scholarly journals On the presence of hœm-agglutinins, hœm-opsonins, and hœmolysins in the blood obtained from infectious and non-infectious diseases in man. (preliminary report.)

This preliminary report is for the purpose of introducing certain results which have been obtained by allowing normal and immune human serum to act in the presence of normal and immune blood cells. These experiments have brought to light many interesting and important points in human hæmatology. The unlimited number of experiments which have been made on immune substances in the blood of the lower animals in comparison to similar investigations in man is most striking. It is necessary to draw special attention to the fact that the work of others has been either briefly referred to or omitted merely because this report is only intended to draw attention to the main facts met with in these investigations, avoiding as far as possible a detailed survey of the subject.

Leukemia is a type of cancer that is on white blood cell. This disease are characterized by abundance of abnormal white blood cell called lymphoblast in the bone marrow. Classification of blood cell types, calculation of the ratio of cell types and comparison with normal blood cells can be the subject of diagnosing this disease. The diagnostic process is carried out manually by hematologists through microscopic image. This method is likely to provide a subjective result and time-consuming.The application of digital image processing techniques and machine learning in the process of classifying white blood cells can provide more objective results. This research used thresholding method as segmentation and  multilayer method of back propagation perceptron with variations in the extraction of textural features, geometry, and colors. The results of segmentation testing in this study amounted to 68.70%. Whereas the classification test shows that the combination of feature extraction of GLCM features, geometry features, and color features gives the best results. This test produces an accuration value 91.43%, precision value of 50.63%, sensitivity 56.67%, F1Score 51.95%, and specitifity 94.16%.

Objectives - to study the syphilis morbidity rate in the population of the Republic of Mordovia in years 2015-2017, to determine the age, sex and social patterns of morbidity. Material and methods. The subject of the analysis was the data of the official annual report on sexually transmitted infectious diseases, and contagious skin diseases in the Republic of Mordovia in 2015-2017. Results. In 2017 the syphilis morbidity comprised 21.1 per 100k (total of 171 cases), this result is 2.8% lower than in 2016 (21.7 per 100k). In general, the morbidity rate remains 1.5 times higher than overage in Russia. Despite the positive dynamics, the preconditions for the further prevalence of syphilis among the population remain. Conclusion. Additional measures are required, aimed at raising the general cultural level and health education of the population, regarding to the safe sexual behavior, especially among people of fertile age.

There are only about 30 descriptions of cases of the so-called "acute ataxia", which usually develops after infectious diseases, in the literature available to me, so every case of this disease deserves our attention. The entire literature on the subject should be divided into two periods: in the first, all cases of acute ataxia, both spinal and cerebellar, were described together, without distinction; the second period begins with the works of Bekhterev and Nonne, who singled out cases of acute cerebellar ataxia into a special group.

The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effect of 3-arylidenechromanone (1) and 3arylideneflavanone (2) on HL-60 and NALM-6 cell lines (two human leukemia cell lines) and a WM-115 melanoma cell line. Both compounds exhibited high cytotoxic activity with higher cytotoxicity exerted by compound 2, for which IC50 values below 10 µM were found for each cell line. For compound 1, the IC50 values were higher than 10 µM for HL-60 and WM-115 cell lines, but IC50 < 10 µM was found for the NALM-6 cell line. Both compounds, at the concentrations close to IC50 (concentration range: 5–24 µM/L for compound 1 and 6–10 µM/L for compound 2), are not toxic towards red blood cells. The synthesized compounds were characterized using spectroscopic methods 1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, MS, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The lipophilicity of both synthesized compounds was determined using an RP-TLC method and the logP values found were compared with the theoretical ones taken from the Molinspiration Cheminformatics (miLogP) software package. The mode of binding of both compounds to human serum albumin was assessed using molecular docking methods.

Abstract Background Patients are frequently counselled on vaccinations and screened for infectious diseases prior to starting immune-modulating therapy; however, the most up-to-date ECCO guideline on the subject (1) recommends vaccination screening and completion at diagnosis. We assessed adherence to the ECCO guidelines in patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods Medical records from 100 IBD patients up to 6 months of their diagnosis were analysed retrospectively at a tertiary IBD centre in the UK. Data were collected for infectious diseases screening, documentation of vaccination history and education/advice on vaccination. Vaccination rates for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, hepatitis B, human papillomavirus (HPV), influenza, pneumococcal and varicella-zoster were documented if they were recorded in the medical notes. Results A total of 84% of patients were not screened for infectious diseases at diagnosis or within 6 months. Overall, 97% had no vaccination history documented and 97% were not advised to attend their GPs for vaccinations. Conclusion Despite the existence of international guidelines, poor compliance to vaccination in patients with IBD has been shown in line with previous reports (2). This suboptimal vaccination compliance could be partly due to poor documentation and the retrospective method of data collection. However, there is clearly an urgent need for education and execution of vaccination guidelines in IBD. This implementation of work is now ongoing at our unit through automatic formal standard vaccination notification on every IBD clinic visit, which will be further re-audited in 6 months’ time.

AbstractRed blood cells are the subject of diverse studies. One branch is the observation and theoretical modelling of their behaviour in a shear flow. This work deals with the flow of single red cells suspended in solutions much more viscous than blood plasma. Below a critical shear rate (${\dot {\gamma } }_{t} $) the red cells rotate with little change of their resting shape. Above that value they become elongated and aligned in the shear field. We measured${\dot {\gamma } }_{t} $at viscosities (${\eta }_{0} $) ranging from 10.7 to 104 mPa s via observation along the vorticity of a Poiseuille flow in a glass capillary;${\eta }_{0} {\dot {\gamma } }_{t} $decreased steeply with increasing${\eta }_{0} $up to a value of 25 mPa s and remained constant for higher values. Present theoretical models are not in keeping with the measured data. Modifications of basic model assumptions are suggested.
