The evolution of large ocean waves: the role of local and rapid spectral changes

This paper concerns the formation of large-focused or near-focused waves in both unidirectional and directional sea-states. When the crests of wave components of varying frequency superimpose at one point in space and time, a large, transient, focused wave can occur. These events are believed to be representative of the largest waves arising in a random sea and, as such, are of importance to the design of marine structures. The details of how such waves form also offer an explanation for the formation of the so-called freak or rogue waves in deep water. The physical mechanisms that govern the evolution of focused waves have been investigated by applying both the fully nonlinear wave model of Bateman et al . (Bateman et al . 2001 J. Comput. Phys . 174 , 277–305) and the Zakharov's evolution equation (Zakharov 1968 J. Appl. Mech. Tech. Phys . 9 , 190–194). Aspects of these two wave models are complementary, and their combined use allows the full nonlinearity to be considered and, at the same time, provides insights into the dominant physical processes. In unidirectional seas, it has been shown that the local evolution of the wave spectrum leads to larger maximum crest elevations. In contrast, in directional seas, the maximum crest elevation is well predicted by a second-order theory based on the underlying spectrum, but the shape of the largest wave is not. The differences between the evolution of large waves in unidirectional and directional sea-states have been investigated by analysing the results of Bateman et al . (2001) using a number of spectral analysis techniques. It has been shown that during the formation of a focused wave event, there are significant and rapid changes to the underlying wave spectrum. These changes alter both the amplitude of the wave components and their dispersive properties. Importantly, in unidirectional sea-states, the bandwidth of the spectrum typically increases; whereas, in directional sea-states it decreases. The changes to the wave spectra have been investigated using Zakharov's equation (1968). This has shown that the third-order resonant effects dominate changes to both the amplitude of the wave components and the dispersive properties of the wave group. While this is the case in both unidirectional and directional sea-states, the consequences are very different. By examining these consequences, directional sea-states in which large wave events that are higher and steeper than second-order theory would predict have been identified. This has implications for the types of sea-states in which rogue waves are most likely to occur.

<p>Reliable prediction of oceanic waves during severe marine storms has always been foremost for offshore platform design, coastal activities, and navigation safety. Indeed, many damaging accidents and casualties during storms were ascribed to the impact with abnormal and unexpected waves. However, predicting extreme wave occurrence is a challenging task, at first, because of their inherent randomness, and because the observation of large ocean waves, of primary importance to assess theoretical and numerical models, is limited by the costs and risks of deployment during severe open-ocean sea-state conditions.</p><p>In the context of the EU-based Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) evolution, the LATEMAR project (https://www.mercator-ocean.fr/en/portfolio/latemar/) aimed at improving the modelling of large wave events during marine storms. Indeed, at present, operational systems only provide average and peak wave parameters, with no information on individual waves whatsoever. However, developments of the state-of-the-art third-generation wave models demonstrated that using the directional wave spectrum moments into theoretical statistical models for wave extremes, forecasters are able to accurately infer the expected shape and likelihood of the maximum waves during storms.</p><p>The main purpose of the activity is therefore to provide the wave models WAM and WAVEWATCH III with common procedures to explicitly estimate the maximum wave heights for each sea state. LATEMAR achieved this goal by: performing an extensive assessment of the model maximum waves using field observations collected from an oceanographic tower; comparing WAM and WAVEWATCH III maximum wave estimates in the Mediterranean Sea; investigating the sensitivity of the maximum waves on the main sea state parameters. All model developments and evaluations resulting from this research project will be directly applicable to the wave model forecasting systems to expand their catalogue.</p>

In ocean surface modeling a popular method of wave modeling is making use of ocean wave spectrum, which is a physical wave model and based on linear wave theories. The ocean waves produced in this way can reflect the statistical characteristics of the real ocean well. However, few investigations of ocean simulation have been focused on turbulent fluid under vary wind field in this way, while all ocean wave models are built with the same wind parameters. In order to resolve the problem of traditional method, we proposed a new method of dividing the ocean surface into regular grids and generating wave models with different parameters of wind in different location of view scope. The method not only preserves the fidelity of statistical characteristics, but also can be accelerated with the processing of GPU and widely used in VR applications.

AbstractNumerical wave models can output partitioned wave parameters at each grid point using a spectral partitioning technique. Because these wave partitions are usually organized according to the magnitude of their wave energy without considering the coherence of wave parameters in space, it can be difficult to observe the spatial distributions of wave field features from these outputs. In this study, an approach for spatially tracking coherent wave events (which means a cluster of partitions originating from the same meteorological event) from partitioned numerical wave model outputs is presented to solve this problem. First, an efficient traverse algorithm applicable for different types of grids, termed breadth-first search, is employed to track wave events using the continuity of wave parameters. Second, to reduce the impact of the garden sprinkler effect on tracking, tracked wave events are merged if their boundary outlines and wave parameters on these boundaries are both in good agreement. Partitioned wave information from the Integrated Ocean Waves for Geophysical and other Applications dataset is used to test the performance of this spatial tracking approach. The test results indicate that this approach is able to capture the primary features of partitioned wave fields, demonstrating its potential for wave data analysis, model verification, and data assimilation.

For bottom-supported offshore structures like oil drilling rigs and oil production platforms, a deterministic design wave approach is often applied using a regular non-linear Stokes’ wave. Thereby, the procedure accounts for non-linear effects in the wave loading but the randomness of the ocean waves is poorly represented, as the shape of the wave spectrum does not enter the wave kinematics. To overcome this problem and still keep the simplicity of a deterministic approach, Tromans, Anaturk and Hagemeijer (1991) suggested the use of a deterministic wave, defined as the expected linear Airy wave, given the value of the wave crest at a specific point in time or space. In the present paper a derivation of the expected second order short-crested wave riding on a uniform current is given. The analysis is based on the second order Sharma and Dean shallow water wave theory and the direction of the main wind direction can make any direction with the current. Numerical results showing the importance of the water depth, the directional spreading and the current on the conditional mean wave profile and the associated wave kinematics are presented. A discussion of the use of the conditional wave approach as design waves is given.

AbstractThree dissipative (two viscoelastic and one viscous) ice models are implemented in the spectral wave model WAVEWATCH III to estimate the ice-induced wave attenuation rate. These models are then explored and intercompared through hindcasts of two field cases: one in the autumn Beaufort Sea in 2015 and the other in the Antarctic marginal ice zone (MIZ) in 2012. The capability of these dissipative models, along with their limitations and applicability to operational forecasts, are analyzed and discussed. The sensitivity of the simulated wave height to different source terms—the ice-induced wave decay Sice and other physical processes Sother (e.g., wind input, nonlinear four-wave interactions)—is also investigated. For the Antarctic MIZ experiment, Sother is found to be remarkably less than Sice and thus contributes little to the simulated significant wave height Hs. The saturation of dHs/dx at large wave heights in this case, as reported by a previous study, is well reproduced by the three dissipative ice models with or without the utilization of Sother in the ice-infested seas. A clear downward trend in the peak frequency fp is found as Hs increases. As fp decreases, the dominant wave components of a wave spectrum will experience reduced damping by sea ice, and finally result in the flattening of dHs/dx for Hs > 3 m in this specific case. Nonetheless, Sother should not be disregarded within a more general modeling perspective, as our simulations suggest Sother could be comparable to Sice in the Beaufort Sea case where wave and ice conditions are remarkably different.

Previous work by Baldock, Swan and Taylor [1], Johannessen and Swan [2,3], and Bateman, Swan and Taylor [4,5] has demonstrated that in the vicinity of an extreme wave event there are significant and rapid changes in the local wave spectrum. The present paper combines two recent advances. The first is a new fully nonlinear directional wave model, the application of which is particularly suited to the description of extreme waves arising in realistic sea states. The second involves recent advances in time-frequency analysis techniques. Unlike traditional spectral analysis, based upon the Fourier transform, these allow local and rapid changes in a wave spectrum to be clearly identified. By combining these methods the proposed paper will first highlight the occurrence of these changes in realistic seas and will subsequently demonstrate their significance both in terms of estimating crest height elevations and in predicting the associated water particle kinematics.

The interest and studies on nonlinear waves are increased recently for their importance in the interaction with floating and fixed bodies. It is also well-known that nonlinearities influence wave crest and wave trough distributions, both deviating from the Rayleigh law. In this paper, a theoretical crest distribution is obtained, taking into account the extension of Boccotti’s quasideterminism theory (1982, “On Ocean Waves With High Crests,” Meccanica, 17, pp. 16–19), up to the second order for the case of three-dimensional waves in finite water depth. To this purpose, the Fedele and Arena (2005, “Weakly Nonlinear Statistics of High Random Waves,” Phys. Fluids, 17(026601), pp. 1–10) distribution is generalized to three-dimensional waves on an arbitrary water depth. The comparison with Forristall’s second order model (2000, “Wave Crest Distributions: Observations and Second-Order Theory,” J. Phys. Oceanogr., 30(8), pp. 1931–1943) shows the theoretical confirmation of his conclusion: The crest distribution in deep water for long-crested and short-crested waves are very close to each other; in shallow water the crest heights in three-dimensional waves are greater than values given by the long-crested model.

Abstract To predict the evolution of wave spectrum in real ocean, a machine leaning framework is developed by training a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network on a physics-based third generation wave model (Simulating WAve Nearshore, SWAN). Considering the realistic ocean waves are usually mixtures of windsea and swells, the wave spectrum is partitioned using a watershed algorithm, such that the windsea and swells are analysed and predicted separately. Four parameters are selected to capture the wave spectrum of each systems, including the significant wave height Hs, peaked wave period Tp, mean propagation direction Qm and directional spreading width sq. The results demonstrate the machine leaning model can achieve accurate prediction of wave condition, the MAEPs (mean absolute error percentage) of 1-hour prediction are less than 5.9%, 3.3%, 3.5% and 3.3% for Hs, Tp, Qm and σθ respectively, and accurate prediction of wave spectra is achieved. Even for 10-hour prediction, satisfactory results are obtained, e.g. the MAEP of Hs is less than 15.5%. The effects of output size (i.e. prediction duration), input data size (i.e. number of delays), as well as different combinations of input features on predictions of wave condition are examined.

<p>Wave-following buoys are used to provide measurements of free surface elevation across the oceans. The measurements they produce are widely used to derive wave-averaged parameters such as significant wave height and peak period, alongside wave-by-wave statistics such as crest height distributions. Particularly concerning the measurement of extreme wave crests, these measurements are often perceived to be less accurate. We directly assess this through a side-by-side laboratory comparison of measurements made using Eulerian wave gauges and model wave-following buoys for directionally spread waves representative of extreme conditions on deep water. Our experimental measurements are compared to exact (Herbers and Janssen 2016, J. Phys. Oceanogr, 46, 1009-1021) and new approximate expression for Lagrangian second-order theory derived herein. We derive simple closed-form expressions for the second-order contribution to crest height representative of extreme ocean waves. Our experiments confirm that the motion a wave-following buoy should not significantly affect the measurements of wave crests or spectral parameters, and that discrepancies observed for in-situ buoy data are most likely a result of filtering. This filtering occurs when accelerations that are measured by the sensors within a buoy are converted to displacements. We present an approximate means of correcting the resulting measured crest height distributions, which is shown to be effective using our experimental data.</p>

Nowadays technical and scientific communities are increasingly interested in the development of technologies for floating devices which can serve different purposes both in coastal and offshore environment. Thus, strong effort is required in the development of correct and efficient algorithms for studying the behavior of such structures under the action of sea wave loadings. At this purpose, in the past few years several approaches were investigated, both in frequency and in time domains, using linear and non-linear structural models and linear and non-linear wave theories. In this note, the effects of nonlinearities in the wave model on the dynamics of a non-linear floating rigid body model are calculated using the second-order Quasi-Determinism (QD) theory (see [1], [2]; [3]) under the action of extremely high waves. Structural nonlinearities consist essentially in non linear damping and nonlinear stiffness due to mooring lines, following the model shown in Nava & Arena, [4]. Numerical nonlinear simulations were performed by means of an algorithm based on the approach showed in Zheng et al. [5], and the results compared to those provided by the nonlinear QD theory. The purpose of this note is to show not only the effects of nonlinearities in the behavior of a floating body and to compare them with those obtained from a linear approach, but also to estimate them through non linear QD theory under the occurrence of a large wave in order to evaluate the reliability of the proposed approach.
