The subloading-friction model is capable of describing static friction, the smooth transition from static to kinetic friction and the recovery to static friction after sliding stops or sliding velocity decreases. This causes a negative rate sensitivity (i.e. a decrease in friction resistance with increasing sliding velocity). A generalized subloading-friction model is formulated in this article by incorporating the concept of overstress for viscoplastic sliding velocity into the subloading-friction model to describe not only negative rate sensitivity but also positive rate sensitivity (i.e. an increase in friction resistance with increasing sliding velocity) at a general sliding velocity ranging from quasi-static to impact sliding. The validity of the model is verified by numerical experiments and comparisons with test data obtained from friction tests using a lubricated steel specimen.

In a previous paper, the simulated loci of high-speed cornering did not correspond with experimentally obtained results because the tire model used only the sticking in the Coulomb friction model. If the centrifugal force becomes larger than the cornering force of the tires, then the vehicle does not maintain the desired course. The cornering force is affected by the sticking or slipping condition of the tires. In order to simulate the high-speed cornering trajectory, the present paper assumes three stages of friction: low kinetic friction force at the beginning of slipping, the period of kinetic friction force, and the return to the static friction condition at small slip angles. In addition to the Rear motor Rear drive (RR) type vehicle, the Front motor Front drive (FF) type vehicle with a Sensor Steering Mechanism (SSM) and a 4-wheel steering mechanism is developed. In the experiments of present paper, both of these robots are run on an oval course at high speed. Numerical simulation and experimental results indicate effective prediction by the friction model.

Objective: Currently eligibility for expanded Medicare items for eating disorders (excluding anorexia nervosa) require a score ⩾ 3 on the 22-item Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). We compared these EDE-Q “cases” with continuous scores on a validated 7-item version of the EDE-Q (EDE-Q7) to identify an EDE-Q7 cut-off commensurate to 3 on the EDE-Q. Methods: We utilised EDE-Q scores of female university students ( N = 337) at risk of developing an eating disorder. We used a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to assess the relationship between the true-positive rate (sensitivity) and the false-positive rate (1-specificity) of cases ⩾ 3. Results: The area under the curve showed outstanding discrimination of 0.94 (95% CI: .92–.97). We examined two specific cut-off points on the EDE-Q7, which included 100% and 87% of true cases, respectively. Conclusion: Given the EDE-Q cut-off for Medicare is used in conjunction with other criteria, we suggest using the more permissive EDE-Q7 cut-off (⩾2.5) to replace use of the EDE-Q cut-off (⩾3) in eligibility assessments.

Slip inception mechanism is very important for modeling of static friction and understanding of some experimental observations of friction. In this work, slip inception was treated as a local competence of interfacial bonding failure and weaker material failure. At any contacting point, if bond shear strength is weaker than softer material shear strength, slip inception is governed by interfacial bonding failure. Otherwise, it is governed by softer material failure. Considering the possible co-existence of these two slip inception mechanisms during presliding, a hybrid static friction model for smooth dry contact was proposed, which indicates that the static friction consists of two components: one contributed by contact area where bonding failure is dominant and the other contributed by contact area where material failure is dominant. With the proposed static friction model, the effects of contact pressure, the material properties, and the contact geometry on static friction were discussed.

A novel static friction model for the unlubricated contact of random rough surfaces at micro/nano scale is presented. This model is based on the energy dissipation mechanism that states that changes in the potential of the surfaces in contact lead to friction. Furthermore, it employs the statistical theory of two nominally flat rough surfaces in contact, which assumes that the contact between the equivalent rough peaks and the rigid flat plane satisfies the condition of interfacial friction. Additionally, it proposes a statistical coefficient of positional correlation that represents the contact situation between the equivalent rough surface and the rigid plane. Finally, this model is compared with the static friction model established by Kogut and Etsion (KE model). The results of the proposed model agree well with those of the KE model in the fully elastic contact zone. For the calculation of dry static friction of rough surfaces in contact, previous models have mainly been based on classical contact mechanics; however, this model introduces the potential barrier theory and statistics to address this and provides a new way to calculate unlubricated friction for rough surfaces in contact.

The resistance during the frictional interaction of polymeric materials with metallic materials is characterized by a significant dependence on the dynamics of the motion inputs. In a metal-polymer friction pair, the static friction resistance during standstill under load depends on the rate of growth of the force causing the relative motion. Tribological tests of selected (polymer-metal) sliding pairs were carried out. The selected polymers were polyurethane (TPU), polysulfone (PSU), and silicone rubber (SI). They interacted with a pin made of normalized C45 steel under unitary pressure p = 0.5 MPa in dry friction conditions at different gradients of the force driving the relative motion (dF/dt = 0.1-20 [N/s]). The static friction coefficient of the selected sliding pairs was determined on the basis of the recorded static friction force values. The test results show a significant influence of the rate of increase in the motion driving force on the values of static friction resistance. This is mainly due to the viscoelastic properties of polymers.

Abstract Bolted connection is one of the most widely used mechanical connections because of its easiness of installation and disassembly. Research of bolted joints mainly focuses on two aspects: high precision tightening and improvement of anti-loosening performance. The under-head bearing friction coefficient and the thread friction coefficient are the two most important parameters that affect the tightening result of the bolted joint. They are also the most critical parameters that affect the anti-loosening performance of the bolted joint. Coulomb friction model is a commonly used model to describe under-head bearing friction and thread friction, which considers the friction coefficient as a constant independent of normal pressure and relative sliding velocity. In this paper, the viscous effect of the under-head bearing friction and thread friction is observed by measuring the friction coefficient of bolted joints. The value of the friction coefficient increases with the increase of the relative sliding velocity and the decrease of the normal pressure. It is found that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the friction coefficient of bolted joints. Taking into account the dense friction effect, the loosening prediction model of bolted joints is modified. The experimental results show that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the under-head bearing friction coefficient and thread friction coefficient. The model considering the dense effect can more accurately predict the loosening characteristics of bolted joints.

In this paper, a stick-slip compensation for the micro-positioning is presented using the statistical rough surface contact model. As for the micro-positioning structure, PZT (lead(Pb) zirconia(Zr) Titanate(Ti)) actuator is used to drive the load for precise positioning with its high resolution incorporating with the PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) control algorithm. Since the stick-slip characteristics for the micro structures are highly nonlinear and complicated, it is necessary to incorporate more detailed stick-slip model for the applications involving the high precision motion control. Thus, the elastic-plastic static friction model is used for the stick-slip compensation considering the elastic-plastic asperity contact in the rough surfaces statistically. Mathematical model of the system for the positioning apparatus was derived from the dynamic behaviors of structural parts. Since the conventional piezoelectric actuator generates the short stroke, a bridge-type flexural hinge mechanism is introduced to amplify the linear motion range. Using the proposed smart structure, simulations under the representative positioning motion were conducted to demonstrate the micro-positioning under the stick-slip friction.

A two degrees of freedom nonlinear dynamics model of self-excited vibration induced by dry-friction of brake disk and pads is built firstly, the stability of vibration system at the equilibrium points is analyzed using the nonlinear dynamics theory. Finally the numerical method is taken to study the impacts of friction coefficient on brake groan. The calculation result shows that with the increase of kinetic friction coefficient /or the decrease of difference value between static friction coefficient and kinetic friction coefficient can prevent or restrain self-excited vibration from happening.

<p>Testing for COVID-19 has been unable to keep up with the demand. Further, the false negative rate is projected to be as high as 30% and test results can take some time to obtain. X-ray machines are widely available and provide images for diagnosis quickly. This paper explores how useful chest X-ray images can be in diagnosing COVID-19 disease. We have obtained 135 chest X-rays of COVID-19 and 320 chest X-rays of viral and bacterial pneumonia. </p><p> A pre-trained deep convolutional neural network, Resnet50 was tuned on 102 COVID-19 cases and 102 other pneumonia cases in a 10-fold cross validation. The results were </p><p> an overall accuracy of 89.2% with a COVID-19 true positive rate of 0.8039 and an AUC of 0.95. Pre-trained Resnet50 and VGG16 plus our own small CNN were tuned or trained on a balanced set of COVID-19 and pneumonia chest X-rays. An ensemble of the three types of CNN classifiers was applied to a test set of 33 unseen COVID-19 and 218 pneumonia cases. The overall accuracy was 91.24% with the true positive rate for COVID-19 of 0.7879 with 6.88% false positives for a true negative rate of 0.9312 and AUC of 0.94. </p><p> This preliminary study has flaws, most critically a lack of information about where in the disease process the COVID-19 cases were and the small data set size. More COVID-19 case images at good resolution will enable a better answer to the question of how useful chest X-rays can be for diagnosing COVID-19.</p>

Previous research on friction calculation models has mainly focused on static friction, whereas sliding friction calculation models are rarely reported. In this paper, a novel sliding friction model for realizing a dry spherical flat contact with a roughness effect at the micro/nano scale is proposed. This model yields the sliding friction by the change in the periodic substrate potential, adopts the basic assumptions of the Greenwood–Williamson random contact model about asperities, and assumes that the contact area between a rigid sphere and a nominal rough flat satisfies the condition of interfacial friction. It subsequently employs a statistical method to determine the total sliding friction force, and finally, the feasibility of this model presented is verified by atomic force microscopy friction experiments. The comparison results show that the deviations of the sliding friction force and coefficient between the theoretical calculated values and the experimental values are in a relatively acceptable range for the samples with a small plasticity index (Ψ ≤ 1).
