The briarane diterpenoids are a large family of marine natural products that have been primarily isolated from gorgonian octocorals around the world. Structurally, the family is characterized by a trans -fused bicyclo[8.4.0]tetradecane ring system containing a central, stereogenic, all-carbon quaternary carbon (C1) flanked by three additional stereocentres (C2, C10, C14). Many family members have demonstrated biological activity in numerous areas, including: cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, immunomodulatory and insect control. Despite their interesting structural properties and bioactivity, the briaranes have been largely overlooked by the synthetic community. However, in recent years, several research groups have reported progress toward developing a synthetic route to these natural products. Most of these efforts have focused on the stereoselective construction of the central C1–C2–C10–C14 stereotetrad. This review will discuss the various synthetic efforts aimed at the briarane diterpenoids along with the challenges that remain.

Mangrove plants are specialised plants that grow in the tidal coasts of tropic and subtropic regions of the world. Their unique ecology and traditional medicinal uses of mangrove plants have attracted the attention of researchers over the years, and as a result, reports on biological activity of mangrove plants have increased significantly in recent years. This review has been set out to compile and appraise the results on antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity of mangrove plants. While the Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, and PubMed were the starting points to gather information, other pieces of relevant published literature were also adequately explored for this purpose. A total of 29 reports on 17 plant species have been found to report such activities. While 19 reports were on the biological activity of the crude extracts, 10 reports identified the active compound(s) of various chemical classes of natural products including terpenes, steroids, and flavonoids. This review finds that antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity appears to be widespread in mangrove plants.

Leishmaniasis is an infectious parasitic disease that is caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, a member of the Trypanosomatidae family. Leishmaniasis is classified by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease that is responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. Although there are many possible treatments for leishmaniasis, these treatments remain mostly ineffective, expensive, and long treatment, as well as causing side effects and leading to the development of resistance. For novel and effective treatments to combat leishmaniasis, many research groups have sought to utilize natural products. In addition to exhibiting potential as therapeutic compounds, natural products may also contribute to the development of new drugs based on their chemical structures. This review presents the most promising natural products, including crude extracts and isolated compounds, employed against Leishmania spp.

AbstractAlkaloids are a large family of natural products that mostly contain basic nitrogen atoms. Because of their intriguing structures and important functions, they have long been popular targets for synthetic organic chemists. China's chemists have made significant progress in the area of alkaloid synthesis over past decades. In this article, selected total syntheses of alkaloids from research groups in mainland China during the period 2011–16 are highlighted.

Natural products endowed of biological activity represent a primary source of commodities ranging from nutrition to therapeutic agents, as well as cosmetic tools, and recreational principles. These natural means have been used by mankind since centuries if not millennia. They are commonly used all over the world and socio-economical contexts but are particularly attractive in disadvantaged area or economically emerging situations all over the world. This is very likely due to the relatively easy recovery of these bioactive principles from the environment, to the low if any cost as well as ease of administration and to the general popular compliance concerning their consumption/ingestion. In this concise review, we focus on some popular bioactive principles of botanical origin which find a wide use in the Madagascan populations. But, due to space limitations only some most common and largely diffused principles in this country are considered. Finally, a possible nanotechnological administration is discussed in the case where a potential therapeutic usage is envisaged.

Abstract Indole diterpenoids constitute a large family of natural products that are characterized by a hybrid molecular architecture consisting of an indole nucleus and diterpenoid moiety. Their pharmacologically and agriculturally important biological properties as well as intriguing molecular architectures have attracted much attention from many synthetic organic chemists. In 2012, we succeeded in the concise total synthesis of a paspalane-type indole diterpenoid, namely paspalinine, by developing a highly efficient indole ring formation protocol. After the report of this total synthesis, 4 research groups achieved the total syntheses of other paspalane- and nodulisporane-type indole diterpenoids using current state-of-the-art methods. This review summarizes the total syntheses of the paspalane- and nodulisporane-type indole diterpenoids that were described in the last 10 years.

: Due to their versatile biological activity, Azoles are widely studied in pharmacochemistry. It is possible to use them in many applications and in studies aimed at discovering antiparasitic, antineoplastic, antiviral, antimicrobial compounds; and in the production of materials for treatment of varied pathologies. Based on their biological activity, our review presents several studies that involve this class of organic compounds. A bibliographic survey of this type can effectively contribute to pharmaceutical sciences, stimulating the discovery of new compounds, and structural improvements to biological profiles of interest. In this review, articles are discussed involving the synthesis of new compounds and chemoinformatic contributions. Current applications of azoles in both the pharmaceutical and agri-business sectors are well known, yet as this research highlights, azole compounds can also bring important contributions to the fight against many diseases. Among the heterocyclics, azoles are increasingly studied by research groups around the world for application against tuberculosis, HIV, fungal and bacterial infections; and against parasites such as leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. Our hope is that this work will help arouse the interest of research groups planning to develop new bioactives to fight against these and other diseases.

The research focuses on the fragment «socio-ethical assessment of person» of the early East Slavic world view. The conceptual domain of the fragment has been illuminated in the substantive-adjectival discours. It is the first time that the hierarchy of lexicalsemantic variants in the structure of the meaning of the terms племя and родъ (descendant → family → tribe → genus, clan → social strata → people) coincides with the hierarchy of individualized and generalized socio-ethical portraits (an individualized portrait of a person → a portrait of a clan, a genus; a generalized portrait of a tribe → a portrait of a social strata → a portrait of a people) within the Kyiv Rus’ period world view. Lexems племя and родъ can be traced back to the roots with the original meaning «which multiplied, increased, grew from one root, from one ancestor» and due to this, are interchangeable in ancient Slavic writing (this is shown in the study of P. O. Lavrovskyi). The microfragment «portrait of the social strata» consists of ethical portraits of princes, princesses, clergy, etc. It was revealed that the semantics of the terms кънuзь and кънuгыни correlates with the semantics of the terms племя and родъ. In the content of all these terms there is a combination of the semantics of birth, family relationships, tribal relations with the semantics of knowledge. In our opinion, the reason for the coincidence of portraitsclergy with portraits of princes is the development of the Indo-European root reflexes (to which the term кънuзь goes back) in the direction of semantics saint, sacred. It was proved that the hierarchy of the world view microfragments repeats social-tribal relations, social and family relationships in Kyiv Rus’. Microfragment «portrait of a clan» is represented by namings Ольговичи, Володимиричи, Ростиславичи, Мстиславичи, etc. In a certain context, the term племя could denote a large family, separate branches of the genus, people, tribe. The conceptualization of an individualized image of a person was determined by its place in the family-class hierarchy. Comparison of socio-ethical portraits of persons of the princely family (grand dukes Boris, Gleb, Andryi Bogolubskyi, Alexander Nevskyi, Izyaslav Mstislavovich, etc.) revealed that the functional-semantic peculiarities of nouns and adjectives with the meanings of an ethical assessment of a person reflect subordination between family members. The article is based on the analysis of Old East Slavic literary monuments of the XI–XIII centuries.
