on the optical properties of the various layers of tissue and the presence of pigments. In order to reproduce the lifelikeness of the skin in developing digital prostheses, a multiple layered moulding technique was utilised. The prosthesis was moulded in two coloured layers, an outer layer and an inner layer. Four combinations of multiple coloured layers and two single coloured layers varying in their optical properties and base colours were assessed. In two groups an additional intermediate layer of detailed colours was added between the two layers, to enhance the creaselines, nails, blood vessels, and other features. All prosthesis were moulded to a total thickness of 0.6 mm. This method of moulding was based on the anatomical characteristics of the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin and their optical characteristics. The aim was to determine which combination of multiple layers gave the best outcome and made the prosthesis look lifelike in appearance. The appearance and lifelikeness of the prostheses were qualitatively assessed by a panel of assessers divided according to their vocation. The study showed that the best combination for moulding the prosthesis in multiple layers was to have the outer layer translucent and the inner layer opaque. An intermediate layer should be incorporated to enhance the more prominent surface features and the nails. The base colour of the inner layer should be darker than the outer layer to allow the intermediate layer to have a reflective background.
