We devise a numerical method for passive advection of a surface, such as the interface between two incompressible fluids, across a computational mesh. The method is called isoAdvector, and is developed for general meshes consisting of arbitrary polyhedral cells. The algorithm is based on the volume of fluid (VOF) idea of calculating the volume of one of the fluids transported across the mesh faces during a time step. The novelty of the isoAdvector concept consists of two parts. First, we exploit an isosurface concept for modelling the interface inside cells in a geometric surface reconstruction step. Second, from the reconstructed surface, we model the motion of the face–interface intersection line for a general polygonal face to obtain the time evolution within a time step of the submerged face area. Integrating this submerged area over the time step leads to an accurate estimate for the total volume of fluid transported across the face. The method was tested on simple two-dimensional and three-dimensional interface advection problems on both structured and unstructured meshes. The results are very satisfactory in terms of volume conservation, boundedness, surface sharpness and efficiency. The isoAdvector method was implemented as an OpenFOAM ® extension and is published as open source.

We consider the problem of fully nonlinear three-dimensional wave interactions with floating bodies with or without a forward speed. A highly efficient time-domain computational method is developed in the context of potential flow formulation using the pre-corrected Fast Fourier Transform (PFFT) algorithm based on a high-order boundary element method. The method reduces the computational effort in solving the boundary-value problem at each time step to O(NlnN) from O(N2∼3) of the classical boundary element methods, where N is the total number of unknowns. The high efficiency of this method allows accurate computations of fully-nonlinear hydrodynamic loads, wave runups, and motions of surface vessels and marine structures in rough seas. We apply this method to study the hydrodynamics of floating objects with a focus on the understanding of fully nonlinear effects in the presence of extreme waves and large-amplitude body motions.

An experimental and computational study is performed of the wake flow behind a single yawed cylinder and a pair of parallel yawed cylinders placed in tandem. The experiments are performed for a yawed cylinder and a pair of yawed cylinders towed in a tank. Laser-induced fluorescence is used for flow visualization and particle-image velocimetry is used for quantitative velocity and vorticity measurement. Computations are performed using a second-order accurate block-structured finite-volume method with periodic boundary conditions along the cylinder axis. Results are applied to assess the applicability of a quasi-two-dimensional approximation, which assumes that the flow field is the same for any slice of the flow over the cylinder cross section. For a single cylinder, it is found that the cylinder wake vortices approach a quasi-two-dimensional state away from the cylinder upstream end for all cases examined (in which the cylinder yaw angle covers the range 0⩽ϕ⩽60°). Within the upstream region, the vortex orientation is found to be influenced by the tank side-wall boundary condition relative to the cylinder. For the case of two parallel yawed cylinders, vortices shed from the upstream cylinder are found to remain nearly quasi-two-dimensional as they are advected back and reach within about a cylinder diameter from the face of the downstream cylinder. As the vortices advect closer to the cylinder, the vortex cores become highly deformed and wrap around the downstream cylinder face. Three-dimensional perturbations of the upstream vortices are amplified as the vortices impact upon the downstream cylinder, such that during the final stages of vortex impact the quasi-two-dimensional nature of the flow breaks down and the vorticity field for the impacting vortices acquire significant three-dimensional perturbations. Quasi-two-dimensional and fully three-dimensional computational results are compared to assess the accuracy of the quasi-two-dimensional approximation in prediction of drag and lift coefficients of the cylinders.

Compared with continuous elements, discontinuous elements advance in processing the discontinuity of physical variables at corner points and discretized models with complex boundaries. However, the computational accuracy of discontinuous elements is sensitive to the positions of element nodes. To reduce the side effect of the node position on the results, this paper proposes employing partially discontinuous elements to compute the time-domain boundary integral equation of 3D elastodynamics. Using the partially discontinuous element, the nodes located at the corner points will be shrunk into the element, whereas the nodes at the non-corner points remain unchanged. As such, a discrete model that is continuous on surfaces and discontinuous between adjacent surfaces can be generated. First, we present a numerical integration scheme of the partially discontinuous element. For the singular integral, an improved element subdivision method is proposed to reduce the side effect of the time step on the integral accuracy. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by two numerical examples. Meanwhile, we study the influence of the positions of the nodes on the stability and accuracy of the computation results by cases. Finally, the recommended value range of the inward shrink ratio of the element nodes is provided.

AbstractThe present research exposes the investigation on three-dimensional modeling of the single and twin metro tunnels for the case of the Tehran metro line. At first, simulation implemented on the comparison of the ground movements in the single and twin tunnels. Then the simulation has been performed on the influence of effective parameters of EPB-TBM on the surface settlements throughout excavation. The overcutting, shield conicity, grouting, and the final lining system modeled and the influence of face supporting pressure, grout injection pressure, as well as the clear distance of the tunnels, has been analyzed. The initial results showed a valid ground settlement behavior. The maximum settlements occurred at the end of the shield tail and it was higher in the single tunnel. The face supporting pressure had more effect on the surface settlement in comparison to the grout injection pressure. By increasing the face pressure in the single tunnel, the place of maximum settlement moved back while the grout pressure is insignificant for decreasing the settlements. Furthermore, the influence of the clear distance in the twin tunnels led to zero after the length of 30 m. Accordingly, for more distances, the tunnels must be examined independently and as two different single tunnels.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient method to address the problem of color face image segmentation that is based on color information and saliency map. This method consists of three stages. At first, skin colored regions is detected using a Bayesian model of the human skin color. Then, we get a chroma chart that shows likelihoods of skin colors. This chroma chart is further segmented into skin region that satisfy the homogeneity property of the human skin. The third stage, visual attention model are employed to localize the face region according to the saliency map while the bottom-up approach utilizes both the intensity and color features maps from the test image. Experimental evaluation on test shows that the proposed method is capable of segmenting the face area quite effectively,at the same time, our methods shows good performance for subjects in both simple and complex backgrounds, as well as varying illumination conditions and skin color variances.

From the 921 earthquake to the major typhoons, including the Morakot typhoon, they damaged original landscape of rivers in Taiwan. In recent years, it alleged that abutment bridge exposed to the most serious security problems. Because of bridge piers in addition to the face of long-term river erosion, the flood on the pier will produce localized erosion near the bridge. The pier will be due to inadequate bearing capacity, resulting in subsidence, displacement, bridge version accompanied by tilting and even caving. The river erosion of soil around the piers deposits and production of contraction will often reduce the bearing capacity. Therefore, how to accurately estimate the scour depth, calculate piers to withstand water impact and analyses its stability for preventing injuries in the first place is the current pressing issues. In this study, three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) analysis program Plaxis 3D foundation is used. Polaris second bridge is selected for analysis. Based on local scouring of the model and various numerical variable conditions, the parameter of bridge pier is studied.

Few data exist concerning the right ventricular (RV) physiological adaptation in American-style football (ASF) athletes. We aimed to analyze the RV global and regional responses among ASF-trained athletes. Fifty-nine (20 linemen and 39 non-linemen) ASF athletes were studied before and after inter-seasonal training. During this period, which lasted 7 months, all athletes were exposed to combined dynamic and static exercises. Cardiac longitudinal changes were examined using three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography. A computational method based on geodesic distances was applied to volumetrically parcellate the RV into apical, outlet, and inlet regions. RV global and regional end-diastolic volumes increased significantly and similarly in linemen and non-linemen after training, with predominant changes in the apex and outlet regions. RV global and regional ejection fractions were preserved. Morphological changes were uniformly distributed among the four cardiac chambers, and it was independent of the field position. Assessment of RV end-diastolic global, inlet and apical volumes showed low intra-observer (3.3%, 4.1%, and 5.3%, respectively) and inter-observer (7%, 12.2%, and 9%, respectively) variability, whereas the outlet regional volumetric assessment was less reproducible. To conclude, ASF inter-seasonal training was associated with a proportionate biventricular enlargement, regardless of the field position. Regional RV analysis allowed us to quantify the amount of exercise-induced remodeling that was larger in the apical and outlet regions.

This work discusses procedures used to determine effective shear area of ship sections. Five types of ships have been studied. Initially, the vertical natural frequencies of an acrylic scale model 3m in length in a laboratory at university are obtained from experimental tests and from a three dimensional numerical model, and are compared to those calculated from a one dimensional model which the effective shear area was calculated by a practical computational method based on thin-walled section Shear Flow Theory. The second studied ship was a ship employed in midshipmen training. Two models were made to complement some studies and vibration measurements made for those ships in the end of 1980 decade when some vibration problems in them were solved as a result of that effort. Comparisons were made between natural frequencies obtained experimentally, numerically from a three dimensional finite element model and from a one dimensional model in which effective shear area is considered. The third and fourth were, respectively, a tanker ship and an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) boat, both with comparison between three and one dimensional models results out of water. Experimental tests had been performed in these two ships and their results were used in other comparison made after the inclusion of another important effect that acts simultaneously: the added mass. Finally, natural frequencies experimental and numerical results of a barge are presented. The natural frequencies numerical results of vertical hull vibration obtained from these approximations of effective shear areas for the five ships are finally discussed.

In this work, two time integration algorithms for the anisotropic damage model proposed by Lemaitre et al. (2000) are compared. Specifically, the standard implicit Euler scheme is compared to an algorithm which implicitly solves the elasto-plastic evolution equations and explicitly computes the damage update. To this end, a three dimensional bending example is solved using the finite element method and the results of the two algorithms are compared for different time step sizes.
